Mainly because one wide sheet in a PDF format is easier to view on the screen then when I feel like I'm finally ready to print, I plan on using a company like the one below.

I just went to online chat after trying ALL the troubleshooting. There is an updater the online chat person gave me a link to. It did not show up anywhere else I looked. I don't know why this doesn't show up when I look for updates from within FTM. Then it was a bit of a chore to upload and install. The program says, have you backed up your trees? I said, not yet, and got sent back to square 1. No way to back up since I could not open the trees. Now it is installed and all seems to be working. Here is the link. I'm hoping this saves someone else some time.

How does FTM 14 compare to FTM 17?

Family Tree Maker is not an Ancestry product. Asking them to fix it is useless.

Something like 125" wide x 10" high. I just don't see a place to input the User Defined dimensions.

You would have to set the size in the print driver outside of FTM. For me, I use Nuance power pdf and need to select custom and set the size in printer properties in windows. That then shows up as the paper size in FTM and I can select custom size and print the pdf as 1 page 125x10 no problem.
However I think there was a limitation in the pdf driver that comes with FTM as far as the max size you could print. I don't have that driver installed.

The link you gave will be personalised to your specific order number, so is unlikely to work for anyone else. Each person needs to go to the update centre at https://www.mackiev.com/techsupport/ftm/update_center/verifi..., as explained in the page that I linked to in my reply earlier in this discussion, to verify their account details and get their own personalised link to the updater. If that doesn't work or you don't have your original account details, go to MacKiev's Live Chat and they should be able to help you out.

Generating a Report

Is there a way to filter the data for only if a certain word appears in a field and print a report based on it? For example, I am trying to generate a report that shows only obituaries that were published in a certain city/state. I have searched the help file, and tried experimenting, but can't see a way to do it.

I tried generating an rtf file of all obituaries, which works of course. However, there is no way to edit the file because every entry is in a text box.

Learn the Filter Function which can be used to select individuals for Reports and Charts and to narrow the Index. In Program Help in the box a the top of Help Index Tab Type "filter". That will bring up two entries. Clicking on "Filter People" displays a focused list of specific topics on things you can do with the Filter. Of particular note is "Filter Individuals by Criteria", "Filtering the Index" and the group of tasks which start with the words "To filter...."

You will need to determine where in your data the "certain city/state" has been entered. i.e. In the Burial Fact, Location. That will determine how you build your filter. Of note is that one can "layer" filters one upon another to narrow the selected people. General concept is to "Filter In" a group, then "Filter Out" non applicable groups.

Select Share then "Print to One Page PDF".
I believe PDF is limited to about 200 inches.

Transfer FTM 2018 to new laptop

I have recently purchased a new laptop as old one is deteriorating and want to transfer FTM 2018 licence from old to new laptop.
I can transfer the data files but how do I obtain a copy of program without needing to buy an additional copy from MacKiev website? I did not purchase a CD / USB copy of program.

First there is no FTM 2018. The latest version is FTM 2017 version 23.1. If you contact Mackiev and explain your situation, they will help you transfer the program and your license to a new computer.

Comments like this are not helpful. The searches were working with the current version of FTM for 3 months until sometime in May. FTM passes the search parameters to Ancestry, these have not changed. The issue is that the results being returned from Ancestry are incorrect. I hope that this clarifies the situation.

If you had applied the Feb Update (version 23.1 build 480/1480) to the program on your old computer, in order to read your data, you will need to also download the update and apply it to the new installation. If you need assistance, contact MacKiev Live Chat. Search support.mackiev.com for "Live Chat" and follow the links in the article.

Asking either company to fix "it" here is a waste of your energy. Neither company monitors this board.

They have known about it for ages, I have personally reported it. It shouldn't be a matter of asking, they should have a transparent list of defects with timescales for fixes. I would also have assumed that it would be good commercial practice to obtain feedback on their products by monitoring this board. I don't think that they really care about providing a reasonable service to loyal customers.

Re: Specifying a direction for sync with FTM

Sorry for the late reply and I don't know if this always works but...When I faced a similar situation I went to the individuals in FTM and changed a few things that would be easy to change back later. For example, I added "Test" as a person's middle name on one record and added "-test" to another record where the person already had a middle name. When I executed the sync, FTM prompted me that the some records were changed in FTM and Ancestry and offered me three options: FTM wins, Ancestry Wins or manually resolve (not the exact wording but you get the idea). I was nervous so I chose manually resolve. It then walked me through the changes letting me decided the disposition on each one. Good luck.
