Russ, I don't know what the "Web Merge" feature is? Never heard of it, and the help for Family Tree Maker 2012 shows nothing about it. Family Tree Maker 2012 does everything "automatically" when you sync. Problem is, the program doesn't have its act together. Maybe they don't use transactional programming and something gets messed up if the internet signal goes down (I'm doing this over wifi). Who knows. Bottom line, it's not really a difficult problem to solve programmatically. It's kinda like if a person's Facebook account had someone else's photo linked to it. That's how stupid this whole thing is.
Another example is I have a microsoft word document that I created as a media item attached to a source in Family Tree Maker 2012. Well, changes I make to that document are not uploaded to my Ancestry.com tree, so I'm trying to figure out what to "change" in order to trigger the program that "hey, I need to upload this new version and overwrite the old version on Ancestry.com".
It's just crazy. A progam user shouldn't have to troubleshoot the application.
Bottom line.
