But are you able to actually open your file? Usually when I get that message it still allows me to open my file. It's a warning that the program did not close properly the last time it was used.

That is not opening your tree. That is accessing the file, in order to compact and repair.

I had the same problem a while back. Turned out on a Dell computer there was a conflict between FTM 2017 and Dell Backup, which I found out about when I chatted with an FTM help person. Had to delete Dell Backup, then FTM 2017 worked again.

"BUT if you keep your Media files, linked (not copied) to where YOU want and not where FTM would like them to be, What happens when you are on the "other" computer, where you have not media files, because they are "some where else"?"
Nothing happens unless I want to access the media files. Prior to FTM2012 when I had my FTM files on dropbox and all the media on a portable hard drive I had no difficulties with the files & media stored in separate places. The majority of the time I don't need to access saved media to work on my genealogy but when I do I know I can plug the drive into either computer and FTM will recognize it.
Having the media folder in dropbox does work very well, however it also uses up valuable space I need for other things.
Having both the FTM files and media files only on the portable hard drive is great if I want to cart the hard drive everywhere I go. I don't. I'd rather keep the hard drive at my base of operation (be that home or vacation home) and not worry about losing it. If I'm on a research trip yes I would bring it with me, but otherwise it stays at home.
Having the FTM files on dropbox and the media files elsewhere allows me the freedom to use either computer without worry of maxing my dropbox space or the hassle of dragging the hard drive with me. Yet I would still have a copy of the media available on the portable should I need to access it.
Keep in mind that just having the option to choose where media files are saved does not mean anyone would have to choose to put it elsewhere. For me, two separate places works better. I understand that won't work for others and respect their choice.

Re: Directory preference?
"The ability to choose where non-Ancestry.com images reside has been present in FTM since ~2009."
True, but the issue here is where Ancestry.com images are downloaded to. FTM allows you to choose where to save your FTM file then automatically creates a sub-folder in that directory where it then downloads Ancestry.com images.
If, like me, you want your downloaded media saved elsewhere that option is not available.

"FTM requires the Media Folder in the same folder as the FTM file - as far as I know."
And that is the crux of my problem, lol. Prior to FTM2012 and the addition of sync (which I DO like) I was able to have my FTM files on dropbox and my media files on the portable hard drive. The option to choose on FTM wasn't available but that didn't matter as I wasn't downloading anything - all the media in the tree was manually linked from wherever I had it saved so I was choosing where the media was stored.
Now if FTM2012 introduces the ability to sync to any computer this issue will be a moot point as I will no longer have to worry about the constraints of dropbox and be able to sync my FTM files anywhere.

Re: Directory preference?
silverfox,
"In other words your FTM files would be in synch, but your two Media Folders would not be in synch"
That's not possible. FTM2012 only allows you to sync on one computer so the media would be downloaded to that one computer only. So if you sync on Computer A then go to the mountain retreat you will not be able to sync using Computer B. Any new media items you find on Ancestry would remain on Ancestry until you returned to Computer A.
As for maintaining access to downloaded media files - no problem! Using Computer A I would sync my FTM2012 file. The FTM file would save to dropbox and share that file with my other computers.
The media would sync to my portable hard drive which appears as drive F on my PC. When I traveled to the mountain retreat I would take the portable with me, plug it into the laptop and ensure it too appears as drive F.
As FTM had downloaded the media to drive F on my PC, it would look for drive F on my laptop allowing me continued access to the files regardless of which computer I was using.

"I think the better answer is to simply acquire additional storage space."
With regards to the original issue, the better answer would be to allow FTM users to choose where the media files are downloaded to, then space wouldn't be an issue.

Re: Directory preference?
David,
The media files in question are not ones I've added from my personal collection. They are records from Ancestry that I've synced to my tree. I would imagine what I'm downloading is a copy of the record Ancestry has made available. If I did resize the file and then synced my tree would it create a conflict? Would it upload the changed file from my end, add it as a duplicate or break the link?
To be honest though resizing every downloaded file would take time I would prefer to spend doing more research.

Re: Directory preference?
It's not confusing. I want the ability to tell FTM2012 where to download the media files instead of it choosing for me based on where I keep my FTM file.
I want my FTM files in dropbox so I can work on my tree regardless of what computer I'm using.
I DON'T want the media files downloaded to dropbox as they take up a huge amount of space. I use dropbox for more than syncing my FTM files so need the space for other things.

