Re: Connecting Family Tree Maker to sync with existing tree on Ancestry
If you have an older version of FTM (FTM2014 and earlier) then RootsMagic Essentials (free) will allow you to download the tree to your computer including media. That can be exported as a Gedcom with links to media and then imported by FTM as a new tree.
If you save your existing FTM tree as a full backup including media then RootsMagic Essentials can import that file and then upload it to Ancestry as a tree with media that you can work on. Later you can bring it back to FTM via RootsMagic. I did this during the recent 1939 free trial and it worked okay.

Re: Amber or Red Sync Warnings for 10 days since 16.05.2018
It is now past the end of May and the problems were supposed to be fixed by then.
The red and amber alerts continue unabated no matter what time of the day or night that I log in to Ancestry - at least from here in Australia.
No sign of a green flag for weeks now.
It is getting to be a worry about syncing after having made many new additions to my FTM 2017 Tree.
Very frustrating. Will the warnings never end?

Re: Amber or Red Sync Warnings for 10 days since 16.05.2018
After the almost continual red, things did improve and it was orange all yesterday for me, but unfortunately it's now returned to red. If you click on "Help > Family Tree Maker Tech Support" in FTM2017 you'll see the latest blog entry about the situation, which was updated yesterday. Here's an extract:
"[...] Our engineers have been in communication with Ancestry's to make progress on localizing the problems that have affected syncing during the past couple weeks.
Over the weekend we've seen far fewer interruptions in connectivity and we're hoping to have normal sync conditions very soon. In the meantime, sync weather may continue to be steady orange (unless there are serious interruptions and it goes red) until the system is stable."
Evidently those "serious interruptions" have actually happened, but I'm still hopeful things will settle down soon.

Update: I'm now back to orange, and have just successfully synced. As always, you sync on orange at your own risk, and should always take a full backup before the sync, just in case it fails.

When is Sync going to be Green again?
It is June 4th and I am continuing to received the amber/red signal for Sync. It was my understanding that everything would be 'go' by the end of May. Has there been a delay? If so, when can we expect to see green again?

Re: When is Sync going to be Green again?
It was announced that Ancestry hoped to be finished with the migration/maintenance by the end of May. It was not announced by anyone that Sync would be green on 1 June.
I would much rather wait until the issues have been resolved. That said, I synced 3 different trees under orange over the weekend, without issue. 2 are small; 1 is nearly 16K people.

Re: When is Sync going to be Green again?
Software McKiev posted an update on their blog on 1st June, explaining that there were unforseen delays, and they updated this again yesterday the 3rd. You can check for the latest post using "Help > Family Tree Maker Tech Support". The relevant part currently says:
"Our engineers have been in communication with Ancestry's to make progress on localizing the problems that have affected syncing during the past couple weeks. Your guess is as good as mine as to when it will all be smooth sailing and green again. I've been successfully syncing on orange today, but as I've said elsewhere, you do that at your own risk, and you should always take a backup first.
After weeks of not being able (or being discouraged) to sync, I imagine there will be a huge backlog of users trying to sync and changes to be synced, so it wouldn't surprise me if Ancestry / SMK are deliberately leaving the alert on Orange for the time being, to try to avoid the servers being overwhelmed. It may be a coincidence, but the Ancestry site itself seems to be really grinding for me at the moment, with severe delays bringing up pages, missing hints, and even incorrect icons in these message boards (my "reply" icon is now a "previous page" left angle bracket!)

I forgot myself for the moment. This is Ross' board, and I should never invade his private space.

Burgess, you jumped to the wrong conclusion. I prepared and posted my comment before I saw yours, not in response to it, and we cross -posted. Your sarcasm is completely unjustified and unwelcome, and does you no favours at all.

Re: When is Sync going to be Green again?
I sent a message to Ancestry yesterday (June 4) asking when sync would be possible. They responded 3 hours later with this:
"We are sorry to hear you are currently having sync issues with Family Tree Maker. This was a known issue while we were doing our site upgrades. We highly value every customer and regret that a small portion of our customers are experiencing issues as we complete our migration to a more powerful computing environment that will enable us to serve you better. We are committed to providing more content, more connections, enhanced hints, and streamlined search to make your discovery process even more enjoyable. Please know that your data is safe and secure at all times. For example, if you have any data loading issues, please be reassured that all of your work on your tree remains intact and will return. Our dedicated technical teams are working 24/7 to ensure that any remaining issues are resolved as quickly as possible."

Re: Connecting Family Tree Maker to sync with existing tree on Ancestry
First, they are currently having problems with syncing due to maintenance work Ancestry is doing.
You cannot sync your current FTM tree with the old one on Ancestry. You will have to upgrade FTM to FTM 2017. You can then delete the tree on ancestry and upload your FTM tree with the sync option.
Wait until the sync problems are fixed.

Re: Connecting Family Tree Maker to sync with existing tree on Ancestry
Jane,
Depending of what version you currently have and have synced with it before, you just may be able to sync to the old tree. The sync name would be within the data of FTM. When you log into Ancestry through FTM 2017, it will find or not the old Ancestry tree.
This can happen ONLY if you are using the same Ancestry today as you were long time ago.
You do NOT have to be s paying subscriber to do any syncing.

Irrelevant Web Search results
Web Search is yielding up incredibly irrelevant results. Results that should be appearing are not there. I seem to be getting a lot of School Yearbook entries. What's the situation with others? This started a couple of days ago.

Re: Not Happy with Update to FTM 2017
I am having the same issues since the update, and have done all the things told to try but still not helping, very frustrated. Today even try to uninstall/reinstall FTM 17 but then could not re-upload my tree until i had installed the undated it still did not help. I am using the Ancestry site but very its inconvenient when you have put so much time and work into your tree then have to deal with having to sort out problems.
Hope they sort it soon.

Re: Irrelevant Web Search results
This sounds like it might be the same problem that I first noticed happening to me today. My search results inside FTM 2017 (which I have not yet upgraded to the latest release) no longer show anything from the birth, marriage or death indexes or from any censuses, so are basically useless. Doing exactly the same search on the Ancestry website works fine, but this is no use to me since I can't synchronise any changes I make there with my offline tree.

Re: Not Happy with Update to FTM 2017
I think the disappearance of the categories might not be directly related to the update to FTM 2017. I have not yet installed the update but the categories have disappeared for me too, so maybe it is actually related to the "improvements" that Ancestry are currently making on their end.

Re: Irrelevant Web Search results
When ever I click a Green Leaf or just click the Web Search icon I do get a selection of hits.
I see State and US census, State death and birth records and Find A Grave hits.
BUT if I was to click on the "New Search" icon in the upper right corner of the Hits pane, and then clear the "Exact check marks for both First and Last names, I will get several thousand hits.

relinking trees from Ancetry to FTM
I have a number of trees on Ancestry which do not show up at all on the plan page of FTM 2017 for Mac, the latest build. How can I download these trees so they will be linked and can be edited on FTM 2017?
