Re: Ancestry Login via FTM

Both Ancestry and the FTM links to it have been very patchy of late - frequent errors and delays in Ancestry, and orange and red sync status in FTM, or even the occasional "not connected to the internet" - so it may well have been related to that. If in doubt, try the usual - restart FTM, then restart your PC, then try again later :-)

Like many others I am getting a bit fed up with the continuing problems, and lack of any real updates from Ancestry or MacKiev on the situation and when it will be resolved. We're now over a month on from when the May maintenance upgrades were due to be completed, and my experience is that it's far far worse than it ever was before they started. In addition to the multiple performance issues and intermittent errors such as missing hints and images, there are newly introduced faults, including the inability to add, edit or delete comments (see attached screenshots). The hint system, though never perfect, seems far worse now, with large numbers of ridiculously inappropriate or duplicated hints, and searches often offering records already attached to the same person. There are many complaints on the UK Facebook site about this but Ancestry largely ignore them (there are accusations that they even remove some) and they just post generic "adverts" for new features or record collections. How about a post saying when we're actually going to get back to a reasonably usable system?

Did you save the report in FTM as a Saved Report or to your computer as a pdf? If you saved it in FTM as a Saved Report, you can reuse that but if you want to delete it then go to Saved Reports and select the one you want to delete. You can click on the Delete button (top right of screen) or right click and select Delete. If you saved it to your computer as a pdf then you will have to re-create that report and save it again. If you use the same name for the file, it can overwrite your previous file if you use the same name for the file.

hi best option i found was go on my tree online at ancestry, select tree then manage tree scroll to bottom of page select export tree that creates a gedcom file that will load your tree onto most tree software any photos will be lost so back the photos up using lightshot or some other print screen software, can save the gedcom once its been created, my own tree created in minutes after i complained the export was nt working they fixed it on sunday,

good luck

My downloaded gedcom has no content

I'm trying to download my ancestry trees to my computer as gedcom files. When I go through the export process, it creates a gedcom file and that file gets downloaded, but it's only a few hundred K in size and has no content when I open it with a software program. It seems like it's just downloading the name. Help? I am using Chrome, if that makes a difference.

A GEDCOM is a text only file, with the bare bones of your tree.

My tree is just under 16,000 profiles (people), with many source citations and a GEDCOM I downloaded last week is 58 MB. A small tree I worked on for a friend - the GEDCOM is less than 1 MB.

You need a program to open a GEDCOM (like Family Tree Maker or Family Tree Builder or Legacy. You can upload it to other sites, such as My Heritage or Find My Past.

Thank you. I am opening it with my Legacy software. (After converting it to a Legacy file.) There is no content whatsoever. No names in the name list or anything.

Did you download through Family Tree Maker or from Ancestry? I notice that you posted on the Family Tree Maker board, which is standalone software, not the website.

I downloaded directly from Ancestry. I guess I didn't realize I was on the wrong board! I got here by Googling for similar questions. I do have Family Tree Maker on a different computer, but I prefer Legacy. Maybe I'll have to see if there is content if I open it with FTM when I have access to that computer. Thanks for your help.

I just tried downloading my tree from Ancestry as a GEDCOM, then importing it into my old copy of Legacy 7.0. It all worked fine (apart from some unrecognised fact tags) and created a new tree with all my ~3,800 names. I presume when you say you're converting it to Legacy format, you mean you're using Legacy's "File > Import from > GEDCOM file" option, or the setup wizard, to open the .GED file, then letting it save it as a new Legacy database .FDB file when prompted?

You could open the Ancestry .GED file in a text editor (e.g. Notepad or Wordpad in Windows, though it might be a bit slow) to make sure it looks OK. This is the start of mine:

0 HEAD
1 CHAR UTF-8
1 SOUR Ancestry.com Family Trees
2 VERS (2010.3)
2 NAME Ancestry.com Family Trees
2 CORP Ancestry.com
1 GEDC
2 VERS 5.5
2 FORM LINEAGE-LINKED
0 @P1@ INDI
1 EVEN R1: Direct ancestor or descendant
2 TYPE Relation type
1 NAME Ross /Baldwin/
2 SOUR @S-1614227334@
[etc ...]

If you can, try importing or uploading the .GED file into another genealogy program or website, as Burgess suggests, to see whether it's the file or Legacy that's causing the problem. [sorry, just noticed you said you'll try that with FTM!]

Advice for merging two trees?

I'm considering merging my two main trees (~4,000 and ~600, that were originally kept separate for privacy concerns at the request of family). One of my main reasons is to avoid having duplicate sources in each tree.

