Re: FTM 2012 bug re Data Errors Report

The children were in order at Ancestry - but the "import" at FTM had altered the sort order - which of course then triggered the Data Errors.

I will put the issue aside for now as I do a fresh creation of my tree into FTM.

FTM 2012 : Media Processing Fails during initial TreeSync ?

$

I am downloading my Ancestry tree to FTM 2012.
First time download - clean start.

Left it running overnight to allow for the "Media Processing".

It has now been 6 hours since the last media item arrived. The "### Family Tree Media" folder has 2,734 items in it.

According to FTM Media, there are 3,681 media files. The difference to what has fully arrived = 947 "Media Missing" files.

If I do Ctrl/F5 - I get the message:

"Media is downloading / Media is currently being downloaded as a result of a TreeSync process. Media attached to source citations may be part of that download. Please wait until the current downloads are finished."

It has been 6 hours with no further media items downloaded.

Anyone else experienced this ?
Anyone else been able to get beyond this situation ?
Apart from the "close FTM and try again" - any suggestions ?

Cheers : Lindsay

I downloaded the exact same Ancestry tree into both FTM 2011 and FTM 2012.

FTM 2011 Data Errors Report has the usual few entries - 3 pages.

FTM 2012 Data Errors Report has 31 pages - all those extra entries due to Children Sort Order.

This isnt about excluding them from the report - I know how to do that.
This isnt about knowing how to fix them in FTM - I know how to do that.

The fact is that FTM 2012 does not handle Birth Date processing as accurately as FTM 2011 when the Birth Date has something non-standard like "Abt".

Its an FTM 2012 bug.

For those of us also trying to figure out missing census images etc, could you please explain for me your comment:

"If I delete a media file, empty the recycle bin, and then run the find missing media, check the file and search, it wont find it, but click OK and there it is. I am assuming it gets downloaded again. The filesize may be different too."

I have 947 missing media files, and there doesnt seem any pattern as to why they fail to download.

FTM creates file names for theses missing items - for example "1881 England Census_169.jpg". But they just dont arrive - and cant be downloaded using the "find missing media" function in FTM 2012.

In case you can help : thanks : Lindsay

This is now my 4th try with FTM 2012 at downloading my AMT (Ancestry Member Tree).

1) Attempt 1 - dowloaded a Gedcom ex Ancestry - imported into FTM 2012 on Manual Sync. FTM said 4,746 media items. Had 2,177 items in the (computer's) Tree Media folder.

2) Attempt 2 - Used FTM 2012 to download my AMT with Manual Sync. FTM said 3,681 media items. Had 2,734 items in the (computer's) Tree Media folder. FTM had 947 media items as "missing". No luck with trying to get them to update.

3) Attempt 3 - Used FTM 2012 to download my AMT with NO Sync at all. FTM said 1,132 media items. Had 1,132 items in the (computer's) Tree Media folder. This method mirrors FTM 2011 and its proven Gedcom reliability. The number of media items in FTM matched my AMT.

4) Attempt 4 - Used FTM 2012 to download my AMT with Auto Sync. FTM said 4,769 media items. Have 3,597 in the (computer's) Tree Media folder - but 855 of those .jpg files are 0kb - those are all things like Census media. So this attempt has 1,172 media items as "missing", and 855 media items as 0kb.

John, you lose a novice when you talk about "placeholder icon in media workspace" and "download media button". I can find no reference to such items in the Companion Guide.

I tried to use the "Find Missing Media" function, but it achieved nothing different to the status as at the aborted end of the download.

When I say 'aborted' download - in all instances when doing Media Update during installation of my AMT, the Media download bar stays green at 100%, but no further download occurs. Left one instance for 8 hours to prove the point. Once the last media item arrives - media downloading dies and things just stay like that. Have to exit FTM 2012 and come back to the mess.

So thats where I am. Sorry for the saga - but thats my experience with FTM 2012 thus far.

I cant imagine how some of the mums and dads users (non-techie) of FTM 2012 / Sync are going to fare with this feature. Its very buggy and easy to totally screw up. Pity the poor researches who manage to "sync" their data to a blank.

Anyways - any clues from the above how I should proceed ?
My tree is 5,020 people. 1,132 personal media items at AMT, and all the residual issues revolve around source citation images. BTW - the 3,597 media items I have in my current FTM 2012, took 3 hours to download / 1.52Gb. But that 1.52Gb is actually 2,680 media items - as all the rest are 0 Kb.

FTM 2011 or FTM 2012 as a stand-alone (NO SYNC) computer software package is fine.

But the bugs now in FTM 2012 might overwhelm novice users.

Perhaps FTM 2013 will have the sync feature more refined.

A novice should start as we all started - just creating a tree. The ins and outs of "sync" and "online vs desktop" - are not things a newbie needs to deal with.

I managed to bring FTM 2012 to a total halt, simply by deleting a marriage fact. The FTM error message told me to forget things and start again. So I did. But thats not what a novice needs to be put through.

To follow your suggestion, I did delete a 0Kb item to see if it would resolve.

Didnt work.

By removing the file, it retains the source but now without any media, and as such, there is nothing "missing".

So again when I do "Find Missing Media" - it finds nothing overall, nor anything for this one item that was deleted.

FTM 2012 V.21.0.0.452 - Still Has Bugs : Changes Data

$

I have FTM 2012 version 21.0.0.452.

I only want to use the TreeSync feature as a backup of my AMT (Ancestry Member Tree), so this post is only with the experience of DOWNLOADING an Ancestry tree to FTM using the TreeSync feature.

