Re: Report on specific generation
" I would like to generate a report showing all the individuals in my tree from a specific generation. "
There is an alternative method that may meet your needs.
If you publish the tree as a chart showing all your ancestors ("Vertical Pedigree" chart) then you can select the desired generation, export that to a GEDCOM or another .ftm file and use that for the report.
Alternatively, if you use the "Extended Family" chart then you can select everyone at a particular generation, eg your great grandparents, their siblings, their spouses, first cousins etc. You can select various relationships and export just those people.
Of course, I may have misunderstood your requirement....

Re: FTM 2017 SYNC PROBLEMS FIX
I have a large tree (over 109,000 people; 22,000 images; 253,000 records). It synced successfully for years. After I upgraded from FTM 2014 to 2017 there were some hundreds of missing and unlinked media files. I unlinked the tree in order to start over with a fresh download of the online tree. That was a mistake.
I've tried many times for about a week to download the tree. But, the download failed after grinding through citation analysis. Even tried uploading a copy (not an FTM backup) of the tree but the upload failed two. Because the tree is so large, I did not make an FTM backup.
I gave up and installed Rootsmagic and it was able to download the tree with no problem.
I have Windows 10, i7-6700 CPU, 32GB RAM, many TB of disk space, 100 Mbps internet. Seems to be a problem with FTM.

Re: Downloading Large Tree Fails
I write a message everytime that I try to send the sync log. After I click send it gives me an error message that the log was not sent. Maybe when the download fails it also fails to create a sync log. I've also used the Feedback option to report this failed download problem several times.
I did not use the FTM backup to make a copy of the tree. I just made a copy of the file and folder using Windows. So, I can't use the FTM restore option. The tree and media folder is so large that I've never used the FTM backup/restore feature. I just copy the files because that is easier.
I have the copy of the tree as it existed in FTM before I unlinked it. It isn't a backup/restore version. It is a copy. I could try uploading that to create a new tree. But, the tree is large and it takes days to download. My internet speed is 100down/10up Mbps. Since download is 10 times faster than upload, it will probably take a month or more to upload. And, I won't know if th upload works until it is finished. Downloading is by far the preferred option. Download should work if FTM finds and fixes the bug.

Re: Discontinuing of FTM Software, not happy about this change
I've been a devoted Ancestry supporter for almost 20 years. I came over when Ancestry bought Rootsweb. I still manage some Rootsweb email distribution lists and message boards. I've also built a large, well documented family tree. And I've bought dozens of AncestryDNA tests.
I'm not a casual Ancestry user. I've spent many thousands of hours doing research on Ancestry and building my family tree. I first bought Family Tree Maker (FTM) about 20 years ago and I've upgraded it regularly.
I HATE that Ancestry has killed FTM. That terrible decision makes Ancestry much less desirable to me. FTM allows me to sync my online tree and create reports and publications. Any serious genealogist needs to be able to control their research and use it to create documents.
While serious genealogists might be a small percentage of the Ancestry user base. They probably provide most of the quality control and improvement of the public work posted by casual genealogists. Ancestry should "go the extra mile" to welcome and support the serious genealogists.
The online tree is completely inadequate for controlling serious research and publishing genealogy reports.
I have more criticisms and complaints about the changes in the online tree format. I've posted my comments for you at https://docs.google.com/document/d/1JiMqDb8ECoYcTJu9p6ujt5S4...

Re: Report on specific generation
Thank you alanmon. I tried playing around with these.
I really like the vertical pedigree chart. It's a little unwieldy but I am going to experiment with it.
With your second suggestion, is there a way to limit the chart to just the direct ancestors and not the entire generation. I can't find one if there is.

Best method if you don't know surname/forename?
Hello all,
Quick question: if one does not know a surname or forename they are entering into their tree in FTM, what is the best method of entry? For example, if you know the last name is Smith but the forename is unknown, would it be:
? Smith
Unknown Smith
etc.
Thanks.

FTM2012 laggy
Hello all,
Just wondering if anyone else has the following issue. Whenever I upload and keep my tree synced with ancestry.com, FTM 2012 is always a bit laggy - meaning my computer freezes for 1-2 seconds intermittently - whether I'm editing facts, switching between people in my tree, etc. Whenever I desync my tree or Go Offline, the lagging stops. Is this typical for everyone because of syncing going on in the background or am I alone here?
Thanks in advance :)

"I really like the vertical pedigree chart. "
You can also use some of the other charts. and on those just click on a person with Right Mouse button and that will give you various options: "Select Generation", "Select Person and Ancestors" etc.
"is there a way to limit the chart to just the direct ancestors"
I don't believe so; it's the entire generation. It does give the choice of selecting ancestors, descendants with the RIght Mouse button but it's probably better to use one of the simpler charts.

Re: Report on specific generation
Ah, sorry, I didn't try that, only "All individuals". It sounds like it might be a bug in the FTM sorting then.

Re: Ancestry uk email address
Thanks again. I have now contacted both Ancestry and MacKiev suggesting they sort this out. I suspect it is FTM that is limiting the length (I don't think Windows limits file names to 100 characters, although there used to be a limit on the full path name - maybe this is what is being hit). I have suggested they get Ancestry to supply a short form of the database name for use when they generate filenames - but I doubt if anything as sensible as this will happen!

Re: Ancestry uk email address
The limit for Windows is 255 characters.
Have a rad at https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/aa3...
Also note that there is a much short limit to the file names when burning a CD/DVD.
The local part of the email address—your username—must not exceed 64 characters.
The domain name is limited to 255 characters.
The ampersand counts as one character.
