I did go to the website and found the patch and downloaded it and it is now working properly. Thank you for your help. Have a great day.

Pro Genealogy Naming Conventions?
I have a couple of questions regarding naming to accurately enter data. I would appreciate any help.
1. What is the proper naming convention for ancestors who Americanized their names? Example: I have an ancestor who's birth name is Krystyan Franciszek Fenske. He changed his name to Christian Francis Fenske. I have entered his birth name as the main name. Do I then simply add Christian Francis Fenske as an alternate name, or add it as an "Also Know As" fact?
2. I'm currently using Also Know As facts for nicknames. Example: Odelia Vetsch, aka Tillie. In Family Tree Maker 2012, I checked the box "Use AKA if available after the middle name", but this only shows up in the index as: Odelia "Tillie" Vetsch. Is there a way to have her name show like this once a tree is synced online?
3. I have a Herman Alexander Fenske. All of his American records list his name as Alex H Fenske. Do I add this as an alternate name, as well?
4. Last one... I also have an Elsabeth Christina Margaretha Neilson. All of her records list her name as Christina M., including her headstone. Do I add Christina as a nickname/aka, or Christina M. Neilson as an alternate name?
I hope all of that made sense. It's beginning to get a little confusing - even for me. :)
Thanks for your advice,
Laurie

FTM sync downloads too many people
I sync from my Online tree down to FTM 2017 about once a week. Usually a hundred or so updates come in. Today FTM thinks i made 20,000 changes to my online tree in the past week. That is not possible. I am allowing it to proceed but it is taking forever. Did they make some change to the online tree that would make FTM 2017 think that so many records have been changed? I didn't change that many in the past week.

Re: FTM sync downloads too many people
Did you look at the list of changes before OKing the sync?

Re: FTM for Mac 2017 Syncing media
I agree, such a mess with the issue discovered already in June, really makes it very impractical. can you get together btw ftm and ancestry and solve the problem, now almost three months later. Or give us a proper timeline. or let us know you dont prio this and it will not be solved and we can look for alt geanealogy support. the lack of information is daunting...

Re: FTM sync downloads too many people
I am experiencing the same problem here today - 36,000 + changes. I don't know how many people are being added or deleted, or if this modifying existing records because it hasn't reached that point in sync yet. I ran Compress File and made two back ups, rebooted my computer, and am letting it run...about 5 hours in to it. Something strange is going on.

Re: FTM sync downloads too many people
That's very strange - I've just run a sync and got only a dozen or so changes, as I'd expect, and it completed successfully in just a minute or so. Interestingly, the media error I've had for the last few weeks has also corrected itself, so I presume that was a problem at the Ancestry end that they've now resolved.
I'm at a loss to explain what the problem affecting you and others is. Even if Ancestry updated a source, it's difficult to see how that could affect so many people. If you are eventually able to get as far as the Sync Change Log screen with the summary, and can then use the "View / Print details" button to see the details, that might provide a clue as to what's going on.

Re: FTM sync downloads too many people
Another bit of info. My 2016 (or so) version of Family Tree Maker (prior to MacKiev) attributed hundreds if not thousands of pictures to me after syncing with ancestry.com. This may have been a restored FTM file that I then uploaded to ancestry. Very personal family fotos, posted by people I did not know, were attributed to me as the original poster, which understandably cranked off some of the original posters.
Hypothesis: Maybe FTM and/or ancestry.com altered the processing of media descriptors or images, and a new sync is trying to alter the attribution on the other system.
I aborted/cancelled my sync again yesterday, hoping the issue would just go away today. It did not. However, I made a couple minor changes in 4 other trees a few minutes ago, and ran sync with them, and things went fairly smoothly. I did notice hundreds of changes in a smaller tree (3900 people) that was derived from my large (210,000 people) tree. The smaller tree was direct-ancestors-only, pulled from the larger tree a month ago.
In sum, I going to try to sync the large tree again today and let it run for 12 hours or even overnight. I believe this may be a one-time media attribution update, caused by whatever reason. If the sync screen finally asks me to click OK to continue a sync that is deleting or adding 40,000 people, I will cancel the sync (if it ever gets that far). If it just wants to update that many media records I will OK and see what happens, since I have two backups (one hard drive, one removable SSD drive) created yesterday.

