Off hand, I would say you are right about the installation process. It makes sense, and you know a lot more about this stuff than I do.

What's weird is, my wife misplaced (lost) our FTM 2012 CD years ago. I originally had FTM 2012 on a Vista OS HP computer (still do) and used the backup flashdrive to load everything on this Windows 8.1 OS HP computer. FTM works fine. How, I do not know.

Glad (and more than a bit surprised) it worked for you. Without doing some more testing I still would not recommend doing it that way unless (as in your case) it was the only option.

Just noticed the same thing on 9 Jun. Does not give us the option to choose which category to search from. Not sure if it happened when I upgraded to v23.1

There are known issues with search.

I can see it is occasionally green again. MacKiev is allowing the sync warning to operate automatically rather than holding it at orange. This means that for it to be green, no interrupts have been seen in the last two hours.

After rolling back to a (non-FTM made) backup from a month ago, I was able to get my tree to sync again while under green. The tree version that looked like it sync'ed successfully under orange never worked again.

The status is back to orange. If you read the Ancestry.com forum or Facebook, you can see the website on its own is having a lot of problems. People are getting empty searches, messages sent from their own account, page not found issues. and login issues. I've seen pictures and stories not getting save to a person when accepting a hint. Ancestry.com is a bit broken, so I wouldn't expect green to work for long.

This is nearly the same sentiment/situation I have, not to mention that for a long while I have had various ideas about interacting with FTM, if only I could get into it.

I tried contacting FTM folks when Ancestry owned them about how to program or make a plug-in for my own use, but no one could help me (or cared to).

I would like to know if anyone has any updates they could share. I have not yet tried contacting McKiev, but maybe someone else has?

I've been having this problem off and on for several months. I am beyond frustrated. I have tried patches and re-downloading from FTM from scratch and patching again this morning and it still doesn't work. I posted on their FB page so I will see if I get a reply that actually helps.
The old software worked just fine. I didn't have near the problems I've had since buying the new FTM.

One needs to clear the "Exact" checks as they have all been checked sometimes.

Took me 3 years to finally do a search about this frustration! I feel dumb too, Charles!! Worked like a charm --- thanks Stefan :)

It's also worth noting that when syncing, FTM ignores Ancestry's "resize profile image" option that lets you apply a "virtual crop" e.g. to extract an individual face from a larger family group. You always get the full image in FTM (subject to the crop option discussed here of course), so Ancestry's "resize" isn't very useful if you use both systems

To be sure of getting the same appearance, I extract the face from a photo, making sure it's exactly square, then for good measure resize it to a standard resolution. I use the free 'IrfanView' tool, which has options to scale up small images smoothly and avoid artefacts, but there are many alternatives. That way, no cropping is needed and the profile image is the same in both FTM and Ancestry.

OK everyone, here is what I have figured out.

I can generate a Kinship Report. In Individuals to Include I select Ancestors. That generates a lovely report sorted by last name.

If I then try to sort it by kinship, it says it is gathering data, and then nothing. No report shows up, no error message. I can unselect the sort by kinship and the original report gets generated again with no problem.

Any ideas?

Did you EXPORT your report to a csv/xl first and then sort, as suggested? From your comments, it sounds as if you are trying to continue to work in FTM, rather than with the spreadsheet.

FTM 2017, Not able to get info from Ancestry

When I click on the ancestry "Leaf" the family trees and other info appears. When I click on the specific info line a box pops up for me to click that I am not a robot. Next groups of pictures pop up for me to click the ones with cars, or buses or store fronts etc. Then I see a message that tells me to check for Malware. I have 2 anti malware programs. I don't have malware.

Is anyone else having this problem?

Previously I was able to see the ancestry "Leaf" in my file. The leaf has now disappeared. No family trees on Ancestry.com are available to me now. I only get the FamilySearch info now. Do you know what has happened? Help

Check your FTM 2017 settngs - if you are using FTM 2017. There are boxes to check for showing hints from Ancestry, as well as a separate box to show/not show hints from trees.

You must be using FTM 2017 and you must have synced your tree.

Yes, I was working within FTM. It sorted fine by last name, but wouldn't by kinship.

I can try to export to Excel as a workaround.
