Unable to download Ancestry tree into FTM 2017

I am running FTM 2017 (23.2.0.1540) on a Windows 10 machine. O have tried unsuccessfully to download my tree from Ancestry into FTM over a dozen times at different times of the day, including the middle of the night

I start the download and it goes through the following steps ( see screen shots below)

1) Downloading people 26095
2) Downloading Citations 68100
3) Downloading Sources 1030
4) Downloading data from Ancestry - at this point nothing appears to be happening and the I get an error message

Connection has been reset or Download interrupted. No Tree created.

I have worked with Mackiev live chat and we have tried Clean boot, Safe Mode, turning off the Windows Firewall, WiFi vs Direct connection and all produce that same result a connection reset or down load interrupted. No Tree created. We verified my connection speed with Soeedtest.net over 35 MBPS on Spectrum Cable internet

The CSR at MacKiev was going to send the request to the Engineers. Until them, I was interested in any thoughts from the group. Let me know

That's not true, Ancestry DOES show black or grey side or top/bottom bars if the image is not square, as in the attached screenshots.

No, it's not a big deal, but since the area provided for profile pictures IS square, supplying a non-square image means you either lose some of that image to cropping or waste some of the window space - either way you're not making full use of the profile picture space. If you're going to crop an image for use on a profile anyway, there seems little point in NOT making it square when you crop it.

Of course, you can use Ancestry's built-in profile cropping facility (and not select the "use full image" option), but in the past at least that cropping wasn't copied over to FTM which would still use the full image, so creating a separate cropped image just for the profile avoids all these issues, even though it involves a little extra work.

As I say, you're free to use profile images any way you wish or even not at all, but since the facility is there I try to make the best and most consistent use of it.

It's not a big deal. It is just aesthetics/presentation.

FTM's profile portrait image is just that pick a picture and it is what it is with the whole photo showing in a square shape. (ie Little boy sitting on little chair you see the whole 4x5 image so yes there is empty space on the left and right.) You can choose to have FTM automatically crop all portrait photos but you do not have individual control of how each image is cropped (i.e. in this case (not shown) FTM cropped to the top part of said photo). When you make a Family Group Sheet or a Chart you see the whole photo so in this case it appears/prints teeny, tiny.

Ancestry online allows you to pick a photo for the portrait from the person's gallery and select an area of the photo be it the whole photo or a crop of a smaller area of the photo which does not alter the original photo added the tree. (i.e. Little boy on little chair in a 4x5 image but you make the portrait crop square around his head thus "a close-up of his face" and it fills the square.) If the photo or your crop area is not square you have white/black dead space. By being able to select the crop area you can focus/zoom in on the face/house etc. which then appears larger and more pleasing. The portrait crop does appear/print in the tree and family group page as you cropped it so it does not revert to showing the whole photo teeny, tiny.

By making a square portrait image to the size/shape and a crop of the image you desire in a photo editing program, you get a more pleasing photo that you can use in FTM and Ancestry Online Tree that fills the square portrait area of both trees. (If you check placement you can use it in circle shapes too.) And in FTM that square portrait image fills the FTM portrait square completely and it appears/prints in Family Group Sheets and Charts as you made it thus you can see the person face (or whatever you focused on) much better and it is more pleasing.

Like the use of a portrait image is up to each individual. so is taking another step/option to make a square portrait image.

Nice example of another way to do it. You're right in that if a way to do something does not work with how someone works/thinks then he/she is not going to do it. And, of course, write notes so you remember what you did!

Quick thing to check, didn't see if you had this option selected or not:

Uncheck the box "Download Ancestry Citation Media". I have found similar issues when I try to download all the Census Data, etc. with a tree with 20K people in it. IMO, I don't need to have a local copy of that type of data for everyone...i can download ones that i'm interested in. Yes you have to be online to view those, but anymore, most people are connected 24/7 anyway.

Other options are try a different computer, try a different file (a smaller one!), turn off AntiVirus (in my case, McAfee is actually providing the firewall, not Windows), delete all the "temp" files (i use CCleaner), remove/reinstall FTM, and turn off automatic backup temporarily (Google, OneDrive, DropBox, etc).

I'm sure you have done all or most of these!!! Hope this helps

Re: Splitting family tree into two trees

If you want to split then an alternative, graphical, method is as follows:

1) backup your existing tree file .ftm. (obviously!)
2) make two copies of the tree file, one for you, one for the spouse.
3) open one of the copies, and disconnect the Spouse from you and the children
4) select "Publish" "Extended Family Chart" with all people and all generations.
5) select the Spouse and right-click on the mouse. That will give you range of options for choosing what to mark. in this case choose "Select Person and Relations"
6) Invert the selection, delete (your relations) and save your Spouse's tree.

Repeat the 3) to 6) but select yourself and you will end up with your tree.

You should end up with two trees with no overlap, except possibly the children if you leave them in. However it is always possible that your relations had relations with your spouse's relations and this may show up. For example, one of my Father's brothers married one of my Mother's sisters so the above procedure would still show both of my parents and common Grandparents and the above procedure would delete every one or no-one....

The options on the right click are worth exploring if you want to add or remove Ancestors, Descendants, Generations, Non-Spousal relations, common relations etc. You can combine several selections.

Thanks for those suggestions. I do not use an AntiVirus program, have already deleted the Temp files, and have turned off autoback ups.

