Re: FTM2012 or A.com

I didn't lose it actually, the way I describe it is, if you ha all of your file cabinets organized and complete and then your Grandkids come over and open the drawers and dump all your file in a pile and pick them back up! Does that make sense! FTM had my grandmother married to a second cousin of my husbands, all of my Mother-in-laws husbands family was gone and her husband was married to her daughter-in-law. to name just a few! It was chaotic. I'm just working on-line until I get ready to start working on my family history book. At that time I'll re-install it, and just not sync anything at all and not even go online maybe.

Thank you, that was very helpful.
I am brand new to using this software.

I am working with a lot of information that has been taken 'as is', and have entered very little of the actual burial data myself.

I have managed to filter the index down using your instructions, and have the desired list of people.

With a little more digging around, I was able to output a report in the format I was hoping for as well.

Thanks!

Sean,

Thanks for the hints. The solution on PC is:

Share (click icon in upper right corner)
Output in Share as EMF file
Open PAINT and input EMF file
Output from PAINT as TIFF or BMP
Open ACROBAT or other PDF creation program and input TIFF or BMP
Output to PDF

This will not match the quality of directly printing to PDF but is usable.

Try using the Name editor (the pencil icon on the right side of the name input box). That will open up an input area with separate divisions for first, middle, last, suffix.

Sean,
Do a Goggle on "Free PDF Printer" and you will find many of them.
PDF Creator is a very good one

In finding a PDF printer, make sure it is not limited to 200" like the earlier ACROBAT was.

Re: FTM 2012 dies with every compact file attempt - online or offline

Ok - so it doesn't blow up when the file is closed so maybe that will be a workaround. What is funny to me here is that support told me to run compacts on a regular basis to get around an out of memory problem I had a couple of weeks ago. I suspect that even in XP compatibility mode FTM isn't all that compatible with windows 8, but thanks for the tip. Will use that for now.

yep - good idea. I have back up my file continuously and have reloaded the backup multiple times - mostly to get around the memory issue I had a couple of weeks ago. The result usually is that compact works until I change and resync something then the next compact blows up even after reloading. Will try compacting while the file is closed for a while - it seems to work without blowing FTM up. Thx for the reply - I do appreciate it.

I'd be curious, now that you have compacted it while closed, if FTM will still crash if you compact the file while open. Sometime, compacting while closed will resolve issues in the file that can't be resolved when the file is open...

well - the answer is - FTM still blows up. As per your suggestion the compact while file closed did not blow up FTM. And neither did the compact I did right away after opening the file. But - after making some source citation changes and resyncing, the problem came back.
I should clarify my original since it is maybe misleading; the compact itself actually appears to work, but when FTM goes to redisplay the family pedigree screen it blows up.

I repeated the compact with file closed, file open and after another change - and sure enough it blew up again. I guess I really need to go to support to figure out what is wrong with my tree.
If you have any more thoughts it would be very much appreciated. But I guess I really need to go to support to figure this out, maybe..
Thanks for the help.

Contact tham and request the enhancement

http://ancestry.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_er4cyPjj5BJKIZf

Best to make a good 'business case' for the proposed enhancement and how you would use it. Remember that you are competing with numerous other requests and development resources are limited, so put up a good story.

I have contacted the developers requesting the birthday of living individuals report which is a great one for family reunions.

I keep a copy of FTM 16 and if I want it, I GEDCOM a file to FTM 16 and run the report. But I would like it in both FTM Windows and FTM Mac. (I use both)

"Barbara, what I don't understand is why FTM 2012 cannot do what the SIMPLER, FTM 16 could do. I am now trying how to figure out an Address Report / Contact List, since I have so many names, addresses, telephone numbers and email addresses of current family members!
~Yvette"

It is not a matter of simplicity, but rather development resources. FTM 2012 and FTM Mac 2 can do many, many things that FTM 16 could not do. It is a matter of priorities (affected by demand/market research and enhancement requests etc, as to what gets in or out.

In terms of a report for addresses, contacts etc, the custom report in FTM 2012 will do this for you as it did in FTM 16. And in both cases exporting (Sharing) the custom report as a CSV file and polishing it in Excel, Access or Word gives you the best outcome.

Search Result Detail

Ok I am sure that there is a simple fix to this and have seached with no result.

When I do a search on a member in a faimly tree (I am using FTM2010) the infomation from a public family tree used to come up in the lower right hand corner and I could merge this infomation. Now it is doing nothing but coming up with the symbel saying that it is loading.

How ever if I do a seach for Facts and Sources it works perfect.

Any suggestions?

Re: Citing Censuses in FTM - a rant

Well I'll be! How's anyone supposed to find it there?

In FTM '06 it was in the Master Source dialog. Attaching it to an individual citation is much better (now that I know it's there!); after all, it's not the reliability of the source, per se, but its reliability viz. a given fact that's in question. My grandmother's hand-drawn family tree would be quite reliable for my mother's date of birth; not so much for thrice-great uncle on my grandfather's side.

One last question: is there a way to filter based on source quality? Maybe I'd like to hand off only my well-documented research.

I thought John was very patient with the OP's rant. Obviously he has a problem but starting off with throwing the program in the garbage is probably not the best way to solicit help.

We often see people reporting problems working with huge trees in FTM despite having massive amounts of memory. I may be wrong but aren't 32 bit operating systems and 32 bit programs limited to only making use of 4 gb of memory no matter how many memory chips you plug into your motherboard?

Barbara:

Thanks!!! There's no doubt we all understand, and probably match, CADProfessor's level of frustration. It was very thoughtful and generous of you to take the time to provide such a thorough response. Your perspective, both professionally and personally, was extremely helpful, to me and certainly others as well.

My guess is that CADProfessor is reacting to what appears to be a general lack of concern for FTM users, on the part of the owners of FTM, and believes (probably accurately, I'm afraid) they will only pay attention if the threat of legal action forces them to do so. Since the relatively low cost of the software is unlikely to inspire such ire, I suspect the amount of time invested, then wasted, and, perhaps more importantly, the unfulfilled expectations of the program, is at the root of the upset.

I don't know if there's a decent alternative to FTM that would interact well with Ancestry.com. If so, then we have a solution. If not, I think someone could make quite a bundle providing such an alternative.

Thanks again.

Carol

YES, until FTM is upgraded to 64bit that is all it will use.
