I can no longer open my tree without logging into Ancestry.com. FURTHER, Ancestry.com has found my book, Barnes Roots-Hale Heritage, and put it on their website without my permission!

Re: Ancestry.com seems to have taken my tree!
First Issue:
Is your tree online only? Public or Private? If online only then yes you have to log into your Ancestry user account used to create the online tree in order to edit/add/delete anything to your tree. If it is a public tree then you can view it without logging into your user account. If it is a private tree you need to log into your account you used to create the tree. If you are talking about images from Ancestry databases linked to your tree, make note you can only see those images if you have a paid data subscription active. (That is why it is recommended to download your found images instead of just linking them to you tree. Just don't re-upload those images to your tree as that is a waste of space.)
If your tree is in Family Tree Maker, then what version of FTM are you using and pc or mac?
Is your FTM tree synced with an Ancestry member online tree? Then in order to sync you must have Family Tree Maker 2017. Syncing was discontinued for all earlier versions partly due to Ancestry website changes and partly due to Ancestry selling FTM to another company.
Second Issue:
Are you sure it was Ancestry.com that did this and not some user/member?
I searched the catalog for your title and did not find it as or in one of the Ancestry databases. If it is attached to someone's member tree, you can contact that person/those persons and inform them that the material is copyrighted and please take the file down off of Ancestry. If they don't then you contact Ancestry corporate copyright dept. If someone has simply taken info from your book and made a tree from it there is not much that can be done. Facts are not copyrighted. But if the person has lifted text meaning your words (the way you wrote them) then you can notify them as previously described.

Family Tree Maker/Charting Companion 7 - the DNA Edition
Has anyone else downloaded this and have any idea how it works or what on earth we are supposed to do to be able to actually use it? It's all downloaded/installed etc, but I have no idea how on earth to actually use this! I know I must be a bit of an idiot, but any help/advice would be much appreciated.

New second update to FTM 2017
MacKiev have just sent out links to a new free update to 2017 (version 23.2). I have just downloaded and installed it. They claim it cures the search problems - it looks good so far. It seems to download much faster from Ancestry and I can still see category lists. Haven't tried merging anything yet but so far looks like an improvement.
↧
Re: New second update to FTM 2017
Have now tried a merge and it seems to work fine. Only problem I have found is that the "Back to results" link when you look at the details of an entry still takes you back to the main Ancestry search page rather than your own list of results. The little green back button works OK though. The whole thing seems much faster.

Re: New second update to FTM 2017
I have just dug out the details of a problem I reported back in May, where a record was found easily on the main Ancestry web site, but wasn't found from FTM. MacKiev said they could reproduce the problem but didn't yet have a solution. I am pleased to report that after this latest update FTM now finds the record, so they seem to have solved whatever that problem was.

Re: New second update to FTM 2017
Well, I've found a problem fairly quickly.
If after a search, you click on someone's tree at the top of the results then the tree opens for that person and the Search Result Detail shows all the person's info as data ready to merge. So far all normal.
However, I never want to merge the whole set - normally it's just a census or baptism record within it that I'm missing. So, I click on the View section of, say, a census record, which shows a summary view. Again, normal. It's what happens next that is the problem. There's View Image and View Record. As per usual, View Image doesn't update the Search Result Details whereas View Record does, or at least it used to
Now, if I go on to click View Record, it's not updating the results to be merged - it still has the huge list of stuff for all the person's records. Merging all that lot is the last thing I want to do!
If I start a new search and paste the census record link from the above scenario back in, the Search Result Detail stays blank. The only way I can get it to update is to search and find the record "on its own" without going into someone else's set of records first to find it. Which is a pain as often those records have been found by someone's lengthy deduction and elimination of scores of results that I then have to repeat or find a way round.
[edit] Reported to Mackiev along with examples of two links to the same record, one which adds info to be merged and the other (via someone's tree) that doesn't.

Barnes Roots, Hale Heritage
Hello!
1. I once had Trees titled Barns 1 and Barns 2 . I could use one of them off line and wanted to keep it that way. But last week sometime, I merged duplicate individuals and that may have caused the problem I now face which is NO Offline tree!
Long ago, 2005, I donated my book Barnes Roots and Hale Heritage to the Latter Day Saints Library in Salt Lake City. Is this why it appears on Ancestry.com now???
I would definitely like to make a couple of changes, the first and most important being the birthdate of William M. Barnes, No. 1 on page 15, to 1747 from 1762.
When researching, I mistook this William for another in the Tax Records of Owen County, Indiana in 1825 and adjusted the age based on wrong information for the Wm. Barnes I was researching. Earlier, I had used 1747 as his birthdate based on information from Barnes and Correlated Families by Logan Barnes published in 1938. I now believe it is the correct date, based also on newly acquired information about his father Emmanuel Barnes and his death.
I am most happy to share what I can document, but do not like to have my work in progress (not documented) posted on Ancestry.com.

