@gone,

Obviously I read her other two posts - didn't understand most of them, but I read them.

The answer is fairly simple - Ancestry didn't steal her tree or her book. If your question is not about Family Tree Maker software, don't ramble on the Family Tree Maker software board and post useless photos. The end.

Hello and thank you so much for your response which is very much appreciated. I thought that this was a way of organising my online DNA Matches through Ancestry and not just a list of charts/diagrams to print off! Having followed the links you sent I have no idea how on earth this would work, because how on earth would it know how many centimorgans anyone else would share with me! In fact how on earth would it know how many/what I have! Seems like a terrible waste of money and it just doesn't work/do anything at all on my computer. I can find the 'plugin' but that's it! It doesn't work, there is no way to access anything and although not an idiot this makes absolutely no sense to me whatsoever and nor can I see how it would work at all! Thank you so much for your help. Think it is time to contact the company.

The problem with marriage indexes has been around for a while - not just in this update.
The problem with the 1841 census is because there is no relationship information on the census. It may look like husband, wife and children but there is nothing on the census itself to confirm this. The 1841 census has always merged only as individuals.

Trouble accessing Ancestry hints - "Cannot start application"

I started using FTM last week and have not been able to access Ancestry hints from FTM. Consistently, 8 dialogue boxes pop up saying "Cannot continue. The application is improperly formatted. Contact the application vendor for assistance." Then a ninth dialogue box says "Too many deployed activations are attempting to load at once."

I can share the details info is anyone is interested and able to assist.

Thanks!

Perhaps I haven't made myself clear! It's not the lack of relationship info in marriage indexes or the 1841 census that is the problem with the update. As you say, this has long been the case.

What is happening with the update is that there are now certain situations within FTM where the information to be saved against an individual is not being updated when another person is selected. This results in the wrong info being saved against a person or persons

To use a marriage index as an example, I normally save a husband's record against the husband, then select the wife from the list of partners. Her screen comes up and I save her record against her. Then I bung both source records into the marriage fact.

Now what happens is that if I click on the wife/partner/whatever, although a new screen appears for that person, the info to be merged is stuck with the first person selected - it won't update the info to be saved, no matter who you click on in the screen.

See attachment - the Search Result detail is stuck on Ann Hollis despite her partner being in the main window. It didn't used to do this. Merge "works" but the wrong info gets saved against the person.

[edit] In the example attached, if I click on one of the suggested census returns for William Lowe on the right hand side, the Search Results Detail section stays stuck on Ann Hollis. If I copy the census link from that screen into a new search screen, the Search Results Detail is blank. If I do a brand new search to find the census return for William, the Search Results Detail screen has his info.

Here's a link (needs pasting into FTM, not clicking) to the example with blank Search Results Detail (post new update, it was fine before)

Sorry - misunderstood. I have seen this - not just since the second update but before that I think. I think it may have always happened occasionally. There are a few other things like this that don't update when they should (tool tips on citations from the media screen for one).

That's ok. Unfortunately, it seems to be happening on a much more widespread and repeatable basis. When it happened before, it usally just needed the 'double arrow' refresh to reload the merged info. Now that does not work - it doesn't even attempt to reload the data to be merged, so a refresh has no effect.

You can work around it but it is very time-consuming.

[edit] It must be something to do with the link formatting. in my last post I gave a link to a record where, if pasted into FTM, the search result detail was blank. If I find exactly the same record from a new search rather than clicking a suggested link on the marriage screen, all the right info appears in the search result detail:

Not true. When you give a book to a library/institution or anyone the author does not lose his/her right his/her book's copyright so the library/institution just can't do anything they want -- they still need permission. (Aside from items out of copyright coverage.) She very likely did not relinquish her ownership of her copyright.

But I know the FHL requires a form to be filled out with the donation so it depends on what she agreed to on that form. Part of the form is about duplication which did mean microfilming but now includes digitization. (That's why the FHL had to go back to owners of its previously microfilmed records and get permission to digitize all those microfilms -- the old contract/permission did not cover that situation.)

But the book is still under copyright and in most cases that necessitates that the digitization of the book be behind the "locked wall" requiring a visit to a FHL/FHC. This is when you see the message, "You do not have sufficient rights to view the requested object. This book can not be viewed online due to copyright restrictions."