I've seen various past discussions about the potential problems, but I suspect things have moved on a bit since most of those. There are only two duplicate people in the trees and I'm happy about merging those manually afterwards, but I wondered if anyone had any tips or things to watch out for. In particular, does the FTM2017 file merge also handle merging of sources and repositories, or will I need to do that manually? Also, is everything else from both trees preserved, such as tasks, saved filters, location resolutions, the link to the (primary) Ancestry tree and its invited guests, etc.?

I'll obviously take full backups, and I can check what's happened before I commit myself, but once I've synced the combined tree to Ancestry I suspect it would be a bit tricky to unpick it all again if I changed my mind, so I'd appreciate any advice or opinions. Many thanks, Ross.

Re: individual ID number during GEDCOM export

Is this still true? I thought it was the case too, but tonight I exported a GEDCOM twice (after making some changes) and at least one person ID (the one I was looking at) changed. If one can change, I'm guessing all can change.

Is there any statement from Ancestry that the IDs will stay the same?

First, a GEDCOM file (.ged) is a text file and can be read with MS Wordpad, etc.

Although I have FTM 2017, I run FTM 2012. How I backup and/or merge portions of my Ancestry.com trees to my FTM 2012 trees should also work for you. Here is the procedure I use:

After exporting the tree and downloading it to my computer, I go to my Desktop > My Downloads folder, find the .ged file and rename it to something other than the tree name. Then I cut and paste the file to Desktop > My Documents > Family Tree Maker folder, which is where all the FTM tree files are located. I then open up the Family Tree Maker program, and from the Plan Workspace, select the New Tree tab, and then select Import From Existing File, then select Browse to find and select the .ged file and proceed to create a new FTM tree that is a backup of my Ancestry tree without the media.

Attached is a .jpg of the backup files.

I should mention that there has been discussion on these boards about using RootsMagic to download your Ancestry.com tree including media. I'm not sure this procedure links to your online tree, and if it does, it may prevent you from relinking your Ancestry.com tree to FTM 2017.

Yes, I use the Apply button. I think this would set the default even if I just closed this pop-up window by clicking the OK button, but I haven't tried this.

But, once a particular paper size and orientation has been set this way it does become the default setting and I have to change it if I "Export to a PDF file" a chart that needs different settings.

This applies only to the Family Tree Printer when I use it to "Export to a PDF file.". If I choose to print a paper copy of some page or small chart by one of my local paper priners these default settings are as they were before the above changes were made.

The old setup with FTM 2005 would set the Family Tree Printer "Export to PDF file" paper size and orientation in the PDF file automatically if I clicked the "Print one large page" button during the export to PDF process.

Russ, I looked at these settings but my FTM installation doesn't list the Family Tree Printer here. I am guessing this list is only for those printers that would be used to make a paper print on a local printer. The Broderbund PDF printer is listed here but when I try to do any changes on its settings I am limited to only .prn files. That is, it doesn't seem capable of doing a .pdf file export.

The printers listed on the File -> Print setup in FTM are;
Lexmark Z700 - P700 series
IBM InfoPrint Color 8
CoStar Label Writer XL Turbo
Canon BubleJet-4500
Broderbund PDF Converter 2.10d

But, when I go to Control Panel -> Printers and Faxes, the above are listed and in addition the Family Tree Maker Printer is listed.

My problem is resolved to the extent that I can now EXPORT (not print) a single page large chart from FTM into an Adobe PDF file then take this PDF file to Kinko's and get the large chart printed.

My problem is NOT resolved entirely in that I can not get the FTM to EXPORT (not print) this PDF file as one large page, unless I first go to Control Panel -> Printers and Faxes then select the Family Tree Maker printer (exporter), then click on the Printing Defaults link at the left of this page and set this printer (exporter) up for the right paper size and orientation.

It used to do this automatically if I selected "Print (export) to one large (PDF) page" but now it has to be done manually.

The Family Tree Maker printer (exporter) does not appear on the FTM File -> Print Set Up options list. Only the conventional paper printers and the Broderbund PDF Converter (printers, not exporters) show up on this list. I have tried setting the Broderbund printer listed here as the default but this didn't resolve any problems. The Broderbund printer will only make .prn files when used in its export mode. It won't make .pdf files.

Setting this Brodrbund printer as the default didn't seem to cause FTM to use a different means for eporting a file to PDF (not printing) a file.

Yes, Russ, I'm more or less okay now. That is, I can print the large charts, or rather I can export them to a PDF file then take that file to Kinko's and have them print the large chart for me.

The only thing that hasn't been resolved is that the Export to PDF function won't automatically select the right paper size and orientation, even when I click "Print one large page."

I have to to through Control Panel -> Printers and Faxes, then highlight the Family Tree Printer, then click on the Printing Defaults link at the left edge of this screen, then select the paper size and orientation and click "Apply." This works okay but I have go go through the process each time I need a different paper size or orientation. No more automatic sellection here.

I can live with this, though. It isn't like I needed to change the paper size/orientaiton settings several times a day.