1) I have already spoken to Support about FTM mis-sorting children birth date. Not a big issue - but if you include that criteria when running the Date Errors Report - I end up with a report of 28 pages, instead of 1.

2) Of more concern is that TreeSync is able to CHANGE correct data - and make it incorrect.

When I have a person in my AMT who only has one biological parent, when that is downloaded to FTM, the later married partner of that parent, becomes another biological parent.

So children with only one parent in my AMT, end up with two parents showing in FTM.

What is worse, is that the TreeSync feature then SYNCS the now incorrect information, back to my AMT from FMT.

I then end up with a child with two parents on my AMT, when that is absolutley not the case - thanks to TreeSync.

Unacceptable !!

TreeSync is taking correct information, and turning it into incorrect information. The notion that you should be able to start with a MASTER tree and sync it, just isnt right in this example.

I dont know if these "fixes" which were part of Update .452 are to blame, but I mention them here just in case:

a) Item 1 = "Improved handling of deleted relationships"
b) Item 1 = "Implied relationships are created on AMT now"

I know that there is a bug in FTM 2012 re the above two issues, because by downloading my AMT via the external Gedcom process to FTM 2011, then these problems do not arise.

So I for one will be not using FTM 2012 at all for now. I cant afford to allow it to be corrupting my online tree (any more than has already occurred). There are messages about people seeing other corruption issues (media).

FTM 2014 : Media Processing constantly

$

Windows 8.1 : 64 bit.

I downloaded an Ancestry tree to FTM 2014 with Tree Sync 'on'. With the option to include citation media.

As far as I can tell - everything completed correctly. The tree has downloaded - my own image files are there - and over 5,000 citation media.

TreeSync is working fine. Compact file always at 0%.

Except : "Media Processing" runs constantly. It is obviously trying to complete something that will never complete. Nothing ever changes. The progress bar never has any progress in it.

One wonders if FTM people are aware (have submitted a note to support) - or other users have experienced this. It is almost as if I have a 'category' of media that keeps running up against a brick wall and is unable to complete.

I did have a wider Ancestry subscription previously which I dont have now : might it be constantly checking for those items I am no longer entitled to ?

My Ancestry tree online was in part created - years ago - from an upload from an old version of FTM - with homemade sources / citations. I can still see remnants of those in my tree - again I wonder if media processing is in a loop trying to figure those out ?

Interested to hear from anyone who has their FTM 2014 working fine in all respects - except MEDIA PROCESSING always 'on'. It hasnt caused me a problem to date though.

FTM 2012 : Windows 8.1 Script Error

I have Family Tree Maker 2012. (Upgrade to the 2014 version ? What a great idea ! Ooops - sorry - you live in Australia - you cant !).

When I now run FTM 2012 with Windows 8.1, to download an AMT tree into FTM - Tree Sync Off - the process takes so long that Windows 8.1 sees that as a problem - and continually throws up a Script Error message. Both during the download & the Gedcom import. Have to continually attend to the error message to allow process to complete.

Yes - have advised Support.

UPDATE 23 JAN 2014.

The response from Ancestry Support showed that they didnt understand the issue, or had not had to address it before.

The solution is to STOP the script when the error message comes up. In that way - the download from Ancestry to FTM 2012 will complete as before. If you allow the script to contnue - the error messages will continue - and the download / tree creation process will hang at completion.
This was with Windows 8.1 Pro 64 bit edition.
No such problem was encountered with Windows 8.

From Michelle Pfister for Ancestry at the Ancestry Blog - which is open until 14 Feb for further comments:

"Michelle PfisterFebruary 8, 2012 at 4:54 pm

It is a frustrating experience to have complications with your tree, and we are sorry to hear about the concerns of those who are commenting here. While there are several concerns mentioned, the large majority of people are successfully syncing their tree without any issues. We are able to see this success in our monitoring systems.

Having said that, I realize that this news doesn’t help if you’re the one having trouble with your tree. Troubles with the Syncing system can be related to specific tree arrangements, or hardware issues. It will help us to resolve the issues you’re seeing if you’ll give details to our Member Support. Toll-free support can be reached at 1-800-ANCESTRY (262-3787). Thank you."

I am sure all of you having "complications" with FTM 2012 will be relieved to know that you are in the minority, and that it is your data / hardware, that is causing you your 'complicated' issues with FTM 2012.

Apologies for the sarcasm here.

So much about Ancestry and its products is great : but FTM 2012 will be remembered as Ancestry's "MS VISTA" offering.

When I do a new web search on a person in Family Tree Maker, I get the usual list of matching records, but on the menu bar to the left of the matches, the "All Categories" selection is greyed out. Previously, this option let you choose among the various categories of records, such as Census & Voter Lists, Birth, Marriage & Death, etc. Now there are no categories listed.

@ TheGibsons1975 - Thanks for emphasizing how important backups are when we have countless hours of research invested in our family trees.

I do want to point out that backing up the FTM folder in Program Files will NOT allow you to reinstall FTM if your hard drive or computer fails. The installer for FTM 2012 (and other versions) copies files to other locations as well and makes changes to the Windows registry.

To reinstall FTM you need to have a backup copy of the FTM installer, either the distribution CD or the full download. To fully reinstall 2012 you will also need the latest 2012 updates. As far as I know the updates are no longer available from Ancestry or MacKiev.

The good news is that as long as you have backups of your FTM data files you could always buy the latest version of FTM from MacKiev.
