"Hey Kathy and welcome to Genieoggltree. I may have to look it up myself."
Rich, I assume you realize everything I said in my post was "tongue-in-cheek"
FYI
1-I don't use the Ancestry.Com trees that are on-line, way too many errors*
2-I don't have any of my data base on line
3-I don't Merge data
4-I don't cut and paste data
5-I am very careful in obtaining/using "correct" data
There have been many "shots" at trying to build trees on line that other users can use. I can think of three 1)One World Tree, 2) FHL trees and 3) the latest being Ancestry.Com
The first two failed because the data became unusable, The third one is also getting to be very inaccurate and if used should be used at the user's risk
A word of caution---Find A Grave info is beginning to be very inaccurate ---- mainly because the users that are contributing to build the Ancestry.Com trees are the same users inputting data into Find A Grave.
Some pretty good general sources are:
NEGHS
Ancestory.Com if you dont use the online data mentioned above
Wikiipedia - getting to be an excellent source - appears that the contrbutors [and the process for review that has been established] is/are developing excellent sources
There is nothing like doing it the old fashioned way. Find some Data, Make sure it is correct, Enter it manually, create sources(proof) and constantly check to ensure what you have entered is correctr
*PS Just look at the posts here in this thread where people have merged, cut and pasted, and then spent many many hours undoing their mistakes
