Re: Places & text about places

I don’t know if this will work for you but you can try.

In the Places workspace go to the place you are interested in and select it. Check the icon to add description text and add the any text you desire. This text will appear in every reference to this place. If you already have text in the description field this text will be added to the description field.

The ideal solution would be the ability to attach images to a place. You could add text or picture images to the place without having a long disruption field.

Maybe you should suggest this to FTM as an improvement.

This is kind of clunky, but I have added a Custom Note to my FTM file called "Geo-Note".

I will put interesting info I want to keep in either the description field, or if longer, the Fact Note area. I usually use this to describe boundary changes and dates, but occasionally historical tidbits. This GeoNote fact for a particular place can be copied and pasted to other people it may effect. If need be, I can attach media to the fact itself, or most commonly to a source citation attached to this fact. I will usually mark this note as "private", as it is usually just a note for me and I usually don't want it in a Genealogy (register) report.

Or you could have a Word document that is relevant to each place, link it to the place wherever you need to, and only have to change it in one place. Marking the media private would stop it being seen.

I had a problem like that in FTM 2014 and when I called, they were able to point me to instructions to reset something and it has worked fine after that. I'm not posting the fix they gave me as they it is for 2014 only. I suggest you call customer support.

I'm using Windows 7 and FTM2014, but this also works in XP and should in other versions. There is a Family Tree Maker folder in your My Documents folder. That's the folder that contains your tree, media, and all related data. You can copy that folder to another computer. If that computer has FTM, then that user can then view everything that is in your tree, including all media (but not change the Ancestry tree without your user name and password.

Depending on the size of your tree, it will likely not fit on a CD. My tree has about 5,000 people and a lot of media files, and is about 9GB. That's bigger than a DVD and would require a flash drive.

You can also back up your tree and data the same way.

Creating a History Report in Family Tree Maker

Can't find a way to print a report showing all changes made to records. Because FTM saves the last 200 changes made, I can find no way to print a report showing the changes made so that I can update & print only those pages in the book. I had to hover my mouse over each entry in the history and find the ones that were added after a certain date. Is there a way to create a history report in FTM 2014 that you can sort by date? I saw one response that said you choose People > Tree > . There is not a Tree option under People in FTM 2014. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Error Message in FTM When Exporting to Gedcom

When trying to export a family tree file in Gedcom format I get the following error message: "The export process failed because an error occurred." This happens no matter what character set I choose. I chose Other as the destination.

The tree I am trying to export has been synced, compacted and has no errors. I am using Windows 10 and FTM 2014.

Thanks for the reply. At least I didn't miss it somewhere in the software. Sure wish they had one. Would save me a bunch of time.

Since your tree has been sync-ed, have you tried creating the GEDCOM from your ancestry tree?

These attachments will not print in reports unless they are imported in the text document item (Smart Stories) of the FTM book and then create a book with the text item and your desired report. These stand alone text items can be saved and attached to the appropriate people, and then added to the FTM book. The text item in the book will NOT be updated if you update the original standalone file.

I use the Text items in FTM books to include reviews of research for a difficult dead end that I have resolved, for leads for those dead ends that are not resolved, and interesting stories about the family.

It you just want to attach the document and then share with other people you may wish to use a more universal format like a PDF document. Nearly every computer has a PDF reader, a significantly smaller percentage have a word processor that opens files in the DOC format. Even less have one the opens the recent DOCX format.

Delores,
If you sync with Ancestry, then each sync will make a report and it will shown the changes made since the last sync.

I know it is NOT what you want, but it does help at times.

Need to reinstall FTM 2014 & Windows 10

I purchased FTM 2014 in September 2014 and have my email receipt (with order and license number) and the link to download it. My hard drive crashed and I bought a new computer. I am trying to reinstall FTM and when I click on the link to download the files I get a message saying it has expired.

So that is my first question: How do I access the files to reinstall the software?

My second question is about Windows 10 which is the OS on my new computer. Is FTM 2014 compatible with Windows 10?

FTM Upgrade (2014) and Windows 10 PC

Recently submitted a post relating to issues between FTM 2012 and Windows 10 machine. Received some really helpful suggestions and guidance, and have now purchased an FTM Upgrade (2014) which I have just installed on my PC. (Ancestry couldn't provide this CD, so I purchased from S&N by the way.)

