I think, when you use FTM and webmerge a family using a member tree, the citation is to a "public member tree" and if you connect while in ancestry, the citation is to an "ancestry member tree." I don't typically add people from member trees, so I can't remember exactly - but I think the when I was copying from one of my own tress, the difference between "public" and "ancestry" had to do with whether I was working in FTM or on ancestry when I added the people. I don't see any reason why you can't merge the sources...
