What would you like to see added to FTM that competitors offer?

I've been asking the same question. Sept 2013 when Ancestry released FTM 2014 the marketing hype was every two years instead of annually. That was 26 months ago. Since Ancestry has been pushing development of their Cloud tree software I would certainly like some idea for the future, especially as I do not use the on-line trees.

I would say the future of FTM looks bleak at this point.

Since 2000 through 2011, FTM counted on a Christmas season, every Christmas, to get them their annual revenue stream. They released the program in a CD box that went into stores in time for Christmas each season.

Since Christmas 2011 (FTM2012), there has been only one issue of the program in time for Christmas, and that the Christmas of 2013 with the issuance of FTM2014. So, Christmases out of three of the past four years, of 2012, 2014, and now 2015 have not generated any revenue for ancestry.com

When ancestry issues press releases or financial info, no mention of FTM is made.

Since there has been only one year of fresh revenues generated out of the past four years - that strongly suggests that no development has been going and that department has been stripped.

That suggestion is then contrasted with the amount of development it took to redesign the ancestry cloud platform.

The public ancestry.com company went private awhile back. It remains to be seen if the current owners simply are going to leave FTM2014 as it is permanently, or if another owner comes along, or what the future will be. A wrinkle with spinning FTM off is that ancestry would probably want the new owners to commit to keeping the ability to sync with ancestry trees.

So, what does this mean?? Need to find another program? When I got hold of tech support, the man told me that the only reason it was crashing all the time, was that I had too big a database. 13,038 people, about 2300 pics. I have invested a lot of money, time, and effort into this database, using FTM since back in the shareware days, and having to convert to some other program, and then lose the ability to sync with the online version of my database, is a little too much.
I did notice, that when I was running the Win10 compatability test, that the only program that showed as incompatible was FTM 14, but, I assumed, that the compatibility problem would be fixed prior to the release. Now you tell me that they are giving up on FTM?? Damn!

So, are you saying that I 'CAN' go back to FTM 12, from FTM2014, by simply 'syncing' from Ancestry back into FTM 12, even though I synced up to Ancestry from 2014?

Seems to me that you have stated that FTM 12 works fine on Win10? I need to do something, as 2014 on Win10 is crashing continually

The problem seems to be escalating. I have no problem 'opening' the program, or loading in my database, but, try to create a source, or sometime, just enter a new person, and it crashes. Sometimes it crashes when trying to import a picture.
The crashes have been increasing, and it is getting VERY frustrating.
From what some of you have been saying, I guess looking for a new program is what we are gonnahavtado :-((

Well, I upgraded to the .1404 as well, but, it didn't change any of my problems. I never checked to see if it would crash in Family view, as I neither like, nor use, it

Well, I would like to see a newer version that you can also link to other sites and genealogical resources. I would also like to see options to be able to edit photos and crop.
Maybe a way to link our DNA results from Ancestry and other DNA sites.
I have taken a look at other software, and for me possible alternatives are Heredis, Roots Magic, Ancestral Quest, Family Historian or Legacy. Maybe take a look at those and see what features they have that FTM could use...

This is exactly what we are seeing as well, that particular URL and inability to proceed. Worse, that error pops up so fast when either yes or no for "continue running script" is selected that it is not possible to even close Family Tree Maker without going to the Windows Task Manager to terminate the program.

We went two rounds with call in support at Ancestry last evening with the final recommendation to email support@Ancestry.com as the problem was beyond the telephone folks to resolve.

Our situation is Windows 7 (with all updates) and FTM 2010. Everything ran fine around early October, didn't use FTM again until Oct 26 when the problem occured. Noted the issue on several Windows 7 machines, so likely software issue at Ancestry. Hopefully their support team can isolate and repair the problem on their site.

Unfortunately, that is my impression too. And to think I moved to FTM just over two years ago after the demise (a few years before) from another genealogy software. Since I am definitely not interested in a Cloud based genealogy software, guess I'll review other software as a possible solution next year. In the mean time, hope Ancestry finally announces something.

Networked trees won't scroll

Prior to the latest FTM upgrade for Windows 10, I could use the right mouse-button to drag around an online tree and I could also navigate using the mini-tree icon box. Now, I get a crossed arrow cursor rather than the dragging hand and the functionality has gone. Other controls (e.g. changing the view axis) still work, so some commands are being accepted.

FTM is in Windows firewall white-list and I've checked all of the networking hints.

Has anyone else experienced this problem and, better still, resolved it ?

Yes

No, it works as expected in Chrome, but it's a nuisance to have to keep flipping.

I have had reservations about FTM's future for some time, and have been looking at other software. Problem is that I can not find anything to replace it with.

Synchronizing with Ancestry is not a consideration, as I do not plan to up load a tree until I am finished. I do like the hints for looking for clues to new lines of research. I really appreciate the new document images that have been added to Ancestry, as these original images are the only way to prove a relationship. Summary database come in a far distant and unsatisfactory second.

