This may be just a coincidence, as I've been sorting out my tree colour coding, but after installing the Windows 10 April 2018 update a day or so ago, my FTM2017 (23.1.0.1480) seems much faster now! For example, applying or removing colour codings and navigating the tree display and name index list are dramatically better (perhaps only half a second or so response time, instead of anything up to 5 to 10 seconds before, depending on how many people were displayed). I can even comfortably drag-scroll the name index list, which was previously so slow as to be unusable.
I thought at first this was just because I'd finally removed all my (3,000+) individual colours and changed them to just six saved Filter lists with colours (using a custom fact as suggested by someone here - sorry, can't remember who, but thanks!) But I definitely get the impression that FTM2017 is faster in other areas as well, e.g. in the Places workplace and Media selectors.
If this isn't just my imagination, the only explanation I can think of is that the Win10 update also updates the .NET framework to 4.7.2, and FTM is built around .NET, which is probably one of the reasons that it's never been all that fast.
I'd be interested to know if anyone else has noticed FTM2017 being faster after updating their Windows 10. I suppose I could switch back all my colour coding or even uninstall the Win 10 update to compare, but that would be really tedious...
Incidentally, I have noticed a few bugs in the Win 10 update that others have also reported. The Windows Hello fingerprint login was messed up, logging me in but then re-prompting to log in again with my PIN. Removing the PIN and fingerprint then adding them again resolved that. Likewise, the update spuriously assigned a drive letter to the recovery partition, which then nagged me with "Drive E: nearly full warnings" until I ran diskpart as admin to remove the drive letter. Other than that, all seems Ok, and it's worth a few niggles if it's actually speeded up FTM :-)
