First of all you are posting to the FTM Windows board. You may be better advised to post to the FTM Mac board at http://boards.ancestry.com/topics.software.ftmmac/mb.ashx

I assume what you are doing is a File>merge in FTM for Mac 2 using a GEDCOM from Legacy?

Firstly back up both files!!!!!

When you merge a file from one genie package to another, there are three outcomes

Some of the people will already be duplicated in the host file and these will be detected by the program (FTM Mac 2 in your case) and be merged if the program can figure out that they are true duplicates. It depends on how close the names places and dates or birth are, and more importantly, how much work you did on the Legacy file as a new FTM file BEFORE your attempted the merge. Merging is 99% preparation and 1 % action.

Secondly, there will be people that FTM is not sure about and will present you with a merge table for you to make the decision and you have to go through these one by one to make a decision as to whether they are a duplicate or a new person.

This depends on how you have set the merge threshold as part of the merge procedure. I would strongly suggest that you read and thoroughly understand the info on this link.

http://ftm.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5306/kw/merg...

If you have never done any merging (and it is merging not uploading a much different procedure), that you should practice on a couple of dummy files.

Finally the third outcome of merging is new people which of course is the reason for merging

Getting back to my comment about going through the donor file as anew FTM file before merging. This lets you get the names, places, sources, etc, as consistent with the way you arrange your file.

The more work you do on the preparation the better the outcome.

"Does anyone know what is going wrong?"

It sound to me that you are rushing it a bit without really understanding what you are doing

Also have good backups
