Re: FTM 2017 RELEASE - Worst upgrade since the beginning.

Curt - with reference to the definition of mentioned "Unrelated People":
In my large "master" FTM 2017 tree of 55,272 people, all of the "Unrelated People" have the following description on the "People Tab" below their name in the I.D. box in the upper right corner where the sex silhouette or picture appears: "No direct relationship found", which means this person does not have a relationship to the Home Person.
Is that the same description, "No direct relationship found", you see on your "People Tab" for your "unrelated People"?
And am I correct in understanding that you have successfully used the "Uploaded and Link to Ancestry" from the Plan screen of FTM 2017to Sync the very same tree to Ancestry?
If your answer to both questions is yes, then that shoots my theory to pieces.

David, I think the problem is with the master Place Authority list, not the instances of place names in a specific tree. Yes, you can edit those, but then they're no longer "validated" and organised hierarchically, which is the whole point of using the place name system in FTM. What you can't edit is FTM's master list. It's held in a local database file (PlaceAuthority.DB3), and with an appropriate DB3 utility you could in theory edit it yourself, but annoyingly FTM/MacKiev/whoever have password-protected it, so that's not possible (unless someone knows the password). It's really frustrating, because the hierarchical place name system would be great for organising and analysing locations and rationalising them, but the large number of errors, omissions and inconsistencies in the list greatly undermines its usefulness. For example, being in the UK I have many relatives in London, but the London boroughs are bizarrely and inconsistently organised (evidently by someone unfamiliar with UK addresses). Some are shown in Kent or Surrey rather than London (even ones that have been in Greater London for decades), and others are unhelpfully subdivided into wards, which are rarely used in real-world addresses. For example, Battersey, which is now in central London, is only shown as being in Surrey, so I either have to change a location to "Battersey, Surrey, England" which is completely inappropriate, or edit it to be an unvalidated Battersey in "Wandsworth, London" or just London. Similarly, "Kensington" isn't available at all, but five separate subdivisions, "Kensington Brompton", "Kensington Earl's Court", "Kensington Kensal Green", "Kensington Knightsbridge", and "Kensington Notting Hill" are. Identifying which of these subdivisions is appropriate for an address (especially a historic one) is often impossible, and even if not, it 's both tedious to determine, and results in an address that simply looks "wrong" - no-one would ever write an address as being in "Kensington Kensal Green, London, England"! Being able to edit the master place name authority, e.g. to add "Kensington, London, England" and "Battersey, London , England" etc. would solve this, but without that ability I end up with innumerable unvalidated addresses all in the "London, England" location, which defeats the object of trying to organize them.

I have a message in one of the other thread discussing sync problem, but I took a different approach this afternoon. I have a husband and wife client from which I built a single tree - about 4600 records. This afternoon, I did the Export Branch under the person tab and essentially created two separate trees which works fine because there are are no intersections of ancestors with the husband and wife. Both trees are about 2300 records. I then loaded the wife's tree and successfully linked it at Ancestry. The husband's tree failed to upload and link. Right now, McKiev FTM is suggesting no syncs, so I'm hoping that the failure is a general issue. If not, that suggests that there is some construct in the husband's tree that is causing the sync failure. There are no relationship issues because of using Export Branch.

Hello Michael,
Glad you posted this as I was getting ready to load one of my databases to Ancestry. Do not have anything loaded at ancestry so will be following the sync issues.

Thanks

You don't need an older version of FTM to be working to back up your files. Just copy the Family Tree Maker folder (if in Windows) to another location and rename it.

You can work either in FTM or in Ancestry. It is recommended to only work on one side before sync-ing. In other words - add records in FTM, then sync. Add records in Ancestry, then sync. Working in that way eliminates the "conflicts" that arise when you make changes to a person or family from both sides.

So far I've found limited use for the FamilySearch hints in FTM2017. Unlike the Ancestry hints, it doesn't really you a source citation for anything you merge: it simply links the FamilySearch individual. I am very picky about having actual sources for the information you can't really get that with FamilySearch hints except by digging manually into FamilySearch, and even then if you find an interesting source you can't just link a fact and the source into your FTM data.

And so it goes - still not able to sync. Unable to connect with Chat on the Pilot program. No one has ever responded. Unable to reach any other help.
this last time the media did finish processing but that it all. I have over 11k people and understand it will take time but at about 3/4 way, 2 hour mark it just stops working.
and couldn't find the booze either.
Someone mentioned the Facebook group. I will try there. Although that is interesting as they threaten during the Beta testing what would happen if you mentioned bad experience on Facebook.
Well, it can't get any worse than it is.

To all:

I've been working on a database with about 3700 names. For the past few days, I've had no problem syncing, and it generally takes only a few minutes.

Since last night, the weather report has been reporting orange, so i've held off trying. Anyone else experiencing this?

Also, I just noticed the sync icon now shows bidirectional syncing (both up and down arrows are lit), whereas a few minutes ago only the up arrow was. If this means FTM thinks there are changes on A.C to be brought down, something's wrong as I never edit online. There should only be upsync changes.

saving to computer - copies of bmd, etc. - doesn't work?

I think this may be a repeat of a problem I experienced some years ago but the workaround of "open in another window" doesn't work this time. I have had to update Win 10 and that is now up to date. I'm using IE 11 rather than Edge. Anybody had this and solved it, please?

After you add things to your Ancestry tree use Sync to add them to your linked FTM tree.

"So far I've found limited use for the FamilySearch hints in FTM2017. Unlike the Ancestry hints, it doesn't really you a source citation for anything you merge: it simply links the FamilySearch individual."

I've been playing with RootsMagic, allowing it to automatically search FamilySearch and download the identified matches from FS into a copy of my tree. There were so many errors and no sources that I've abandoned that method. However, what I do now is to use the names and FS ids from that process in order to search and download gedcoms using a python program and then combine those gedcoms into one RM file, after correcting the errors of course. The python program can download just the one FSid or several, or several generations of ancestors and descendants and spouses. There are absolutely no sources or anything other than user provided names and dates.

Sometimes a person can have several different ids so a fair amount of effort goes into reducing these problems.

The resultant tree can then be used for guidance, but not treated as being accurate, unless you are a clickologist - my original list of 450 matches has ballooned to over 3000......

FTM 2017 Find and Replace no longer functions

I use Find and Replace allot. With upgrade to 2017, attempts to perform a find and replace throws up a black program window real fast, then FTM just closes. Of course upon re-opening program I get the "not closed properly" message...the edits attempted are not done.

Anyone else have this problem?

I agree with your comment about FS hints. I can usually figure out where there are holes in my documentation and then I use FS to plug them if I can, but I have to to a raw records search in FS. Family trees posted on FS really don't help much.
