I went on Family Tree Maker website. I did a live chat and he gave me a link for a patch. It now works like it should.

If I read between the lines correctly, I believe there is another issue here besides you transferring your FTM files to another computer. That issue is file backup.

I too run FTM 2012, and have multiple methods of backing up my FTM files. One of those methods is a 64GB flash drive with copies of the C: > Program Files(x86) > Family Tree Maker 2012 folder (645MB), and the C: > Documents > Family Tree Maker folder (8.48GB, and includes the media and family tree stuff). The F: > Family Tree Maker folder is updated approximately every month. One flash drive is at home and another off-site. If I want to put FTM 2012 on another computer, everything is ready to go. There are other off-computer backup methods, but I recommend you at least get a larger flash drive and backup your FTM files regularly. If you are already doing so, then ignore what I just said.

Re: Marriage dates appear as missing in FTM 2010

I have the same problem as this.
When downloading into FTM 2010 from Ancestry - the "Import.log" text file created for errors - has mostly :

Line 2437: error 4 : Invalid tag: MARR. Line ignored.
Line 4413: error 4 : Invalid tag: MARR. Line ignored.
Line 5105: error 4 : Invalid tag: MARR. Line ignored.
Line 5397: error 4 : Invalid tag: MARR. Line ignored.

Line 6211: error 4 : Invalid tag: MARR. Line ignored.
Line 6481: error 4 : Invalid tag: MARR. Line ignored.
Line 6905: error 4 : Invalid tag: MARR. Line ignored.
Line 7058: error 4 : Invalid tag: MARR. Line ignored.

There are 33 of them for me. Whilst I havent checked them all as yet - I suppose some can be records that have NO DATE - and can understand that. But its not consistent.

When I run the FTM 2010 DATA ERRORS REPORT I see "The marriage date is missing" - and then check that person's record at Ancestry - there ARE marriage dates there.

Any clue as to what part of this process is causing some records to not fit the Gedcom format for Marriage Dates ?

My file had 64 marriages - and 31 of them downloaded ok with dates.

The ones that did download correctly included: "day / month / year" and "month / year" and "year" only and "Unknown". So it doesnt seem to be any one particular date format that causes a problem.

The Family View for these records FTM 2010 has a blank for the Marriage Date which is consistent with Data Error Report and Import.log error file.

Sorry - but I dont understand the two points you are checking on.

BUT:

By using the FTM 2010 error report and marriage report - I have gone back to my Ancestry tree to realise that each of those errors had a data issue in the online copy. For example - records that had husband / wife - and marriage date - yet when I checked RELATED EVENT - I found that the spouse connection was "unknown". Deleting the marriage and re-entering it - corrected those. So by deleting my tree in FTM 2010 - and downloading again - I can get to a point where I am not seeing any errors on the FTM error reports.
But the download IMPORT.LOG continues to show errors as before.

Yes Russ

I am putting it down to issues relating to my online data.

So the message for anyone else downloading their data from Ancestry into FTM 2010 and getting LOG ERRORS re MARR (marriage) dates - is not to assume that there is some problem with the Gedcom file or FTM 2010 - but rather firstly allow FTM 2010 to point out the errors via its data error reports and either 1) correct the issues in FTM or 2) go back to your online data at Ancestry and make corrections there - and then re-download your data.

Thanks again . . . Lindsay

I dont see errors on the Plan Workspace screen.
Your blog doesnt yet cover this topic.
Ancestry itself doesnt mention this.
Do I assume that you mean the Plan / Current Tree screen ?

Now that you have mentioned this "nice new feature" - can you please give more information - as I dont see it.

I deleted my tree - downloaded it again - still has 24 errors in the Import.log - but I cant relate that to the Plan Workspace.

I downloaded my Online Tree into FTM 2010 - and used the data error reports in FTM 2010 to correct marriage dates in my Online Tree. Hoping to eliminate download errors as the Import.log is of no help at all.
I then deleted my FTM 2010 tree - and downloaded the Online Tree once again - but ended up with the same number of MARR errors. FTM 2010 Data Error report now has no errors.
The Import.log is useless to help you to identify what records need attention.
When the Online Tree is downloaded - you end up with "IMPORT COMPLETE" on the download summary - with the options "VIEW LOG FILE" or "CLOSE".
If you click on VIEW LOG FILE - you see the Import.log in Notepad.
If you click on CLOSE - you are shown FAMILY WORKSPACE at HOME PERSON.
If I go back to PLAN WORKSPACE and expect to see a TO DO LIST as per your example - I dont.
At no time in FTM 2010 have I ever seen a TO DO LIST on PLAN WORKSPACE after an Online Tree download.

