Trusting Ancestry or any vendor to protect your genealogy - it's your responsibility!

I have used Ancestry and then FTM since its inception. I will never trust decades of research to a vendor or the Cloud! It is my responsibility to safeguard my work and my genealogy. I have 24 Trees. My personal tree has 43,000 people on it. FTM is the only program that syncs with Ancestry and that syncs media. All other programs accept Gedcom files but no media. I house all my trees on Ancestry but sync them to FTM on my desktop and that to a Cloud. If all these companies go poof I want my data in my hands. I also have external drive backups that are done monthly and left at a friend’s house. These constant problems with Ancestry are disconcerting indeed. Here is something factual – Ancestry has “lost” or cannot locate some people’s Trees! This has happened to two people I am in contact with on a research blog. Those two know others who are experiencing the same issue. Another sign to me of an impending disaster. This is a true mess. It is my opinion that Ancestry has become too big and is difficult to manage. I am not as optimistic as some on this thread that all will be fine. The record collections on Ancestry are invaluable resources. The trees are overall, crap. Incorrect facts entered with 100 people just copying it to their tree. Recently all of the data storage was moved to the Amazon Cloud (yes, that Amazon) and the data center in Utah will be decommissioned. Another reason to be sure I have complete copies of my trees! I will soon also upload Gedcom files to another program, probably RootsMagic. One light commentary and this one about Family Search. Now they want into the tree act. That I am not doing. People have started trees and those that are in my line are showing up on the front screen complete with beautiful portraits – of my great grandparents, parents, other direct and collateral ancestors. I get messages such as don’t you want to learn your background, blah, blah. I already know it! Those photos from wherever you got them are mine!! I posted them to Ancestry in the first place. The originals hang in my home. Funny!
