Re: Thread for complaining
I have had the FTM 2012 for about a week and a half. Have windows 7 and have plenty of memory on the computer. Did all the recommended Window7 issues. Wish this issue would have been discusseed prior to me purchasing this product. Crashes all the time. I bought it specifically to Merge duplicates in my very large tree and it is so frustrating. Back up files takes hrs. and the list of people to merge does not save and when it crashes you have to redo it and the load for the merge list can be up to 6 hrs. What a huge pain and waste of money. Have written two emails and no response from customer assistance and the hold is 20 min to and hr and then disconnects itself also. How nice. Don't buy and suggest that either fix the issues for those of us who did or refund and I will find another program since there are others out there

Re: FTM 2012 Working on "Book", Program Fails
Sorry for the delay in replying.
I have not recieved any update from FTM 2012 on the solution to the problem.
However, since the lastest FTM 2012 Program Update, the problem has not reoccurred.
If you are still experiencing a problem, my more recent posts to this thread (prior to the FTM Update) outlined as best as I could the conditions for the failure

An Incident has been set up by your Program Support Team and they sent me an email asking more questions.
I replied, and although my emails were originally rejected (previously noted)they are no longer being rejected.
I do not know whether they have receive my reply.
Also, they said that another thread had been set up for my problem; however, I have not found it.
Can you comment on the current status?

I am running version 21.0.0.388 and so far so good (no crashes while working on Book). I have done frequent moves from chapter to chapter, which under the latest version caused the program to crash with great frequency.

I am sorry, but the problem has not been resolved. I have been working on the "Book" function for a couple of hours with good success (thus the previous note); however, the problem has now returned and is consistant.
Followed your recommendation under the title
"What can I do if Family Tree Maker 2008-2012 continually crashes on Windows 7?"
1. Running FTM Version 21.0.0.466, uninstalled it, reinstalled it and applied all updates
2. Running Windows 7 Home Premium Version 6.1.7601 Service Pack 1 Build 7601
3. Microsoft WSE 3.0 Runtime was installed - Uninstalled and reinstalled it
4. Ensured that FTM 2012 is being run as Administrator
5. Began creating a new Book on a separate previously created FTM Database
6. Moved the entire database to another PC
7. Created a new User Account - Uninstalled FTM and Reinstalled it
8. Removed my Security package and ran FTM
9. Ran program under Safe Mode"
10. Ensured that .NET framework 3.5 SP1 is on
The problem appears to occur in the presentation of a specific page. The page is blanked out as a 1st step and then the program crashes
Also, as noted in a previous post, the Book operations appeared to work OK prior to the 1st program update
Help!

The problem appears to have been resolved at my end. After uninstalling the program and reinstalling it, I am no longer experiencing any program crash conditions.
I followed the Knowledge Based website: regarding crashes which led me to the above solution. Why the problem with the program I don’t know, other than it began to occur after the 1st update.
Anyway, thanks for your help in resolving the issue.

Re: FTM 2012 Working on "Book", Program Fails
I am working on Version 21.0.0.452.
I believe that KATHYMARIEANN described the problem better that I.
"Yes I have had this problem [but only after the FTM 2012 update] and the system crashes and then when I restart the system I get the message that the system was closed down incorrectly"
This problem has been occurring constantly since the Critical Fix was installed. I encountered no problems prior to the program update.
Also, in answer to your question, I am talking about the Chapter List, in the Left Hand Column?
Clicking on an item in that list seems to take it to a fail condition.
Also, this problem has no relationship to the time it takes to generate Table of contents etc.
I might add that, although, KATHYMARIEANN has described a work around, that is an onerous task from my perspective, and the problem has shut down any progress on Book development.

I am in South Africa and have the same problem - its really annoying as I need to get these syncs done - maybe the best thing is not to work on line but just stick to desktop version.
I hope they are right with the maintenance issues they have and get it sorted out chop chop !!!!

Re: Orange or Red Weather alerts for the past 10 days
I haven't been able to sync for at least a good couple of weeks for this reason. No green light that I have seen. This is a problem for me because I have changes on both my FTM and Ancestry.com trees that need to be updated.
↧
Re: Orange or Red Weather alerts for the past 10 days
It may be different for you, but here in the UK I've been able to sync frequently and reliably on Orange over the last week or two, after I gave up waiting for an elusive Green! Sometimes, even though the FTM toolbar icon shows a Red alert, if I try to sync I get Orange and can then proceed. Other times, even though the toolbar icon has only an orange alert, when I try, I get a Red and can't sync, but retrying a little while later usually gets me an Orange eventually, and I can re-sync my tree (about 3,300 people). I've usually got a handful of changes, and have been syncing them in either and/or both directions (I tend to do my research on Ancestry, but general housekeeping like editing profile photos and rationalising addresses on FTM).
Of course, you do this at your own risk, and should always take a backup before any sync attempt. It would be safest to wait until you have a Green status as strongly recommended by Ancestry/FTM. Hopefully we'll be back to "Greens" later this week when (or if?) Ancestry's maintenance upgrades are completed.
As others have said, its very disappointing that Ancestry haven't at least put up a warning banner on the website, as they certainly used to do in the past for service issues. That might at least reduce the number of endless "why is it so slow?" queries. I even got an email from them this morning, expecting it to be some sort of more detailed explanation for the disruption and an apology, but instead it was simply some "trumpet blowing" about the addition of the 1939 register. That's great, incidentally, but it seems significantly poorer than FMP's 1939 implementation, which has more accurate transcriptions and things like proper street addresses which, unlike in Ancestry, are shown in the transcription even if they're obscured by an "officially closed" in the image itself. It makes it more difficult to decide if I should continue with my FMP subscription, which I use mainly for the 1939, as well as Ancestry.

Help with who to put in the family tree
Hi there,
I am making a family tree for my father-in-law. I have his ancestors history till around 1850. But the problem comes in with the family at this point. My Husband and I got married in 2016 but we do not have children yet so, does my name go on the tree then? Also, his brother has a child with his Fiance, they will get married in the future, if her name belongs on the family tree because they have a child, I will have to use her maiden name. Will that look weird?
Please help, so confused!

Re: Help with who to put in the family tree
Hi,
It rather depends on what you want to see. Some people only put their direct ancestors on their tree but I feel that loses some of the social history of the family.
You should always use maiden names on a tree (otherwise the women's lines are lost) so it won't look odd to show a partner's name. Add the marriage when available.
One thing I would say is that it is important to gather accurate, documented information so I would avoid depending on other trees unless you can see their documentation: birth, marriage, death certificates etc. I would also suggest you try to familiarize yourself with the possible locations especially if people were born in places like London. Many cities cover vast areas but, at the moment, Ancestry often gives a birthplace on the UK 1911 census or a residential area on the 1939 Register as "London". A family living in one part of London probably has no links with a similarly named family living elsewhere in London because of the huge population - both now and in earlier centuries. I don't know if Ancestry transcribes place names in the same way in other countries.
You might want to look at some of the help pages on Ancestry, for instance:
https://support.ancestry.co.uk/s/article/Getting-started-on-...
You might also want to look at other family history sites which also give guidance on what level of detail to collect.

Re: Help with who to put in the family tree
Is not your husbands family part of your family?
Why make a separate tree for him, just include this information within your and husband's tree.
As for the brother, enter them and status them (the parents) as Friends with the child. Then when they do get married, change the status and add the marriage date and place.
