Thanks for the feedback, suggestions and tips. I ended up merging the two trees, to include my paternal biological ancestors, maternal biological ancestors, and maternal adoptive ancestors into one tree. Overall, it worked very nicely. It took me a bit to get the merged tree to “prefer” her biological family over her adoptive family, but once I found the right button, it worked fine. After the merge, my color coding was a mess so I’ve turned that off and will figure that out later.

Ross, thanks for your comment regarding people merges. I only had one person in both trees but neither the automatic nor manual merge worked very well. With facts such as residence, I was forced to choose between one or the other, even where different dates were involved. I ended up merging the person manually, then rebuilding the facts, using information from the original trees.

Thank you for your response, and yes I did mean 2012. And yes I can scan to e-mail, etc. It's just that FTM doesn't recognize my scanner.
I have been to FTM website and some of the technicians have e-mailed me possible solutions, all of which involve secondary scanning, but thanks for the good info.

Lexmark, the scanner manufacturer has spent more that 2 hours trying to get the "driver" issue straightened out. Also, a local professional technician tried to resolve the issue.
I don't mind returning this unit again, and the store manager said that would be fine.....EXCEPT I don't know which one to choose.
When I say I am computer illiterate, I'm speaking the truth.

Thank you very much and I know I should learn all the fine points of scanning. I have essential tremors and it is very frustrating to try to edit photos, etc.. I'll keep on trying different things. I have Windows XP and someone suggested upgrading to Windows 7, that might do the trick..I don't know..but, again, thanks for your information

Thanks for your input...but I would prefer having the choice, I am not computer literate and have waited for the "direct scan" option, and would really like to have a scanner that is compatible.

Began using FTM last year specifically because of the ability to direct scan into an individual's record. I had a 6 year old Lexmark printer and all was well, until 3 weeks ago when I purchased a new Lexmark "all in one" (traded in the old one). When I scan I get the message "device not found"...Lexmark has spent hours in my computer remotely and advised I should contact FTM. FTM states the parameters of the printer are not compatible with the software. I asked for a list of "compatible" printers and was told there is no list. Okay, what are the Parameters, what should I look for, I was advised a list was not available.
I have tried the Lexmark Pro915, Pro715 and a Dell all in one "no device found". I called FTM again they said to upgrade to FTM 12 as significant changes had been made and that "might" solve the problem. I did, it didn't. Can anyone recommend a printer/scanner that might resolve this issue for me.

Tailgating onto this topic, as I have a related issue:

I found my sync logs where there were expected to be, in %TMP%\5779c4cf-19ac-4e30-b08a-ef4776632855_SyncMediaLog.zip, for example. However, that file is password protected. I've tried my ancestry.com password and the Windows ACL password to no avail.

Just what password is this little sucker expecting?

I searched around the entries which were sync'd at the same time the error was 1st seen and have found one issue which I corrected.

Still have the original error showing, but as you say, it may well be an Ancestry issue which will clear in time. Possibly similar to the locked hint issue they have from time to time, which clears when they do a full system database refresh.

May or may not be the situation but there is a size limit to files synched. Do you have one that is very large? I believe the limit is 15 MB. Others can correct the size if I'm wrong.

Thanks for the suggestions/link John. The same applied to me. In the end I compacted my tree again (did it before the upgrade and size was reduced by 0.01%). This time the size reduced by 9%! It seems to work ok and don't seem to have lost any data. Patience may be a virtue but fortune favours the brave ......

I'm thinking of purchasing FTM 2017 and wonder if all the photos in my Ancestry Tree would transfer over to it? Does it transfer Notes as well?

FTM will transfer photos. It will not transfer Comments, but it will transfer Notes. It does not transfer Weblinks.

For those syncing UP to an Ancestry Tree: Note file size limitations and file type limitations. (If you get a sync error double check that your file's size and type meet the requirements. While FTM can handle larger size media, Ancestry does not like to do so.) Also know that you can mark somethings private in FTM so they do not upload to the synced Ancestry Tree.

For those syncing DOWN to an FTM Tree: Realize you have to tell it to download the linked images. Otherwise if you stop your data subscription you will not have access to those linked images. If you tell it to download the source images then you will have those images in the future. See this support article

PS Only other option to sync an Ancestry Member Tree to a desktop program is RootsMagic but the two programs (FTM and RootsMagic) do the sync process differently which can make a difference in which program you go with.

all facts showing up in individual reports

When I print a timeline for an individual, all the facts show up in the lists. However, when I print an individual report for my ancestor, not all of the facts appear. For example, I have a category called 'land' and only one out of many land records appear.
I see that one of my land facts is marked 'preferred.' How do I unmark this?