Barnes Roots, Hale Heritage by Kathryn Barnes Leary
This book was published in 2005. Not perfect, but one error I would definitely like to correct is on page 15, Descendants of William M. Barnes. His age was based on a Tax Record in Owen County, Indiana for a different William Barnes! I should have kept my earlier date of 1747, based on the booklet by Logan Barnes, Barnes and Correlated Families, written in 1940. Since then, I have also verified his Father, Emmanuel, who died after William's brother Isaac was born, about 1745.

Re: Are you trying to sell your book?
Why are you posting this on the Family Tree Maker software board?
This is the third time you've mentioned "your book" - it sounds like you are trying to advertise it, which is not permitted on the Ancestry boards.

Kathryn
Regarding your second issue:
Your book in not on Ancestry.com rather it is on the FamilySearch.org website which belongs to the Family History Library of the Latter Day Saints (Mormons).
https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/1265136?availabi...
These websites are two DIFFERENT companies. I double checked on Ancestry with the alternate title and by searching the name you mentioned and in both cases you book did not appear on Ancestry.
Your book clearly has a copyright date on the title and should not have been digitized or not made freely available from home rather it should at least have been restricted to in Family History Library/Center use.
In order to get this fixed you have to contact the FamilySearch.org website (not Ancestry.com) regarding a copyright issue and your lack of permission and either have them remove the digitized book or restrict it to in FHL/FHC use meaning the person has to go into the FHL or FHC to view the book.
With your first issue regarding your trees you still need to clarify what you are using in order for someone to give advice. This board is for Family Tree Maker issues/questions. If you are only dealing with online trees and not FTM then the board for Ancestry Member Trees might be of better help.

Re: Are you trying to sell your book?
If you read her initial post Kathryn had two problems/issues the first with some trees (not sure yet if in FTM or just online) and the second regarding a book she published which she combined into one message post.
She is new to posting on message boards so she likely is not familiar with the process. I think I answered her problem regarding the book (not on Ancestry but on FamilySearch). Waiting to learn what she is using so we can help her with her tree problem if it is with FTM.

Re: Family Tree Maker/Charting Companion 7 - the DNA Edition
The DNA Matrix Descendant Chart is based on the McGuire Method of combining a descendant chart with shared DNA Match information (centiMorgens and number of segments) from which ever DNA testing company you have used.
You can learn about the McGuire Method at Blaine Bettinger/genetic genealogist blogger's website here. Reading this will give you a good idea of what this chart accomplishes in a visual format.
https://thegeneticgenealogist.com/2017/03/19/guest-post-the-...
To learn how to do the DNA Matrix version of the Descendant Chart in Charting Companion you need to read/learn the process either via the Charting Companion's Help Guide or go to Progeny Genealogy's website and downloading the free Charting Companion User Guide PDF.
http://progenygenealogy.com/Downloads
Charting Companion uses your tree information and a CSV file generated from certain DNA testing companies which include shared centiMorgan information with your DNA matches to create this DNA Matrix version of a Descendant Chart aka McGuire Method
Essentially you have to create/add a specialized event called "DNA kit" to your family tree file. In the help guide there is specialized instructions for a variety of genealogy programs on how to do this. You also have to have a CSV file that you generated from your DNA matches at one of the DNA testing sites that includes shared centiMorgan information in that CSV file. A CSV file is simply a comma separated values text file that can be read by spreadsheet, charting programs or programs that support tables.
Here's Progeny Genealogy's webpage with the information about the DNA Matrix chart and it also has a link to a youtube video about the DNA Matrix Chart.
http://progenygenealogy.com/Products/Family-Tree-Charts/DNA-...
I've manually created McGuire Method charts in a drawing program and though there are several steps to create a DNA Matrix chart in Charting Companion it works.

2nd cousin 1X removed
I have been told that a 2nd cousin 1X removed is really a 3rd cousin. Is this information I received correct?
↧
Re: 2nd cousin 1X removed
No.
https://www.genealogy.com/articles/research/16_cousn.html
Removed: When the word "removed" is used to describe a relationship, it indicates that the two people are from different generations. You and your first cousins are in the same generation (two generations younger than your grandparents), so the word "removed" is not used to describe your relationship.
The words "once removed" mean that there is a difference of one generation. For example, your mother's first cousin is your first cousin, once removed. This is because your mother's first cousin is one generation younger than your grandparents and you are two generations younger than your grandparents. This one-generation difference equals "once removed." Twice removed means that there is a two-generation difference. You are two generations younger than a first cousin of your grandmother, so you and your grandmother's first cousin are first cousins, twice removed.
