Re: Sync crashes and keeps inserted people causing duplicates

I have had this happen a few times and this morning I am stuck in a sync and fearful to cancel it. Even with the Green "all is good go ahead and sync" feature saying things are okay. Any time I have had to cancel a sync it seems to duplicate all the latest additions to the tree since the last sync. This really is poor performance.

Jonathan,
No, you do NOT have the latest version (23.1.0.1480)
You can not get it by using the "Check for Updates".
One must contact MacKiev and they will give you a link to download from.
You were sent an email back in February or March with the link to download if you have registered your copy of 23.0.2.1343.

Improved FTM2017 performance after Windows 10 April 2018 update?

This may be just a coincidence, as I've been sorting out my tree colour coding, but after installing the Windows 10 April 2018 update a day or so ago, my FTM2017 (23.1.0.1480) seems much faster now! For example, applying or removing colour codings and navigating the tree display and name index list are dramatically better (perhaps only half a second or so response time, instead of anything up to 5 to 10 seconds before, depending on how many people were displayed). I can even comfortably drag-scroll the name index list, which was previously so slow as to be unusable.

I thought at first this was just because I'd finally removed all my (3,000+) individual colours and changed them to just six saved Filter lists with colours (using a custom fact as suggested by someone here - sorry, can't remember who, but thanks!) But I definitely get the impression that FTM2017 is faster in other areas as well, e.g. in the Places workplace and Media selectors.

If this isn't just my imagination, the only explanation I can think of is that the Win10 update also updates the .NET framework to 4.7.2, and FTM is built around .NET, which is probably one of the reasons that it's never been all that fast.

I'd be interested to know if anyone else has noticed FTM2017 being faster after updating their Windows 10. I suppose I could switch back all my colour coding or even uninstall the Win 10 update to compare, but that would be really tedious...

Incidentally, I have noticed a few bugs in the Win 10 update that others have also reported. The Windows Hello fingerprint login was messed up, logging me in but then re-prompting to log in again with my PIN. Removing the PIN and fingerprint then adding them again resolved that. Likewise, the update spuriously assigned a drive letter to the recovery partition, which then nagged me with "Drive E: nearly full warnings" until I ran diskpart as admin to remove the drive letter. Other than that, all seems Ok, and it's worth a few niggles if it's actually speeded up FTM :-)

Thanks for putting this link up, had been having the same issue but the upgrade appears to have resolved it.

I was having the same problem. Although I have NOT been in direct contact with them for the status of this issue, I can tell you that it includes ANY search functionality whatsoever. In other words, it doesn't need to be someone in your family tree. If you try to search for ANYONE, you will receive the 'zero good matches' message.
HOWEVER, I was running version 23.0.2.1343. After downloading the 23.1.0.480 version update and installing it as 'jjsparlarc' did, I was able to get a link and sync; as well as perform a search in the Web Search button area, which completely fixed my 'zero good matches' issue.
If all of you are running the 23.0.2.1343 version and having this issue, you will need to update with 23.1.0.480. I have been in the IT industry long enough to know that if you have a work around, you use it. This actually may be the permanent fix since build 480 was designed to fix glitches with syncing. If a recent Windows Update closed a doorway for search functionality on FTM, it will be up to MacKiev to work with Microsoft to code around the issue if build 480 isn't the answer.

Ross - Thanks for posting this. I haven’t applied the April update yet so I’ll see if I can find something in FTM that is slow enough to measure accurately (my tree is less than 3k people with a couple of filter-driven color lists so things are already pretty quick) and get a before and after comparison.

I chatted with Logan at MacKiev software . They are having everyone update to version 23.1 build 480 that are having this issue. Based on what they are finding, the people with this issue are still running version 23.0 build 343.
Update people, update!

I'll see if I can find an old backup that still has the individual colour codes, to check if that's slow or fast. Anyway, whatever the reason, FTM's now fast enough to be pleasant to use!

I do not have any numbers but I experienced a huge speed up with the FTM update. Prior to the original MacKiev release, I had Windows 10 (and still do). I had always worked on FTM and then just synced with Ancestry. Between the original and the update, I had given up working on FTM because it was so slow both merging and syncing and I reversed the process, i.e. I worked only on Ancestry and then synced on FTM and because it was so slow, I did not sync as often as I might have liked. Actually it was someone(s) on this board who had made the suggestion. But since the update, I'm back to working on FTM and as you say 'pleasant to use'.

Thanks for your comments. I guess we all have different experiences depending on exactly how we use FTM. I tend to use it to organise my tree rather than do much research, which I do mainly on Ancestry. Luckily syncing has never been a major issue for me (apart from the annoying and unnecessary "Green alert", or more likely orange or red of late!) and is reasonably fast, but navigation in the places and tree view, and colour coding, have painfully slow for me. The 23.1 update did improve things a little I think, but it was only just this last day or so that it's improved significantly. I have yet to decide whether that's down to the Windows 10 update, or just my rationalising of colour coding.

The check for updates function does not show this update. You must download and install it yourself.

FTM2014 supported languages

I havn't found anything about supported languages. What is supported?

Areas which I feel is intrested

A) Reports in your language ==> easier to share material with people if its not on English
B) Locations: Best practice is to have a location on the language that was used in the country when the event happened. What is supported?

See picture it would be nicer to have Sverige instead of Sweden ==> when you upload Family Trees you will get better match with other trees

Seems that this issue has been impacting the FTM/Ancestry community for some time now. Unless I am missing something, there is no indication when there will be a fix or, indeed, an acknowledgement of our concern. Both the companies should be concerned about their client base and be propactively aware and dealing with the problem. I phoned the Ancestry helpline yesterday, they seem to have no record of this bug. All this is rapidly building to a degree of poor customer service that would not be tolerated in different circumstances and/or client base.

MayfieldAlan - Did you read this thread? Almost everyone has indicated that the FTM update fixed their problems. Have you applied the update?