BUT, am now having major issues and have had to download my trees from gedcom files back into FTM as new Trees today, although this wasn't the case when I first installed the upgrade. The original files were there, but have now completely disappeared.

So existing trees that were linked between FTM and Ancestry.co.uk in FTM are no longer linked.
Interestingly also photos/media are no longer available - though titles are shown - and search manually is required ('Unknown - click to search manually').

Whilst the trees were still available one tree disappeared and then reappeared. So in that instance links with my family by invitation to view, etc are now in total chaos. And I now have two trees showing the same information in Ancestry, but one has no media at all! But when I opened up FTM today all trees in there have disappeared but I have now used gedcom files to reinstate them as new Trees!

Thank goodness I saved the gedcom files on Ancestry.co.uk but of course the back- up files I did in FTM 2012 are no longer relevant for FTM upgrade I have to assume.

I will of course be in touch with Ancestry about all this, but if anybody has had similar issues and/or knows a way around all this chaos that would be just fantastic, as at the moment I am in total limbo between the two pieces of genealogy software.

So all in all am in total confusion - as do I reconnect the trees again even though they are showing as connected online on Ancestry? And anyhow, are they all going to disappear again and cause even more confusion!?!

Very many thanks in advance for any assistance.

script error message in FTM 2012

I recently (accidentally) removed one of my Ancestry synced trees from my FTM software. The tree is still on Ancestry, so I didn't lose anything. I am trying to restore the tree back into FTM, but I keep getting a script error message that won't let me do anything. This is the script error:

http://tags.tiqcdn.com/utag/ancestry/main/prod/utag.652.js?u...

Does anyone know how to get rid of this, so I can export my online tree back into FTM? Thank you greatly in advance!! Cindy cindypete6@yahoo.com

The "upgrade" isn't really an upgrade, you are simply installing a different program.

Unless you uninstalled FTM2012 it will still be there and usable. Unless you deleted the FTM2012 data files (*.ftm, *.ftmb extensions) they will still be there.

If you can, create a new folder in your Documents folder called something like "Family Tree Maker 2014" (the actual name doesn't matter). Then using FTM2012 do a full Backup (not export) including "Media files", "Historical Events", "Web Favourites" and tick "allowed file to resume syncing" if possible. Save this backup to your new folder.

Using FTM2014 Restore the new Backup (*.ftmb) file. That should create a new, FTM2014 compatible tree and media folder. It might even allow resyncing but as I don't use "sync to Ancestry" I wouldn't know!
Hope this helps

I am confused with exactly what you did to cause your problems, but I can offer one small piece of info that might help.

When you export a Gedcom from ftm (and I suppose from ancestry, as well), what is included in the gedcom in regards to images is the exact file path and name that is in that ftm file. I have run into this "file not found" when I have experimented with importing and exporting gedcom files and was able to cure the problem when I examined the various file names and paths and see where I got the "current" media file names and path out of sync with the "new" file name and path.

That said, I don't understand why you are dealing with gedcoms when you are apparently trying to upload or download trees from/to ancestry trees from/to ftm files. You can upload an ftm file directly to an ancestry tree (see the upper right "share" button in any screen of FTM. You can download an ancestry tree directly into FTM in the "Plan" Workspace > New Tree tab, showing the ancestry tree you want to directly load to an FTM file.

Very many thanks alanmon.

I am sure you so kindly advised me earlier as to this issue - which enabled me to try the upgrade, but I can't find the original thread now - even though I marked it as a 'favourite'!

In fact, am being a total idiot in all this - as a reasonably savvy software user, I am just a bit confused to say the least at the moment when it comes to FTM and its link with Ancestry. So no wonder I am confusing you helpful folk.

I will study your so helpful advice and see what I can do.

Thank you so much for you help, really appreciated.

Thank you so much Silverfox3280.

I do so value the kind help you and others are giving to me on this quite simple but to me it's very complex issue. As I mentioned to others, I am a reasonably experienced and savvy software user - but am finding this business between Ancestry and the FTM upgrade completely baffling. Probably because I am so fearful of messing up and losing the invaluable data I have worked so hard to produce - albeit as an amateur for purely personal and family use! And where feasible to share with others of course. ☺

However, will look into your wise words and see where I get to.

Thank you so much for taking the time out to assist, really appreciated.

Carol

Will we see a newer version of FTM any time soon, or are they done making this software? I only ask because FTM seems a little antiquated now compared to it's competitors.