One of the steps that I tried was to create a small tree in FTM and see if I could upload it. I did without any problems and then do the same with a tree I had created on Ancestry and try to download it. I also had no problems do that.

I could try another computer or a different internet connection and your suggestion about uninstall and reinstall FTM.

I’m So Dissapointed and a little confused that the Charting Compainion 7 DNA edition is only for Windows. I was so excited when I saw this program and I went to purchase it only to find out it’s not compatible with my Mac. It’s 2018 and I would think just about every new computer program would be created for both Windows and Mac. :(

Websearch on FTM

On the Websearch tab I switched to Family Tree Maker. Now i can't get it back to using the Ancestry search. The old version had tabs to click on. I typed ancestry's address in the address window and it goes to Ancestry, but it won't search on the name highlighted at the top of the page. You have to type in the info. Thanks.

It depends on the language used to program the program according to my computer/IT brother. Some programming languages work on both but some only work on one platform.

I know we think of companies as being very big, but some companies are very small (like just a couple people) so in order to expand their skill-set to re-write a program in another language to work on both they'd have to hire someone or learn the other language themselves and of course work out the kinks.

I used to be Mac long ago so I know that bummed feeling. Went PC without too many regrets.

Do they still make that program to run pc programs on mac? Parallels or Bridge or something like that where you can run the pc FTM with the chart might be an option.

Best Practices - Birth weight, length, etc.

Where/How should birth details beyond date and location (e.g. birth weight, height, etc.) be documented in FTM?

In my ongoing project to make things consistent and usable in my family tree, I would appreciate feedback on this question. My current practice is to include this information in the "description" field of the Birth fact as follows:

Name of Hospital* | weight, length | any other important details**
* or Born at Home, etc.
** i.e. 6-weeks premature, umbilical cord wrapped around neck, looked like lizard, etc.

I am not sure how else to capture this kind of information. FTM/GEDCOM Height and Weight facts are not date-specific so would not be appropriate for birth details.

Thoughts? Other "best practices" on recording this kind of information? Thanks!

My recommendation is DON'T split your tree.

As stated, if you split your tree all of your descendants will have to be duplicated. It has been known that members of you and your spouse will have siblings marrying. I have two cousin in the same family who married siblings in another family.

One of the surprises in my research was that member of my parents family married 20 years before my parents wedding, made two connection between the two families. All of this would be duplicated if I had split our trees.

Request for ideas on using PROPERTY fact for property owned by spouses

$

I'd like to get a feel for how everyone is using the PROPERTY fact, especially when the property is owned by spouses.

For example, I have found deeds showing only the husband's name on the deed that acquired the property. When the same property is sold, the deed will have BOTH the husband's and wife's name. Are you all showing the PROPERTY fact for both individuals or only the husband? Clearly the deed supports the NAME fact for either the husband or both (depending on what the deed says). I'm just wondering about how others are setting up the PROPERTY fact, particularly for the wife.

I don't think there's a "correct" answer for this, but just wanting some ideas on what everyone thinks is a good way to deal with this situation.

Thanks,

Paul

Do you have a source for this information, i.e. certificate, bible, diary, baby book etc. ?

First, I mainly deal with land not property, so I created a custom fact named "Land", and I record the purchase and sale - not the ownership. At least in the states that I have recorded land and property facts, the purchase of land and property only requires the signature or mark of the husband, whereas the sale requires the signature or mark of the husband and wife. The two land facts I show in the attached .jpg show the husband and the wife named in both sales, but only the husband is named in the purchase. The purchase land fact only appears in the husband's profile, whereas the sale land fact appears in both the husband's and wife's profile. The description of the land is included in the notes for each land fact.

P.S. I failed to mention that the land fact media item is a copy of the recorded deed which is attached to the source citation. The source is a custom source which is the land deed records book.

It sounds like you hid the left panel with the list of sites to search. See attached screenshots.

Re: Websearch on FTM

FTM2017 WebSearch no longer connects directly to the Ancestry web site. Instead they use a Chromium based simulation and pass the request via another site. The "Ancestry.com" label merely activates the simulation.

If the OP's problem is what I think it is then the following might be useful; if not, just ignore.

If you click on a name in the search results page the simulation will pass the request via another site to Ancestry.com, not the users own site. In the UK my requests go to Ancestry.com, instead of Ancestry.co.uk, which messes up FTM2017. Also the search defaults always reset to the same, for example, it's always the "All Collections" choice, not "UK and Ireland" for me. I've discussed this with MacKiev. There are some workarounds on their site but the one I use is not (or wasn't) on their site.

MackKiev workarounds:
https://support.mackiev.com/024966-Search-Result-Detail-Issu...

From Mackiev support
"Thank you for getting back to me!

Still the issue with "Search result detail" is being investigated by us and we are going to fix in the future as it should be working as intended for anyone who does not want to use do workarounds.

But still your workaround is valuable and we will probably recommend it to others having this issue. Appreciate it very much!

Thank you for understanding!"

I suspect that USAians won't have these problems....

I've registered on Ancestry.com, Ancestry.com.ca as well as Ancestry.co.uk (and also the German and Australian sites), all with the same logon id and password. I've changed settings in the registry and the FTM2017 user.config file to make my home page the Ancestry.com site. Apart from the default search settings I don't have search problems.

Do you perhaps mean you switched to FamilySearch?
