Re: FTM 2014 and "Married too" When Never Married?!

There are two issues at play here. When I changed the marriage relationship from Spouse to Met reports accurately reflected the change. According to your original message your reports still said Married, no

I did some more research on the Fact Properties Fact Sentence you get by right clicking on the marriage fact. There is a different Fact Sentence for each type of relationship, Spouse, Friends, Other, etc. Changing the sentence will change it for all relationships with that type of relationship but not for relationships with different relationships.

When I changed the Fact Sentence for spouse relationships it changed it for all spouse relationships.

Does anyone use this that might live in the Edinburgh area.
It would be great if I could chat with someone as I am about to move from a PC to a Mac and am not only trying to get used to the Mac but also FTM 3

Thanks

Based on what you have found if you change the fact sentence to "met" for one of the other marriage types; ie friend, partner, and then use that fact type consistently in all similar situations in your database, would the problem be solved?

Keith

There is a unique fact sentence for each of the status options. I see no need to change the sentence if things are working properly. If you do change the sentence it is changed for every relationship with that status.

In playing with this problem I have encountered what appears to be a problem with FTM. When I changed a relationship from Partners to Other the relationship did change from Partners to Other. When I went back to the Fact view it still said they were Partners and Reports said they were Partners. Apparently FTM is not propagating the change in status back to everyplace it is needed.

I called FTM support. They suggested I needed to repair my file and sent me an email on how to do this. I am not optimistic.

While I do not have any problems with marriages, it would be nice to do something similar with non biological children living with other parents. I just checked and do not see a sentence format for children of other types of relationships; (adopted, family, etc.)

I have several situation where this would be nice. I get frustrated when I know the children are non biological but it shows the children as biological and includes them in the main line genealogical tree.

Would a simple compact on the file propagate the changes?

Hi Keith.

In the Descendant Genealogy Report (the register style report), if you look at the right panel is checkbox "Include parent/child relationship types". Checking that box will make the report show the relationship for that child.

HOWEVER, it will not show it for further generations. So, if you have followed that child's descendants for six generations later, none of the later six generations will show they are not related by blood to the top-of-line person. All of the descendants will appear in the report as if they are descendants of the top-of-line ancestor, where they are not.

This is why I simply do not ATTACH persons to non-blood parents (step, foster, adopted, whatever). If they are not attached they will not show as a descendant of some category of ancestor who is not a blood ancestor.

Is anyone else having this issue?

I didn't work on my FTM for a couple weeks, and when I came back to it, it seems like there is some things missing! All the names and info previously entered is still there, but all the green "leafs" linking to Ancestry are gone.

I made sure that it was currently "synced" and my Ancestry account is all paid currently.

Help!

Is FTM logged into your Ancestery.com account?

FTM 2014 - Is it in sync or not in sync

When I click on "Sync Now" on the left hand side of my screen, everything looks like it is doing what it is supposed to do. However, when all is done, I still see "Sync needed". In the upper right hand corner of my screen is a little box with a check mark in it. If I hover over it, is tells me my trees are in sync. The question is, which is it?
I unlinked my trees and downloaded my ancestry tree. I was hoping that would help. It didn't.
This is a fairly recent problem. It seems that the tree is in sync, but it is hard to have confidence when I am getting conflicting information.

There's a bug in FTM 2014 in that the status of sync on the Plan page is wrong. Go by the sync icon in the top right-hand corner. That's always correct.

I'm trying to download my ancestry.co.uk tree to the family tree maker software - but trying to log in from the FTM program, it keeps trying to log me into to ancestry.com, and so does not recognise my login details. what can i do?

You should contact support.
There is however as I understand it only one site, but it has a number of doors and your log in should work which ever door you use. I know I can log into .com for instance through a browser.
One thought that occurs is that you have an American version of the program which points to .com, whereas a UK version points to .co.uk. As I said I believe all roads lead to Utah where your tree is stored.

Does anyone have this person in your family tree? She was born May 26, 1908 in Heinrichsdorf/Plosnica, Poland to an Augusta Demski or Dembska. Augusta was single at the time, living with her parents, and was listed as a "servant". Any information would be very helpful as I believe this may be my mother.

As tony says there is only one computer centre, accessed via different addresses. If you go to the ancestry.com site in an external browser you can login (I can't remember whether you need to register as well) using your existing UK identity and password and you will see the correct UK page appear. Back in FTM you should get a prompt to register or sign-in when you try a web search (again I can't remember the precise words but when I installed FTM2014 on my new laptop recently I got a prompt to sign in and then FTM remembered). After that it doesn't matter via which site you log-in.

I've done this with the UK, USA and AU sites (the latter for test purposes) in the past.

You can also change the default login site to the UK which I've also done :

Hope this helps

Hi!

I did this earlier this year - and the process is really, really painless with FTM3 for Mac you will be please to hear. I was using FTM 2013 (I think) on the PC, and FTM3 uses exactly the same file structure and interface, pretty much. I've heard of all sorts of issues going to FTM2 for Mac, so don't do that, as it is very different. But FTM3 was a breeze.

Places & text about places

One of my least favourite parts of FTM is the way that places are handled, although I am starting to find some workarounds. However, this question concerns context.

When you get a place from a census record, or birth certificate, you never get any context or colour. What was the place actually *like* then. So I have now found a very useful source (http://www.victorianlondon.org/index-2012.htm if you are interested) which contains a number of documents that do precisely that for London. The descriptions of Bethnal Green from "Sanitary Ramblings" are what I am most looking at right now - they directly describe streets my ancestors lived at the time they lived there.

But how do I go about capturing this? I don't want to upload the whole book. I could add it as a source, and then add various snippets - but what do I then attach it to? Really, I would like to attach it to the place - but you can't do that. So do I have to attach it to individual events, such as every residence event (there are a lot of them!)? Seems inefficient. Is there a better way?

Any ideas? Thanks.

I'm having the same problem with my biggest tree (almost 12,000 individuals!). Opening the tree does nothing and attempting to restore last week's backup results in the error, so I am discouraged by the fact that neither of you have had a resolution to the problem. :/
