Re: Report on specific generation

In the future, you may want to try using a Person ID fact to facilitate filtering of individuals in your tree.

I use a generational Person ID fact based upon my pedigree chart. For my ancestors, each person is given a two part ID number. The first part is the generation of the individual with respect to me (the root person), and the second part is their position in the generation. All other relatives and inlaws are tied to these ancestor numbers. Filtering for a specific generation or several generations is relatively easy. The attachment shows the Person ID numbers for 4 generations of a pedigree tree.

As I mentioned, I've previously been syncing when orange and not had any apparent problems, but of course you'd do it at your own risk, and should always take a backup first in case it fails. Perhaps everyone's swamping the servers trying to sync today, and that's making things worse? Anyway, your "orange" suggests it's not a permanent "red" at the moment, so I might keep trying! Thanks.

This board is for the discussion of the use of Family Tree Maker software.

Your question would be better placed on a board with some connection to the name or naming conventions.

Syncing Blocked by Ancestry.com

I started using Family Book Creator to write a book. I integrate my stories with the tree info it creates. I am using Ancestry as my master tree which i periodically sync to FTM. The problem has been that quite frequently syncing is blocked by Ancestry due to an unreliable connection with Ancestry. I have been waiting a couple of days now to sync and there is someone waiting to edit some stuff for me. Very frustrating!! We need reliable tools. No one will tell me how long this is going to go on. I really wish Ancestry would make a stronger commitment to reliable syncing with FTM. I am a long time user of Ancestry.com and have been happy in the past but lately very disappointed - first by their lack of interest in restoring the wealth of rich genealogical information on Rootsweb and now by the unreliable support for FTM. Ancestry is not cheap - I am going to be looking for an alternative.

If you look at other threads in this forum you'll see that this is a widely known issue, seemingly due to Ancestry carrying maintenance and/or upgrading their servers. This has affected Ancestry performance in general, and also FTM syncing, resulting in frequent Orange warnings and sometimes Red "blocks". This has become progressively worse over the last few days, and although Ancestry said they intended to complete the work by the 31st May, they've acknowledged that they've not managed to do that, and at the moment most of us are getting Red almost all the time. I agree it's really frustrating, but I imagine Ancestry are working hard to resolve it, because bad publicity doesn't do them any favours in the long term. They claim that the work, once finished, will result in better performance than before all this started. I imagine there's always a trade off between cost and performance, what with more source records, more users, and more member trees being added all the time.

To be fair, although it feels like forever, this has really only been a major issue for a few weeks, and prior to that I've found that syncing with the new FTM2017 (and especially after the 23.1 update) has always been fast and reliable. I imagine it will be fixed sooner or later (hopefully sooner!) and after a while we'll probably all forget about it and get back to researching and syncing as before.

Thanks everyone. I think the kinship report sorted by kinship should do what I want. I like the idea of a fact index number, that would be a lot of work though.

After reading all of this negative commentary on the inability to “sync” to Ancestry com, I have a feeling that I have wasted nearly $100 on a product I cannot use since I bought it one week ago. It doesn’t sound like this software can accommodate the 3700+ people on my Ancestry tree along with all of the supporting data...

Trusting Ancestry or any vendor to protect your genealogy - it's your responsibility!

I have used Ancestry and then FTM since its inception. I will never trust decades of research to a vendor or the Cloud! It is my responsibility to safeguard my work and my genealogy. I have 24 Trees. My personal tree has 43,000 people on it. FTM is the only program that syncs with Ancestry and that syncs media. All other programs accept Gedcom files but no media. I house all my trees on Ancestry but sync them to FTM on my desktop and that to a Cloud. If all these companies go poof I want my data in my hands. I also have external drive backups that are done monthly and left at a friend’s house. These constant problems with Ancestry are disconcerting indeed. Here is something factual – Ancestry has “lost” or cannot locate some people’s Trees! This has happened to two people I am in contact with on a research blog. Those two know others who are experiencing the same issue. Another sign to me of an impending disaster. This is a true mess. It is my opinion that Ancestry has become too big and is difficult to manage. I am not as optimistic as some on this thread that all will be fine. The record collections on Ancestry are invaluable resources. The trees are overall, crap. Incorrect facts entered with 100 people just copying it to their tree. Recently all of the data storage was moved to the Amazon Cloud (yes, that Amazon) and the data center in Utah will be decommissioned. Another reason to be sure I have complete copies of my trees! I will soon also upload Gedcom files to another program, probably RootsMagic. One light commentary and this one about Family Search. Now they want into the tree act. That I am not doing. People have started trees and those that are in my line are showing up on the front screen complete with beautiful portraits – of my great grandparents, parents, other direct and collateral ancestors. I get messages such as don’t you want to learn your background, blah, blah. I already know it! Those photos from wherever you got them are mine!! I posted them to Ancestry in the first place. The originals hang in my home. Funny!

