Re: FTM and AncestryDNA

Ancestry does not allow importing of results from other companies.

You can upload your results from AncestryDNA to GEDmatch, to compare with those who have tested at other companies.

The short answer is yes you can use data from any DNA testing service. Why? Because FTM does NOT import DNA data from AncestryDNA or any other DNA service. There is no automatic feature.

The DNA data comes from you manually adding certain information to your FTM file in a certain way. You get this information if you have tested your or another family member's DNA at one of the DNA testing companies. THEN IF you have the latest version of Charting Companion using the specialized chart based on the McGuire Method chart (see Blaine Bettinger's blog) which combines a descendant chart with the shared centiMorgan information you manually added to FTM you can see this information listed below a descendant chart.

You can read thru the various support articles at MacKiev and Progeny to learn more about the process and the chart. And even Blaine's blog to better understand the development and usefulness of the chart type before there was even a way to automatically create one.

So the email is promoting the various sales going on -- AncestryDNA, Family Tree Magazine's book written by Blaine Bettinger, Progeny Charting Companion which creates a chart version based on the McGuire Method Chart that Blaine blogged about, and a learning course by a society.

Family Tree Maker -- new buy or upgrade -- itself is not on sale at the moment. Hopefully Software MacKiev will put a sale on for Black Friday or Cyber Monday.

BE VERY CAREFUL.
It looks as if FTM does not restrict its search to the media folder for the tree you are looking at.
Image names are only unique within one media folder. The same name can be used for a different and unrelated image on another tree. FTM might find a matching name in your largest media folder. It does highlight this in the listing of files you can copy --- but it is almost certainly the wrong file. DO NOT COPY as it will corrupt your file.
Better to delete it from you tree and perhaps you next sync will download it again.
Have reported to Mackiev but not convinced they understand the problem and the amount of your work that could be ruined.
Sorry to be a killjoy

Well that sucks. Ordered the test for $59, only to log in this morning and see it’s now $49. What’s up?

Black Friday sales are almost always the best prices of the year.

Yeah it does sting when you just miss a sale or better sale. I'm thankful I didn't buy another Family Tree DNA Family Finder yesterday at $49. Today it is $39 -- the new lowest price ever. I did get a great deal on a Y-DNA upgrade the other day so I'm happy.

If you get more into DNA /Genealogy testing, you'll want to keep an eye on some genetic genealogist bloggers.

DNA eXplained
Roberta Estes writes this. Lots of good instructional posts and heads up on sales.

The Genetic Genealogist
Blaine Bettinger writes this. He has also written a few books. One is half off at Family Tree Magazine right now. If you prefer ebook, check Amazon as the same book in kindle format has been discounted deeply for the last month. From sorting books at Amazon, I can see a new edition will be coming out late next summer. So much changing real fast.

The DNA Geek
Sometimes goes a little deeper into the DNA/Genealogy science advanced level. But mentions sales and occasionally reports on wait times.

Genealogy Junkie
This blogger used to keep a running list of the varies sales by the various companies but has not done so for a few years. But the existing list will give you an idea of when to keep an eye out for a sale.

There are some others but these will get you started.

Could someone please help with deleting 'Unknown Spouse' attached to female in my tree? Next to this female's details there is a blank box and I can't get rid of it. The 1st Spouse is the one I wish to keep attached to her name and 2nd Unknown Spouse is the one I'm trying to delete. Would appreciate help. Thank you

Select "Person" from the Menu (File/Edit/View/Person/Tools/Help)
Select "Attach/Detach Person"
Select "Detach Selected Person"
Check the box next to "Unknown Spouse"

Make sure this is indeed a phantom spouse and not the case where any children do not have a father entered.

FTM Sync & Living People

It would appear that when I sync my local FTM tree with the online Ancestry tree, the online version replaces actual names in my local file with "living". True? If so, please tell me there is a way to retrieve the thousands of first names that are now MIA. Thanks!