Since I am still cleaning out some of the garbage from the first time I merged anything into my database, 15 years ago, the ability to merge data is definitely not a consideration.

I will probably continue using FTM 2012 until the OS no longer allows it to run, but I would be open to suggestions.

I have only experienced FTM and Legacy, and a couple for the mac when I had a mac.

I like the way the stories come out in Legacy. However, I am hanging on to FTM 2012 not only for the syncing but for [some of] the charts.

Notes field from .FTW file not transferring to FTM 2014

I had a Windows XP computer with FTM on it. I'm not sure exactly what version it was, but it's newer than 2005, so possibly from 2006 or 2008? I had stopped working on the family tree for a couple years and that computer is now kaput. Now I wanted to start up again with the family tree project. Thankfully, I always had a backup copy of my .FTW file I kept on a different file server.

I have a new computer with Windows 7 so I got FTM 2014 and installed it. I copied my .FTW file to the new computer, and opened it with FTM 2014 (Import a New Tree). It analyzed it, imported it, no errors or warnings. I have over 5300 people. Everything looked great.

Until I started entering new information a few days ago, then realized that none of my "Notes" from the old .FTW file were there. I had tons of Notes from talking to family members over the years, including my grandmother before she died. Stories of her childhood, etc. I had typed all of that into the old version of the program at the time under the freeform "Notes" section.

I thought perhaps something had gone wrong with the conversion, so I started over. Same thing. I made a copy of the old .FTW file, and tried using that. Same thing. I tried compacting the file, I tried everything I could think of. No notes show up under either "Person Notes" or "Research Notes".

Panicking, I thought perhaps they weren't in the old .FTW file for some reason and hadn't been saved. I couldn't find a .FTW to GEDCOM converter/exporter, but I found an old .FTW file viewer which allowed me to at least open my old .FTW and look at the people in there. The Notes are there! Thank goodness! I go to my grandmother, for instance, and I can see my Notes of her childhood. Unfortunately, it won't export anything; it's just a viewer.

I thought perhaps the Notes were in the new version of FTM 2014 and I just wasn't looking in the right place since the new version is so different from what I'm used to from my old one. I started over again with FTM 2014, importing my old file, and had it export it as a GEDCOM. Since GEDCOM is just plain text, I looked at it with Notepad. My old Notes are nowhere to be found. I can input new Notes into FTM 2014 just fine. If I then export a GEDCOM, those new Notes will be in there when I view the GEDCOM file.

Today I talked to FTM support. They sent me some links for opening up corrupt files, uploading trees and then downloading them again, and a few other suggestions. None of that solved the issue. They told me to install FTM 2005 Starter Edition and see if that would read the old .FTW file. It wouldn't open it, saying that the file was a newer version than 2005 and I needed to upgrade my FTM software. So that was a bust.

I talked to two different "FTM experts" there today. Neither could come up with a solution. They don't know why the Notes aren't transferring to the new version, and don't have any other converter utilities. Their idea was to read it off the screen from the viewer program and type it in again into the new program! I have over 5300 people. Going through them one by one to see if there are notes and then retyping them into the new version of FTM is a serious PITA. If it comes to that, I'll just have FTM 2014 spit out a GEDCOM of what it reads from the old file and import that into another program like Gramps on Linux, retype the Notes in there, and be done with FTM for good!

Unfortunately, I no longer have a copy of the old FTM software handy, or I would try to install it on the new computer, or set up a VirtualBox with Windows XP on it.

Does anyone technical have any ideas on how to get the Notes info out of the old .FTW file? I'm guessing the .FTW files are some kind of SQL database file, and the Notes are just a MEMO field in that person's database record. Anyone know more about the internal file format and how I might go about opening it up and extracting the data? I know it can be done since that old simple viewer does it, I just don't know how. It's been a while since I've done any SQL but I'm sure I could pick it up again if I can get into the file.

Thanks,
-Shane

I take it you are viewing this tree from the Search Workspace within FTM?

Suggest you copy the url in that space and copy it to the url space in a blank tab in your browser. Do you get the same behavior in your browser?

Have you exited FTM and rebooted your machine?

I don't despair at that. Ancestry offers the databases from which the truth can be known in many instances. What others choose to believe is up to them and I don't worry about them.

The unfortunate thing is that FTM is the only genealogy software that is matched into the ancestry databases, ie able to merge data. That was the main reason why I, and many others, went for this software.

First I would call FTM support and see what they can do for you.

The issue is that you needed to save a copy of the downloaded files to a CD or USB drive, so it could be used later.

You need to do this with ANY downloaded install files, as some sources will require that you buy it again.

All of my notes transferred when I converted my ftw files. In the new version you have to select the option to show notes. I'm not at my computer right now but the preference for this setting is there. If you still have issues, I can convert your file.
