Re: Photos from one tree shown in media for a different tree

Good luck to you. I had an odd media source issue May 2016: my media and sources became scrambled and duplicated and generally corrupt. MacKiev FTM requested several computer logs, seemed to try and fix the issue. I ended up just redoing my two smaller trees, both were pretty well ruined. Still makes me sad.

In my mind the 2016 trees were synced when Ancestry was experiencing issues, now recognized by FTM as 'bad weather' and a danger to syncing.

I had a similar sort of problem recently. Some Ancestry databases have titles that are now so long that FTM cannot add the individual's name to the end to form the filename. As a result of this I accidentally overwrote some of the media files resulting in chaos in the media pane of FTM - the caption related to the file that had been overwritten but the file was actually of something different. I suggest you look at the filename in the media pane, then look at the file in the Windows folder. I suspect you will find some of your files have been overwritten.

Thanks David. I assumed it was 255 characters, which suggests it is an FTM problem since the path on my PC is around 60 characters and the database title in question was around 100 characters, which should have left plenty of characters to include a name on the end of the filename. I have contacted both Ancestry and MacKiev and suggested they sort it out between them. It would make sense for Ancestry to supply a short name for a database if they are going to insist on having ridiculously long database titles, so the filename could be formed from the short name rather than the full title.

Email addresses are not the issue here thanks.

Chris.

Thanks but I don't understand what you mean. If you can explain as if i was 10 years old, it might help me.
The pictures as in family photos have been in my "correct' tree for years, I haven't changed their titles, or names ever .
I don't make changes in FTM, I work in Ancestry and any additions , changes etc are made when i sync the tree, which probably doesn't happen as often as it should.

Hi,
I have a photo in my ftm file and cannot extract. I do not have the original so scanning again is out. What is the best way to extract the photo. I want to add it to my ancestry.com tree.and dragging from ftm to ancestry does not work.

Thank you.
Nancy

You can drag it from the Media Folder to Ancestry - not from FTM, but from the FTM Media Folder on your hard drive.

You can also go to the Media Workspace in FTM, find the photo, select it with your mouse, and right-click it for several options, including copy, print or open. If you choose open, it will open in your default program for handling the type of media file, and you can save it or copy it from there.

Hello,

I think this may help,

1. go to "My Ancestry", your tree(s) will be listed
2. click on "manage tree"
3. see Management Tools, click on "export tree"

I am new at this too! Too bad the historical records can't be saved into a program..

I'm trying to delete records I automatically downloaded from this service. Now I don't see them on the family tree format page, but they are listed in the view all page, many of them duplicates.

So under the main family tree maker files I have all these back up files. Do I need to keep the old backup files? Can I just keep the lates backup and/or auto backup ones?

Thanks,
Becky

Let me try another example; I appreciate the help!

I created a source. My source is called Birth Certificate. I assigned this source to myself and enter a bit of citation text and citation detal, and attached a photo.

My mother-I have her brith certificate, so instead of creating a new source, I used birth cetificate hoping I could edit the citation detal/text without it affecting my birth source. But it does. When I put in my mother info from the certificate it changes mine.

Where do I enter some information so the source tile is the same, but maybe details/location/ are different for another certificate.

I did not think I needed to create a new source for each certificate. Did the same when I created a source called diploma. Changed ALL other person's info, state/date, etc that was already saved in source 'dimploma" for another year/school.

Yes, I'm a newbie!

Example; I cited a source for graduation. I entered the infomation I have. Then, I went to use the source a new family member; instead of starting a new "graduation source, I entered her information. The new information on that person, transferred over to the first graduation person. In otherwords, where do I put in SPECIFIC graduation information but still use the "graduation" title so it shows specific dates/schools, etc.

Thanks, Becky

My Tree Is Not Working

I have only been a member of ancestry for a week. I have created a family tree. Most of the time when I click on a name in my family tree, nothing happens. Every now and then I get the option of opening the record and the ability to edit and so forth, but that option is rare. Mostly there is no action taken. It's like none of the links on each person work.

Is this just happening to me?

This tree that you just made, is it in Family Tree Maker or at Ancestry?

1 - FTM is very slow to start up

2 - Once it has started I go File>Go Online and I then get a "Connection Unavailable" dialogue appear containing the message, "There is no connection to the internet or a firewall is preventing Family Tree Maker from accessing the Internet".

I want to upload a tree to Ancestry so I can link my DNA results. I have done this previously with no problems, on the same device.

I assume you're using FTM2017 (if not, please read the rest of this discussion which explains that earlier versions can no longer connect to Ancestry), and that you've confirmed that you can access the internet normally using a web browser and you can use the Ancestry site.

I've just checked and I currently see this same problem, and I also experienced it yesterday for a while. I'm assuming it's an even more severe instance of the Orange or Red sync weather alerts, in which the sync system is down completely, so it should hopefully resolve itself in time. It's likely to be associated with the continuing problems at Ancestry with their server upgrades, which were meant to be completed by the end of May, but in my experience both the Ancestry site and the FTM sync seem to be worse than ever, with performance issues and errors, and frequent Orange and Red sync alerts.
Even so, it may be worth shutting down FTM and restarting your PC, as I've had this as a "glitch" in the past, and you could even try uninstalling then reinstalling FTM, but I suspect if you just wait and try again later, it will eventually recover.

Edit: I've just tried again and, as I suspected might happen, the FTM sync has recovered and is now "Green" for me. However, it's a bit disappointing that it's still showing the "Welcome back to green" fanfare that hasn't been updated since it was introduced two weeks ago :-(

Well, if that's the case, I would not consider that an improvement.

It's not a fix but there are many threads here telling you to uncheck Family Trees when you do a search and the Categories show up. It works.

This has been going on now for months. Are they asking for a class action lawsuit from customers who have, in good faith, purchased software with stated services as well as quarterly premium services from Ancestry? There are definite service quality and availability expectations from the paying consumer. They are flirting with fire.

Normally, databases do not Cache Data; however, after another freeze and required shutdown I discovered all the work I had done over last 90-minutes gone.

I am going to have to frequently exit the database and restart to protect myself in future.
