rogtaylor,
Couple of thoughts on this topic:
1) I keep the Residence Fact mostly to record information from Census Records
2) I record Enumeration District information, Family Number, Dwelling Number and street information in the Description
3) IF I have the full Address, as well, I will put that into the Address Field
Why:
My 1940 Census search was done within a week, because I have the ED information in the Description field for the 1930 Census, so I knew where the 'family' was in 1930. So, it was easy to find in 1940. Yes, I had a couple of families who moved between 1930 and 1940, but I had most of my research done by having the ED information in the Description field.
This is from the 1930 Census:
ED 15-79 - Route 62 - Family 108
I converted the ED in 1930 to the ED in 1940
ED 15-92 - Family 73
This allows me to create a report to see who was in the Household if I wish.
But in the 1930, there wasn't a street address for this household, but there was in 1940
Route 100, [townahip}, [county], [state]
I put that address in the Address Fact. I keep my Addresses Private, as it is important information for me, and I don't share that.
The Residence Fact, I use the Place Name Authority way of recording the Place, for use of the Map Feature. The Description field so that I can keep household's together for reports, and for future and past Census Records. The ED waa very important to me.
I did a blog series on the 1940 Census that might help you.

Yes, it was for the 1940 Census, but it has worked for me for each Census year.
Hope that helps,
Russ
