Thanks, John, for the confirmation. I AM sadly disappointed. I am not sure I am happy with FTM 2012, but I was "forced into" upgrading because, after many years of developing the family tree, I had a problem that could only be resolved by upgrading. Soooo saaddd!

FTM 2012 shuts down

I have FTM 2012 update version 2.1.0.0.723.
The software is installed on my SSD 128 (30% free space), my data files reside on my main HD 2 TB (65% free space), I have 12 Gb ram installed.
My OS is Win7 fully updated, I have no commercial antivirus installed, I use MS Live Security, no virus as of last sweep Apr 1 2013.
My family tree is 38658 individuals strong, 11701 media files. My file syncs properly with Ancestry.ca
I ran the Data Error Report and applied all the corrections.
I compacted my tree all the way to 0.00%
Here is my problem:
I can run all the charts and reports from the publish menu except 1
When in the Chart menu after I select the Extended Family Chart, as soon as I select the Detail Tab, FTM shuts down. This also happens when I hit the Create Chart from the Collection Tab.
Here is the error report from the Event Viewer:

Any ideas?

Don't despair on genealogy itself. Try Family Search, and PAF.. personal ancestral file.. for the computer. Or paper.. my parents did genealogy on paper and with a word processor.

I have read in a post from some family tree developer that family tree maker takes inputs from customers in decided what to offer. This seems reasonable to me when ADDING features but quite unreasonable when SUBTRACTING features. If it is working we don't tend to ask for something that is already there. Case in point, birth order of children. Some people apparently asked for being able to place the children in any order they wanted. But why did that necessitate taking away the ability to globally sort children by birth order, which is the correct way anyway.

Barbara, what I don't understand is why FTM 2012 cannot do what the SIMPLER, FTM 16 could do. I am now trying how to figure out an Address Report / Contact List, since I have so many names, addresses, telephone numbers and email addresses of current family members!

Extended family page size

In outputting an Extended Family chart to Adobe Acrobat, there seems to be a limit of 200" in width even though I have Acrobat set to Oversize page and have specified a page size of 300" x 20" which should allow the poster to be output on a single page. Acrobat has a limit for Oversize pages of 15,000,000" x 15,000,000" so I suspect that FTM2012 has the 200" limit. Adobe increased to limit from 200" to 15,000,000" with version 6 of Acrobat and they are on version 11 now.

Is this correct that FTM2012 has a limit? If so, is there a work-around other than outputting to multiple pages and then merging them in Photoshop?

FTM 2012 - Address Report

Another frustration: FTM 16 had an easy way to generate an Address Report. Now that I have upgraded to FTM 2012, I am NOT finding an equally easy way to create a list of names and addresses for current family members. HELP!

And our Ancestors, a little before them, used a chisel and stones also but that doesn't mean I'm going too, or that I want too. I spent at least 8 hours a day and many day 16 to 20 hours as a new researcher. I had everything on paper as well as a web based tree and FTM, I thought all my bases were covered. But It felt like someone had broke into my home and completely destroyed my files and scattered them in the wind. This was the second time it had a "small glitch in the new sync application". If I sound bitter, I'm sorry, I really am past that and am now grieving my dead relatives all over again!! Sorry for being catty, It's just that everyone who hasn't had a problem sounds so happy and always has a solution, Wish you would have been around when I was reaching out to everyone and anyone to help me when I started. You sure didn't get help from the children at Tech support.

Yes, the 200" limit is still present in the PDF library that FTM uses. Quite a bummer. In some cases you can export to bitmap and then convert the bitmap to PDF, but I've seen mixed results with that.

I guess you could use the Custom Report - but where are addresses recorded? If they're in the Description field of the Address fact then that would work OK.

The results with a bitmap are not good and the output file is enormous. With a PDF, the quality is good and the files are very small as they are not images but the text and instructions where to place it.

I wonder if this is one the list of updates for FTM2013-14???

They need to put a couple of programmers working the usage related issues in FTM2012.

Thanks for the quick replay, Sean.

Yes, Addresses, Phone Numbers and Email Addresses are in the Facts for an individual, from the tree I created and imported from FTM 16. I am working on creating an Address Report by working with the Smart Story feature, but that is a real pain in the butt because I have to go to each person's file and then drag and drop the info then reformat it.

Fortunately, I have a recent Address Report generated by FTM 16 that I am using as a "road map".

I was hoping that FTM 2012 could import the info automatically, for anyone who had Address / Phone / Email Facts included in their file.

Is that possible? And if so, how?

I agree as to the benefits of PDF, but it's a work-around that can get the job done. Once you convert the bitmap to PDF (using 3rd-party software) the size is OK.

I'd love to see PDF creation improvements, but since this hasn't changed in FTM2008, 2010, 2011, and 2012 - I'm not holding my breath.

I hadn't actually tried this in a while, so I did some tests. I took essentially the same tree in both FTM2012 and FTM Mac 2.

Due to formatting differences with the boxes, etc. the sizes didn't come out exactly the same - but close enough. The Extended Family Tree for all individuals was 680.5" x 13" on Windows and 893.6" x 13.5" on the Mac.

When I export to one-page PDF, I get the message about "Chart will be clipped to fit PDF" on the Windows machine. The Mac exports the full PDF without problems. I did not expect that but it's a pleasant surprise.

On Windows, I'm able to export to an EMF image file without any difficulties. I don't have PDF creation software on my Windows machine, but I'm able to open the EMF and zoom it up to 100% and the full chart looks fine; I'm sure there are plenty of ways to convert that to PDF.

FTM 2012 and Windows 8

Is anybody else having a problem with their family tree and Windows 8 in the NOTES section? All these years I would copy and paste different records under the NOTES section and also include an obit. Now that I'm using a new computer with Windows 8 and the FTM 2012 sync -- when I look under the NOTES tab, everything runs together as if it's all one paragraph. It also mixes up the birth order of the children. I wish things were like they use to be! This is driving me crazy.

Creating a "test" tree will prove nothing unless it matches the characteristics of your file. FTM is noted to crash with larger files.

You might see if there is someone local that can help you with your files. As bad as FTM 2012 is, you should not loose all of your information.

2012 and Backslashes

I recently converted to FTM 2012 and am attempting to update a few surnames with backslashes. Such as \von Surname\. However, every time I enter the trailing backslash, the FTM crashes/ with the error A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. I have applied all the updates to 2012. Any suggestions?