RootsMagic Essentials permits the upload and download of your tree, including all media, as I did during the free 1939 Register weekend.

It's a basic, sensible rule, to keep your data under your own control.

And not to take too much notice of other people's research....

This is a temporary issue due to Ancestry maintenance. It's nothing to do with a deficiency in FTM, which is perfectly capable of handling a tree of your size. My tree is only about 3,300 people, though with 4-5GB of media, but other people have huge trees with tens of thousands of individuals - some over 100 thousand I believe - and they have been successfully syncing until this current problem that started a few weeks ago.

I know it must be very frustrating if you've just started to use FTM at this time, especially if all your research is already on Ancestry and you can't yet download it, but once syncing is working again I hope you'll find that it's a powerful and flexible tool for genealogy. Inevitably, it also has quite a few quirks, bugs and deficiencies, but that's the case with virtually all software of this level of complexity.

When reading this forum, bear in mind that most people only post here because they have a problem or a question, and not when everything's working fine as it does most of the time!

FTM - MacKiev's announcement

Just in case anyone hasn't already seen it, here is the latest blog entry from SMK about the ongoing lack of FTM sync (https://support.mackiev.com/336868-Sync-Outages-for-FTM-2017, easily accessed from the "Help > Family Tree Maker Tech Support" menu entry):

"Sync Outages for FTM 2017
SYNC OUTAGE - UPDATED June 1

There are ongoing interruptions in Ancestry connectivity, and we continue to advise everyone to avoid syncing, uploading and downloading until we have confirmed that the connection with Ancestry is stable. Ancestry has been performing maintenance that can impact features such as sync – click here for more information. Even though the maintenance was expected to have concluded on May 31, we are in communication with Ancestry and they assure us that work is ongoing and a high priority.

As a best practice, we recommend that you make frequent backups of your tree. If you have an urgent need and must sync with Ancestry, make sure to create a fresh backup first. For help, click here for Windows, or click here for Mac.

Just got an "Orange" and successfully synced a few hundred changes in both directions, at last. Hope this is a sign things will be improving soon!

Sync was just successful at 1:14 AM MDT on June 2, 2018. My online tree and desktop version are again together.

The workaround does not work. You may get some results if you remove three categories and leave Family Tree checked but they are irrelevant. They are are not sorted as before and any attempt to reduce the scope of the search results in no results being returned at all. ("Your Search returned zero good matches" ) This was working perfectly until very recently, is it asking too much to put things back as they were?

Apart from the missing categories list, my UK-based search seems to work fine without any workaround, so it's obviously not affecting everyone the same way, which may be one reason why they haven't managed to fix it yet. For example, a default search for someone in my tree with all four options ticked gives me 1,892 matches in FTM, and a fairly similar 1,792 in Ancestry. I haven't checked them all individually of course, but the results look similar and are all relevant. Narrowing down e.g. by selecting Exact on the name also works correctly in either system, giving me 5 matches. The missing categories bug is a nuisance though.

I now have Orange again - so - I have done a sync, after doing a backup. I checked the last person I was working on, and everything had been transferred.

Trouble is, I altered around 100 people, so now can't remember everyone!

Hope things are soon back to normal.

Each tree has synced without issues.

Not Happy with Update to FTM 2017

Just putting a vent out there and wonder if I am alone. I am a long time user of FTM and have been doing genealogy for over 30 years. I always liked the speed and options in FTM, but see more issues in the program since being taken over.
One issue I have is the program freezing in a couple of areas.
1. When I go to add a media item to a source. I click on "Add Media" and my program has frozen.
2. When I go to download a source from the Ancestry search, it will freeze.

I have had a couple of email conversations with Mackiev about these issues and none of their suggestions has helped me. One should not have to go through so many attempted fixes to get it to work properly. My computer is new, completely clean, and everything else works fine.
Since the new update, I also don't like the Ancestry searching. You used to have a list showing on the left hand side of which items were available. Example, if I went into Deaths, I would see on the left things like "Find-a-Grave" and other items. I found this made the searching faster. Also the changes when selecting to show Members' Family Trees.
Sorry to go on, I just wondered if I was alone in this.

Have a great day!!

Re: FTM 2017 Crashing???

Did you ever get a satisfactory resolution to this? When I open FTM it shows the home screen for about 2 seconds, and then crashes. I uninstalled, tried it in safe mode (it didn't work), tried repairing disk permissions (not necessary), etc. Finally started from scratch and reinstalled and still have the same outcome.