People make mistakes. It happened to an author of a series of books a couple years ago. All volumes were less than 15 years old and while the earlier works were behind the lock wall his two latest volumes (one less than a year old) were out in the open completely view-able. Between him (and his publisher likely) he got the FHL or the contributing institution who uploaded the books to fix their mistake and now those books are behind the lock wall also.

Now back to Family Tree Maker.

DNA can be overwhelming. And unfortunately there is no magic button to press and make things happen.

You will find a shortcut icon (red) on your desktop to open Charting Companion directly.

Inside Family Tree Maker with a tree file open:
- look at the second menu bar from the top (the first is the workspaces bar)
- go to the Tools Menu
- In the Tools Menu go down to Plugins then Export with PlugIn then click on Charting Companion. (This is also where you would find the Family Book Creator Plugin if you have it.)

As far as organizing DNA (no FTM involved), look at Blaine's more recent blog posts regarding some newer Google Chrome browser extensions/plug-ins that allow you to color code your matches, or another one that allows your match note field if you enter information into that to be view-able without having to click on it. (I think both are free or accept donations.)

The McGuire Method/ DNA Matrix chart's design visually helps oneself or helps one explain to others how the matches are related. And if you talk to your matches you can hopefully learn who else among your relatives they share DNA with too.

Here's a broad outline of the process.

First you have to have tested your DNA or someone's DNA in your family. They can't make something out of nothing.

Second the testing company has to provide a way for you to download this information (DNA match name, centimorgans, number of segments) in a csv or spreadsheet table.

Ancestry does not do this itself (allow a csv donwload) though you yourself can click on a DNA match then click on the button near the confidence level and see the centimorgans and number of segments shared with that match so you could slowly gather the information and put it into a table/spreadsheet yourself manually.

But the Google Chrome browser extension/plug-in Ancestry DNA Helper does give you some tools and the ability to download a list of your DNA matches in a CSV file with the required information though you'll have to clean the file of the other information gathered. As described in the Charting Companion help and user guide, you can download your DNA data from AncestryDNA and upload it to another testing company that accepts transfers or to a third-party service which all give you the ability to download a csv file of your DNA matches with the required information needed by Charting Companion. These are mentioned in the Charting Companion help and user guide.

Third add the required event/fact field to your family tree and insert the required information so Charting Companion can match the right person in your tree to the right DNA match in your csv file.

Fourth make a descendant chart in Charting Companion with the DNA matrix option telling it where to find the csv file on your hard drive to make the chart.

That is the broad outline of what needs to take place.

What are Ancestry Hints? I have FTM 2014.1, are they available there?

Thanks

Just ignore them, the program still works. It just that the interface to Ancestry now goes through another website that protects Ancestry against DDOS and the Ancestry website now seems to cause multiple attempts to get cookies for other Ancestry sites without pausing ( I counted nearly 20 simultaneous connections from FTM2017 to various sites). I think the .NET software will not accept too many requests at one time.

(I've recently installed FTM2017 and this started in the last few days. The latest update has been installed but FTM2017 stopped working. I've System Restored and will reinstall FTM2017 to see if it works. RootsMagic didn't have any of these issues....)

Ancestry hints are only available from FTM 2017 and only if your tree is sync-ed with Ancestry.com.

Colour coding not correct after latest update

Just noticed that the colour coding in my tree is not working as it is supposed to. I am the home person and when I choose to colour code my ancestors every one comes out in just one colour. My grandparents are showing in blue, green, red and yellow, but instead of my father showing in half blue half green he is just in blue, and my mother is just in red, and I am showing in blue. Am I doing something wrong? Did this just happen in the second update, or was it also wrong after the first update? I definitely remember having some people in more than one colour in the past.

To each of you who tried to help me, my thanks.
The problem has been solved. I contacted MacKiev support who suggested I opened CHAT on support and it turned I had not implemented the 2017 update..
They sent me the update which I activated and now fully back in business.
Sorry I have been so long in getting back to you but please accept my thanks.

Are you selecting from the 4 color group?

Re: Colour coding not correct after latest update

I can confirm that in FTM2017 23.2, using the "All ancestors (4 color)" setting it shows with single colours the way you describe, and though I haven't used ancestral colour coding myself (I use a custom fact and filters instead, to colour-code relationships), this doesn't seem correct. It certainly doesn't match the colours shown in figure 4.5 on page 51 of the companion guide, which shows the home person with all four colours, and their parents each with their two appropriate parental colours. If I have a moment I'll try and reinstall 23.1 and an old tree backup to see if that also showed this problem.