You, the owner of tree has FULL access to ALL "Living" information.
You should not be seeing this "Living" only non owners should.

Did you select "privatize" in FTM when you established the sync? If so, even your own profile will show no name or details.

What is the Ancestry DNA postage and packing charge in the US? Here in the UK the normal price is 79 pounds plus 20 pounds (around 25 dollars) p and p - thus 99 pounds in total. The best offer price I have seen is 49 pounds (around sixty dollars) plus postage. I haven't checked the postage recently but I doubt it has come down.
I fail to see how the postage is justified - you can post a heavy parcel (a video player for example) for twenty pounds. A DNA kit should cost around a fiver at most.

I did privatize living people when I uploaded the original file. My problem is that updates to the online version that are marked "living" are downloading to my local tree as "living" and replacing the actual first name even when I did not privatize the individual originally. Ex, let's say I know Sally Jones is not living, so I upload her as Sally Jones. Someone else has data on her but they have her marked as living. If I update my online tree with the data from this "living" person, it then replaces Sally in my local file with "living" when I sync the trees.

I've always thought the P&P price was pretty steep, and not including it in the headline price, or even showing you until you "drill down", seems a bit sneaky. But I suppose you do have to take into account the fact that you're paying for the kit to be delivered to you PLUS the postage for the completed kit to be returned to the US where it's then processed. They might even claim that the P&P covered the box and sample tube as well (since that's effectively the "packing" for your DNA sample). Either way, I do think it would be more honest if they included the p&p in the headline price (tailored to the particular region where it's being advertised, of course), rather than pretending it's cheaper than it's actually going to be.

Aren't UK kits processed in the Dublin, Ireland lab, not the Utah lab?

Re: FTM and AncestryDNA

No, I think they go via Dublin but are processed in the US, according to the help pages.

["... shipping fees cover both the kit being shipped to you with tracking, and you shipping the kit back, as well as other shipping related to the provision of the DNA testing service. When the kit is shipped back, it's sent first to Dublin and then to our lab in the United States. No additional postage is necessary." https://support.ancestry.co.uk/s/article/DNA-Shipping2) Tried to post this before but it kept failing!]

That page also says there's a standard non-expedited shipping option at £10, or £5 for each additional kit, though I don't recall being offered that...

Did you Privatize within FTM before syncing?
If so the you need to turn off the Privatizing within FTM.

I sync my tree with the Private and non searching and there are no issues. I can see the living data when I am at Ancestry and the complete data is still in my FTM file.

I'm not sure I fully understand you, but I've never seen a person's NAME replaced by "Living" in either FTM or Ancestry, whether or not they're private. A private entry, typically someone who is living and in another tree to which you don't have permission to see living individuals, shows as simply "Private" with no name or dates at all, but that's only online, not in your local FTM tree (you can't download someone else's tree to FTM even if you have access to it, so there shouldn't ever be any notion of "Private" locally).

The word "Living" is a separate marker that may replace the date of death, but doesn't itself affect the name. Normally, "Living" applies to anyone without a death fact and born less than 100 years ago, but you can override that manually (although there was a temporary bug on Ancestry a year or two ago where everyone without a death fact was being set to living regardless! [edit: here's a discussion about it: https://www.ancestry.com/boards/topics.software.famtreemaker...])

If you've updated someone online from a match and that's set them to "Living", then you've synced to FTM, I'd expect their death-date field in FTM (NOT their first name) to show "Living" - that's correct and how it should work. [edit: I seem to be mistaken! - I can't see any "Living" indicator in FTM at all, even after syncing a living individual from Ancestry - see attached screenshots]

Perhaps you could post screenshots of the person, both online in Ancestry and in FTM, showing where the word "Living" is appearing? That might help us understand the problem.

[edit: added screenshots showing a private individual from another tree in Ancestry, a living individual in my Ancestry tree, and the same individual in FTM after syncing]