HOW TO ENTER ILLEGITIMATE CHILDREN
I use FTM 2011 and am wondering how to enter one of my cousins. The names are fictional.
Aunt Ruth and Uncle John had 7 children. An 8th child (now in his 70's) was born with Ruth and John’s names on his birth certificate, 4½ years after the death of John. He bears John’s name but obviously he is not John's. Ruth never remarried and I have not heard of another male presence in her life.
This child is fully aware that he is not John's son but everyone in the family has refused to discuss his illegitimacy. He was raised by Ruth as hers.
I suspect the child could be Ruth's and an unknown individual, OR the result of a rape, OR the child of one of his older unmarried (at that time) sisters.
I am sure he is a blood relation and not a stranger adoption. It is not my intention to find the truth because it isn’t mine but I need tips about how to insert him in the family tree.
I know how to detach his supposed father but should I mention in some way the possibility of his sister being his mother (I've heard this is a common occurrence in these situations). Or just sleeping dogs lie?
Thanks.

Until you know for sure, do as you suggested, let sleeping dogs lie.

Re: FTM sync downloads too many people
Update: Sync ran for 8 hours and 15 min, then looked like it was going to give me the "Accept Changes" screen. Before it got there, the sync terminated automatically with an error message box, which I completed.
It looks like my only way to clean this up is to download my entire ancestry.com file into a new file name within Family Tree Maker. That can take a day with 210,000 people. Since I do all original data entry online at ancestry.com, this seems like a better approach than trying to upload my last FTM backup file to ancestry.com.
Does anybody not agree with this? Thanks for your suggestions.

Re: HOW TO ENTER ILLEGITIMATE CHILDREN
I know my husband's birth father is not his legal father. I used the relationship tool to mark one as the biological father. You can also disconnect relationships.

Re: HOW TO ENTER ILLEGITIMATE CHILDREN
Have you looked at a copy of his birth certificate to be certain the father is named ?
I certainly wouldn't mention any suspicion you may have about being a child of a sister without having any evidence of such.

Delete multiple persons-not related
I have several families that have proven to be unrelated. Is there an easier way than to delete one by one.
↧
Re: Delete multiple persons-not related
You can delete multiple persons by using any chart in the Publish workspace in FTM. However, it may help to use the extended family chart, after ensuring you've disconnected the unwanted family from your main tree, to narrow it down to the right people.
Essentially, if the chart already has just the people you want to remove, then right-click anywhere over the chart and select "Delete From File > All Persons in Chart". If not, you can individually select all the people you want to delete from the chart using Ctrl+left-click, then similarly use "Delete from File > Selected Persons". Of course, you should take a backup first, just in case of accidents!
I posted some notes about it in https://www.ancestry.co.uk/boards/topics.software.ftmmac/474... that might help, although I don't take any credit for it because I think I got the idea from someone else!

Re: HOW TO ENTER ILLEGITIMATE CHILDREN
I would suggest you do a DNA test of the child and also potentially close living relatives to see if you can verify his mother and maybe his father. I would seek this information before updating the tree.

Re: FTM Search Categories
When I do a category search this is the problem I'm having. Notice I get the list of the categories, census, marriage, birth etc on the right side. My problem once I click on the category I want to look through, I get nothing even though the number of records are indicated as to how many there are for the deceased ancestor I'm searching for. I've erased only my deceased ancestors name as the person I'm searching for is not relevent to the issue I'm having of not being able to search through specific records.

Re: FTM Search Categories
I've just tried this (with the "Family Trees" option unticked to avoid the missing categories problem), and get much the same as you. I can see the categories and match counts, but clicking on any one either shows nothing, or gives a script error (see first photo attached), so it's definitely broken! It would be worth reporting this to Ancestry and/or MacKiev - the more reports they get, the more likely they are to fix both these problems, I suppose!
As a possible workaround, I found that after you get the blank results on selecting a particular category from the CATEGORY view (whether or not the error popup appeared, which seems random), if you then click RECORDS at the top it does seem to show just the subset of records in that category correctly, as in the second photo attached. Hope this helps.

Is the citation text function broken?
I ask this because, when I add the citation text for say a birthdate for a family member then go and choose the same source title for another family member, the citation text has the information from the previous entry; ie ; the birthdate text.
When I change it to the new citation text, the birthdate citation text changes from the previous entry to reflect this last change. This field should be blank for every new entry or have just what you entered for that fact/person.
This worked well in FTM v16. But seems to be broken in 2008.
Is this a problem with the way I use it or is it truely broken.
Does anyone else notice this problem or is it just me.
