I haven't been online to use my FTM for sometime and have not been able to use it now for a few days - what is this red and orange weather alert
phase - everyone is commenting about - I see nothing in the bar - what am I missing?

I agree, and that's certainly the safest - perhaps I'm being unwise in syncing. But the way I work in both Ancestry and FTM makes it very frustrating if I don't.

Unfortunately I think the only way to be fairly sure of what a sync has done is to export GEDCOMs from both FTM and Ancestry before and after the sync, and compare them, but even minor changes can renumber source references etc., and that proliferates through the gedcom, making a straight comparison very difficult. I just rely on keeping a history of FTM backups for as far back as I can, and treating FTM as the "master" that I can restore and even re-upload if I have to, because I don't want to lose FTM-specific things such as resolved locations, colour coding and tasks.

Hopefully not much longer to wait! :-)

In FTM2017, on the Sync toolbar icon on the top right corner, you should see a little connection status "flash" - either green, orange or red (although you can turn it off in Options, and I think it was only introduced in the 23.1 update, so if you haven't updated and you're still on 23.0 you won't see that).

Either way, when you click on the icon and select "Sync now" or click the "Sync now" button on the Tree Plan workspace, if the tree isn't already in sync you'll get a sync popup dialog window showing the current status - even if it's a green "all ok".

At the moment, almost everyone seems to be getting red (sync unavailable) or orange (sync not recommended), as shown in the attached screenshot, which also shows the orange flag on the sync icon.

Ancestry are currently upgrading their servers, and hopefully the situation will be resolved very soon.

Report on specific generation

I am using FTM 2017. I would like to generate a report showing all the individuals in my tree from a specific generation. For example, all my 4th great grandparents.

I haven't figured a way to do this. Any ideas?

This doesn't actually limit the report to just those individuals. But you could run a Kinship report for all individuals and Sort by Kinship.

Here is one way to do it; not sure if there is an easier method:
- Select yourself in your tree
- In Publish select Relationship Reports then Kinship report.
- Choose Select Individuals; click on Individuals to Include; click Ancestors and make sure Include Ancestors' Descendants is unchecked.
- Select Sort Individuals by Kinship
- Click generate report
- Click the Share button and export to CSV or RTF
- Use a spreadsheet program (CSV) or work processor (RTF) to edit the report and delete all but the desired generation - they will all be grouped together.

And you could limit your results a little more by selecting just as far as the generation you want to include.

My aunt loved to tell the story that her father, Grover Cleveland Wells, got his name because people were offered $5.00 to name their sons after the president. I cannot find any reports or documentation about this, so I'm wondering if it's just a family story. Has anyone else ever heard of this?

Thank you for forwarding the explanation. There has been much more red and orange of late, perhaps this is why. Only four minutes until June.

Here we are in June, still not fixed. Do I laugh or cry at this point? I am paying for this poor service and so I suppose I should be crying.

Well, it looks like Ancestry have solved the ORANGE sync alert problem in FTM - it's now permanently RED for me :-(

Yes, it seems to be permanently red for me as well! I have been doing quite a bit of work, adding the 1939 register entries on my Ancestry tree, so didn't want to risk a sync when the orange was showing.

My experience was that if I managed to "get in" on an orange, the sync completed OK regardless, even if the toolbar had turned red during the sync. I think the red is simply a "gate" that's closed to prevent further connections, but doesn't automatically interrupt a sync that's already running. Sadly that option has now gone for me.

Hopefully they've just disabled sync while doing final testing and/or server switch-over or suchlike, and it'll be up again soon. It can only get better, I suppose! :-)

I just found a slightly vague acknowledgement on the Ancestry UK Facebook site that it's not yet sorted, though no indication of timescales and no specific mention of FTM syncing:

"We expected the transition to be completed by the end of May, but because of the complexity of the infrastructure and the number of features we are working on at the same time, you might still experiencing some intermittent issues and glitches. If you notice an issue with the site, please report it here https://bit.ly/2xwWkzR along with your username and our developers will review the issues and prioritize them according to the number of users impacted. While we cannot guarantee a personal response to your feedback, we can guarantee we will review it carefully and will incorporate it into the resolution process."

Yes, I've been experiencing this problem. The workaround works. However, it is obvious that FTM is pointing to an incorrect search-page URL. The current search-page only allows Broad or Exact searches (missing the more granular controls). If you past the correct url (https://www.ancestry.com/search/) into the Address bar inside FTM, you will get the correct search-page. I had reported this months ago to MacKiev and they let it drop.

Got their self-congratulatory email yesterday about them having time to attend two conventions at once! Not a single mention of any of the current issues. They take their cues from Ancestry in customer relations.