Your blog example though is confusing as you give an example of a TO DO LIST - but then say that "With Version 2010, this information is not placed on the To Do / Task list." Well I go along with that - it ISNT. So why show an example ?

Am I missing something here ?

Yes. I corrected my online Family Tree (but having to use FTM 2010 Data Error Report to point to errors re marriage dates - because the download Import.log makes no sense).

Those corrections reduced my download error count from 33 to 24.

I have not at any time in FTM 2010, seen a Task List or To Do list on the Plan Workspace.

Yes - my FTM 2010 is version 19.0.0.206.

If I download a Gedcom file rather than using the "Download a Tree From Ancestry" - it makes no difference. I still get these errors. And neither method gives me the Task List that you were able to generate.

I received an email from Ancestry 6 August offering a discount on FTM 2011 for pre-order - the email saying that Family Tree Maker 2011 "is just weeks away". I placed an order 6 August. Despite learning that FTM 2011 has been shipping since the end of August, Ancestry tells me that I have to wait until October for my order to arrive. Seems that overseas (Australia) comes a distant last in the roll out process, and 30 days later than USA deliveries.

FTM 2012 bug re Data Errors Report

$

I downloaded my Ancestry tree into FTM 2012.

My Data Errors Report has now gone from 5 pages (FTM 2011), to 32 pages (FTM 2012).

Biggest issue is the error item "This individual's children sort order may be incorrect".
This is being caused by the inability of FTM 2012 to correctly handle dates of birth that are in Ancestry as (example) "Abt 1845".
In Ancestry - the dates are in correct order.
FTM 2011 has no such problem.
The exact same Gedcom imported into FTM 2011 handles the issue just fine : dates of birth that have "Abt" (About) - are still sorted in their correct date order.
FTM 2012 puts any person with a date of birth that contains the "Abt" out of order.
On the few I have looked at - it puts them at the end of the list.
If I correct FTM 2012 by applying the "Sort children by birth order" - it will fix the sort issue in FTM 2012 and no longer appear on the Data Errors Report.
BUT
I am going to have those dates all appear again on a Data Errors Report if I again choose to download my Ancestry tree.
The fact that FTM 2011 doesnt have the problem - and FTM 2012 does, suggests that it is a new issue with FTM 2012.

My experience with this issue, is to go to TOOLS / OPTIONS / INTERNET SPEED - confirm your connection speed - click OK - and in the few times this has happened to me - my connection / dashboard has then been re-established.

There is an error box that sometimes comes up "Not Connected to Ancestry" and it asks for a password to get reconnected - but seldom does this happen. More common is - as you say - you just lose connection.

Please give my above suggestion a try - and let us know if it worked for you also.

Hello Margaret

Did you check the HELP function in FTM 2012 ?

You can find it under HELP / PUBLISH / BOOKS / GENEALOGY BOOK / MANAGING A BOOK.

It shows you how to firstly create a Book name - and from there - other help items as you work with that book.

Re: Ancestry-linked tree: Sync Error. Restart Family Tree Maker

Is it possible that you are losing internet connection during the sync process ?

Are you seeing all the usual details in the Ancestry Web Dashboard on that PLAN screen ?

Also on your PLAN screen it shows under "Ancestry Trees" your tree name and two arrows : Up / Down ?

Have you been to Ancestry website and confirmed that your tree there (although not yet in sync) also says "Linked to Family Tree Maker" ? You can see that by clicking on the FAMILY TREES button on the top toolbar.

Have you set your Internet speed in the TOOLS / OPTIONS in FTM 2012 ?

Ancestry servers must be very busy at the moment with the new FTM 2012 sync feature, but that shouldnt be a reason for your "sync error" message.

If you are still having the problem - are you trying to sync from FTM 2012 to Ancestry online ? Uploading a new tree ? Syncing with an existing online tree ?

