If a person is connected by marriage - AND they have their blood relatives entered (parents, children by other spouses, siblings, etc), that family will be presented as an island - separate from the family where the spouse was shown as a spouse.
This maybe/is the way the EFC drawa the chart,BUT THE WORD ISLAND YOU ARE USING IS NOT AN ISLAND IN THE SENSE OF A GENEALOGY ISLAND, THEY ARE MORE LIKE GROUPINGS [WHATEVER THAT MEANS] OF PEOPLE
I have ran many of these EFC Charts and yes I get these groupings, BUT I ONLY HAVE ONE ISLAND IN MY DATA BASE WITH 64,000 PLUS PEOPLE IN IT
You need to find somewhere the definition of an Island--sorry I cant help