Re: Directory preference?
Russ,
I'd like to save the media files so that I have copies when I don't have internet access (wireless isn't available everywhere, yet). However I'd like to save them in a non-dropbox folder but keep my FTM files in a dropbox folder. There is an option with dropbox to do a selective sync but that only prevents the files from syncing, they're still on the dropbox server and still use dropbox space.
Prior to FTM2012 I saved/linked all my media manually on a portable hard drive. Using the same directory structure on both computers I could plug in the hard drive and the media would be viewable in FTM regardless of which computer I was using. It worked fabulously as I could still have my media accessible yet not take up valuable dropbox space (and yes I also have a backup copy of this media saved elsewhere).
As for filenames, no I couldn't say I was ok with them. They're uninformative. I've got 50 "1790 United States Federal Census" files but unless I access the file from Ancestry, FTM, or open each one individually I have no idea which one belongs to which person. Plus all the media is dumped into one sub-folder. It can get overwhelming if you're seeking a specific citation or want to share all the media for just one person.

Re: Directory preference?
The tools option allows me to choose where to put the FTM file, it does not allow me to designate where to put the media folder which is automatically placed in a sub-directory of wherever the FTM files are located.
Yes I have looked at the filenames of the downloaded media. They are specific to the record but not the person they are linked to. ie. "1790 United States Federal Census-1.jpg", "1790 United States Federal Census-2.jpg" and so on.
FTM2012 files do sync using dropbox. However when using Ancestry sync that can only be done from one computer. So I can sync my tree from Ancestry on computer#1. Dropbox will then sync those files with my other computer. I can then open the FTM2012 file on computer#2 just like before. The FTM2012 file will save (but not sync with Ancestry), sync via dropbox and next time I use computer#1 will sync back with Ancestry.

Re: Directory preference?
When you sync a tree with Ancestry you have no choice where the media files are downloaded - FTM puts them in a sub-folder of the directory where your FTM file resides.
I currently use dropbox to store my FTM files allowing me to add to my family tree on any computer of my choice. The media files I've added are stored elsewhere and linked manually. However I do have a few trees that are synced with Ancestry. When they sync and download media I cannot designate where I want that media saved. As a result it has maxed out my dropbox space and I've now had to delete that media from my computer and change the FTM options preventing it from downloading.
The media is still stored on Ancestry but I would like to have a secondary copy on my computer that can be accessed when I don't have an internet connection.

Directory preference?
I'm using FTM2012, is there a way to choose where media files are stored or downloaded to? I've looked in preferences and my only choice is where to save the FTM file itself (the program then creates a directory in that directory to store the media).
I'd like to store the media elsewhere, is this possible with FTM2012?

Re: Synching more than one computer
I've been using dropbox to sync my FTM files for over a year. It works fabulously and I didn't have to wonder which computer had which FTM file and where I had left off.
FTM2012 threw a hitch in that plan. The FTM files still sync and are still usable on either computer. I can enter in new data, makes changes, etc. like I used to and it syncs the files on both my laptop and PC.
However I can only sync that information to/from Ancestry using one computer (whichever one I used to originally sync the file).
So using dropbox does work making it possible to sync your FTM files across several computers. You'll just have to designate one computer as the one where you sync to Ancestry.

How could a list of all patriarchs/matriarchs in a file with mulitple unrelated trees be created?
In doing research on one specific surname I've ended up with one FTM file with multiple unrelated trees. I do not want these trees merged as evidence has not yet been discovered to link them, BUT I do want to know how many trees I have and who heads each one.
Is there a way to create a list of the "heads" of each tree so I can identify each unrelated tree?

Re: Very worried about my FTM data being store in a Kiev, Ukraine server!
These people replying to this post are pretty naive. If the Russians have the ability to hoover up the geneology files of millions of Americans, and if the stuff is in Kiev, they probably do ... it's not about Russia 'taking over' Ukraine. There's already massive hacking into Ukraine systems from Russia. No kidding ... and if the Russians have this - they can put it all in a 'Big Data' machine with software that can crawl up and down these files and find out who's related to who. Living people. Yes. Believe it.
Of course, the CIA/NSA should be on top of this, too. So they probably have it.
It's not about hacking individuals - it's about having a huge database that they can crawl up and down with artificial intelligence software.
The people responding that it's 'no problem' are probably russians anyway (fake names that sound innocent)