FTM 2012 : Delete a tree and Download again

The Companion Guide to FTM 2012 says that I can delete a tree in FTM that is currently linked to Ancestry. And as part of that deletion:

"3. If the tree you're deleting is linked to an online tree, you'll be prompted to delete that tree also. Click YES to delete the tree; click NO to keep the tree."

Sounds pretty scarey to me - any slip here and your "original" tree at Ancestry is deleted. A bit of a worry. Anyone done it this way ?

When I looked at "Sync Options" there is one there to "Unlink Trees" - but you then get the just as scarey a message:

"Choosing to unlink these trees will sever the link between them.

Once unlinked, changes in either tree cannot be synchronized to the other and the trees can not be linked together again."

I dont think that means I cant ever link my online tree again to FTM if I start again by downloading again and starting sync again - BUT - thats just an assumption on my part. I would prefer not to take a risk with a wrong assumption.

Anyone deleted their FTM 2012 tree and started fresh with a new download from Ancestry ? Which way did you do it ?

Cheers : Lindsay

Margaret : I havent attempted to build a book in FTM, but I understand it is a compilation of other "reports / charts" etc - and when creating them - by default FTM will use the people you currently have selected in Family or Person view.

Depending on the report / chart that you are creating and saving for use in your book - there will be the option to not just choose the DEFAULT, but to elect who you want to include.

Some charts by their very nature, will want you to select a "someone". For example a Pedigree Chart will want you to select someone to create that pedigree. A "Kinship" report will show everyone you choose.

Apologies that I am not an expert here - just trying to help out.

The point is that FTM 2011 doesnt have this problem with this report using the same data.

The exact same data in FTM 2011 correctly handles sort order of birth dates. And without having to use the "About" Fact Label in Options / Names, Dates, Places / About.

I created this tree in FTM 2012 by downloading a Gedcom from Ancestry. Is that the same end result as using the DOWNLOAD FROM ANCESTRY button on Plan / New Tree ? (But the same Gedcom in 2011 doesnt create this error.)

Sure I can exclude this error category from the report - but I shouldnt have to in FTM 2012 when it wasnt a problem previously.

I was going to try and use that OPTION to see if it made any difference - but to do that - I would have to download my Ancestry tree again - and my other post about deleting a tree in FTM 2012 and starting again has me worried about doing that. And changing that option AFTER the event isnt going to fix anything I guess - changing it in FTM 2012 hasnt made any difference to the Data Errors Report.

Using either the "Sort children by birth order" or the "Show Blended Families" will correct the sort order - but 31 pages of error checking effort for something that shouldnt be an error ? And isnt an error in Ancestry.

Thanks as always Russ for your advice : Lindsay

Sure, I can reduce the report down in FTM 2012 as you suggest - but you keep missing the point.

FTM 2011 for the exact same data does NOT find these records as being in ERROR (child sort order).

FTM 2012 does. To me - thats a bug.

Thanks Russ

So I firstly did an "Unlink" of my FTM tree - and then deleted it.

But initially I still had Dashboard showing my Ancestry tree - but without the option to "Request Download". And sure enough - at Ancestry it still showed as being linked. Nervous moment !! Right click in Dashboard (Ancestry Tree Name / Action) and yet again I was offered the option to UNLINK. So did it again - and that did the trick. Was again given the option "Request Download".

This tree had been on MANUAL Sync. I wonder if that made a difference ? Doing an Unlink and Delete - still hadnt done a full Unlink job. But I worked it out eventually having to do a second UNLINK - interesting - seeing as it really wasnt linked at FTM - but was at Ancestry !! At least it (FTM) gave me an option to fix the issue.

Currently in the process of downloading via the 'Request Download' feature.

My previous effort with FTM 2012 was by importing a downloaded Gedcom from Ancestry.

If this time I can get the Media files to be more in sync (last time - 1069 missing media files and unable to resolve) - it will be much easier to find and fix duplicates.

But a trap for the unwary - dont go crazy deleting stuff in FTM 2012 with Sync in operation - without fully realising that you are also deleting your Ancestry data.

And yes - I had backed up my FTM files / media folder, before doing this exercise.

Thanks again Russ : Lindsay
