That's very strange - I've just run a sync and got only a dozen or so changes, as I'd expect, and it completed successfully in just a minute or so. Interestingly, the media error I've had for the last few weeks has also corrected itself, so I presume that was a problem at the Ancestry end that they've now resolved.
I'm at a loss to explain what the problem affecting you and others is. Even if Ancestry updated a source, it's difficult to see how that could affect so many people. If you are eventually able to get as far as the Sync Change Log screen with the summary, and can then use the "View / Print details" button to see the details, that might provide a clue as to what's going on.

Another bit of info. My 2016 (or so) version of Family Tree Maker (prior to MacKiev) attributed hundreds if not thousands of pictures to me after syncing with ancestry.com. This may have been a restored FTM file that I then uploaded to ancestry. Very personal family fotos, posted by people I did not know, were attributed to me as the original poster, which understandably cranked off some of the original posters.
Hypothesis: Maybe FTM and/or ancestry.com altered the processing of media descriptors or images, and a new sync is trying to alter the attribution on the other system.
I aborted/cancelled my sync again yesterday, hoping the issue would just go away today. It did not. However, I made a couple minor changes in 4 other trees a few minutes ago, and ran sync with them, and things went fairly smoothly. I did notice hundreds of changes in a smaller tree (3900 people) that was derived from my large (210,000 people) tree. The smaller tree was direct-ancestors-only, pulled from the larger tree a month ago.
In sum, I going to try to sync the large tree again today and let it run for 12 hours or even overnight. I believe this may be a one-time media attribution update, caused by whatever reason. If the sync screen finally asks me to click OK to continue a sync that is deleting or adding 40,000 people, I will cancel the sync (if it ever gets that far). If it just wants to update that many media records I will OK and see what happens, since I have two backups (one hard drive, one removable SSD drive) created yesterday.

HOW TO ENTER ILLEGITIMATE CHILDREN
I use FTM 2011 and am wondering how to enter one of my cousins. The names are fictional.
Aunt Ruth and Uncle John had 7 children. An 8th child (now in his 70's) was born with Ruth and John’s names on his birth certificate, 4½ years after the death of John. He bears John’s name but obviously he is not John's. Ruth never remarried and I have not heard of another male presence in her life.
This child is fully aware that he is not John's son but everyone in the family has refused to discuss his illegitimacy. He was raised by Ruth as hers.
I suspect the child could be Ruth's and an unknown individual, OR the result of a rape, OR the child of one of his older unmarried (at that time) sisters.
I am sure he is a blood relation and not a stranger adoption. It is not my intention to find the truth because it isn’t mine but I need tips about how to insert him in the family tree.
I know how to detach his supposed father but should I mention in some way the possibility of his sister being his mother (I've heard this is a common occurrence in these situations). Or just sleeping dogs lie?

FTM 2017 GEDCOM
Hi. From my latest FTM2017, tried to export a GEDCOM and got the following errors:
It should create:
1 ALIA /Joseph Temp/
but instead created:
1 NAME Joseph Temp
2 TYPE aka

but instead created:

FTM2017 was exporting fine in April, so I think the problem is in the latest update. Not sure if I need to report here or somewhere else.

As far as the alias name is concerned, I don't believe it's an error, and I think FTM is correct. In gedcom 5.5, using the ALIA tag for an alternative name is incorrect and unsupported. The correct way for an alias name is to use TYPE aka, as FTM is doing. The ALIA tag is specifically to link to another record description of a person that may be the same person, and it can ONLY have a pointer to another record, not a name. It appears that many programs use the ALIA tag incorrectly this way, but I'm guessing that FTM has now been fixed to conform to the gedcom 5.5 standard. I haven't looked into your second issue, but I wonder if it might be similar, with FTM being changed to make it gedcom compliant?
I seem to recall that in earlier versions of FTM (or perhaps FTM2017 before the last update), you could select a specific gedcom version number for export, but I can't find that now (see screenshot), so I'm guessing the "Other" destination always generates a 5.5 file unless you select one of the older FTM version formats instead. You could try the other destination formats to see if that makes a difference.

Technical support got back with me. Yes, a feature not a bug. What I do is export GEDCOM files to my old FTM16. It was FTM16 complaining about the ALIA and EVEN stuff. I use FTM16 to create a custom report, output as a comma delimited csv file. I suppose I could start using the FTM 2017 custom report, but 1) it's terribly slow, 2) it doesn't allow multiple name columns, so I'll need to figure another way to separate first/last names.

I don't know quite what you want to do with the report but it is possible to get CSV files from FTM2014 (and presumably FTM2017) if you create an appropriate report, right click on the report and choose "Export to CSV" option, the file can then be imported to LibreOffice Calc (or spreadsheet of your choice).

Which GEDCOM destination type are you selecting when exporting from FTM2017? I've just checked and although the "Other" type produces the "TYPE aka" format, if you select "FTM 16" it produces "ALIA alias name" instead (even though the header still claims to be gedcom 5.5.1!), which I assume the FTM16 import should be expecting and be happy with even though it's not strictly correct. Or perhaps I've misunderstood?

You're right. I tried another GEDCOM export, type FTM 16 and got ALIA instead of TYPE aka. I must have selected "Other". Somehow I did it twice! Thanks for the help.

As for speed, I've found FTM2017 much better since the last update, and generally it's no longer unpleasant to use. Unfortunately it still doesn't seem anywhere near as fast as I remember the pre-MacKiev-rewrite versions being. I hardly do any reporting, but I can understand why you might still use the older version. As others suggest, there may also be an alternative way to get your results from FTM2017 - some things in FTM are certainly far from obvious, like the cryptic way multiple-person deletion is only available from reporting, or the tortuous and rather limited filter and colour coding systems.

Can you give us a hint as to where you find the "All Media" button to select and then where do you right click to find Missing Media? Use of quotes when identifying a button helps as well. Thanks!
