Re: FTM2017 Source citations and media not added during merge

Hi,
It's not you, there's a bug in FTM 2017.
A number of people report experiencing the same problem, usually it involves merging data to 'shared' facts eg a marriage.

I've not paid sufficient attention to how/when the problem occurs but thinking back I have a feeling that merging data into an existing shared fact is a problem whereas merging data that will result in the creation of a new shared fact works ok.

I'm not aware of any work around for this issue but noting when it does occur may help you avoid it in future.

I have noticed a problem downloading media when merging for some time now - before 2017 and before 2014.1. I noticed that at certain times the media item would not appear on the last page of the merge. It seemed to correspond with times of day when the net would be busy. The workaround is to back out, select something else, then go back to the record you really want and try again. I now usually check the last page first to be sure the media will be downloaded. I think the problem is in the Amazon end rather than the MacKiev end. I suspect the servers get busy and it times out before the media item is found, but it continues with the merge.

Chris.

see attachment, Just wanted to show you what I did to track things and it makes the custom report work. Since it's a fact I can add sources and media and make it private to hide. They show up on ancestry so that's a bonus when working there. Not perfect but works in my case.

At the moment it appears to be happening every time I use the merge function. No source citation shows up, no media shows up. The fact itself does. So my work around is to download the media, and copy the source citation from the last page. Cumbersome when I've become used to not having to do that. But still easier than entering it all in and writing up the citations like I did 20 years ago I suppose.

Hopefully they fix it. Just seems odd that there's a lack of consistency in that some people don't have the issue, and others do. The mysteries of computers.

I found that too, Chris. But I was using FTM2012, so I assumed it was just an age thing. I got used to going back and making sure the media downloaded. I tend to do that anyway since Ancestry wouldn't download more than one page of the media - which for some things meant I was missing out on information. Like Attestation papers for Canadian soldiers - the 2nd page often has interesting info.

But in this case, it's not even saving the source citation so that all I need to do is go back and add the media. It just adds the fact, nothing else.

Hopefully someone knows how to resolve it. Sometime...
Shannon

Rob, thanks for example. Along with Chris's idea on reporting, appears like a solid tracking system for your research pursuits.

Our person fact pane on right is coveted "real estate" for us, so can't spare the "space".

As an option for tasks mentioned in earlier post....

Attached is example of our earlier use (pre Evernote) of "custom" tasks fields (housekeeping and "to do"s) which also could be used for check list of "top docs" sought/received. After your thread looked at it closer, and not only can a user sort on category column, including user custom "added", but FTM 2017 still has the filtering tool which does same to narrow the list on screen.

Our hobby starts and stops in years...as does feature use....so need pointers, and any "task" help we can get...ha! Thanks for your input, ideas and catalyst to dig into this stuff further.

Well in web search the browser window opens but then keeps saying I'm not connected to the Internet. This happens with any of the sites I added on the left to use for research.

The merge no longer downloads all the family members from a match, only downloads the person I am searching.
The sync seems to add people to FTM on my computer and I don't want that as I like to verify sources before I integrate them into my line.

That's correct. Only 2017 can connect.

I already read your post on the Legacy list, so I'll add the same comment here. The blog author is very dismissive toward Legacy and MyHeritage. Hardly objective. My question would be 'why' the negativity?

I can't seem to get the leaves under any circumstances -- neither with or without FamilySearch, nor with or without individual record changes. What a pain!

Just to be clear, the problem I have is that the hint leaves DO show correctly in the right-hand person detail pane alongside their name (though usually after a short delay, and obviously only if they actually do have hints!), but they hardly ever appear on the corresponding icon for that person in the middle Family Tree View window. But as soon as I update the person by making a "dummy edit" or applying or removing a colour code to them, their hint leaf pops up on their icon in the Family Tree view. If your problem is that hints aren't even showing in the right-hand details pane, then that's something else. Are you definitely linked to Ancestry, and if you click the top-right Ancestry Link icon, does the popup menu have "Show hints from Ancestry" ticked?

dmossfritch ,
Since I have used both Legacy and My Heritage, I will agree with what has been stated in the noted blog.

If a company has the "best product" as they (My Heritage) has been stating for several years, why would one to buy out a good product such as Legacy?

Just curious. Would a single custom fact, work? It would have a description field where you could enter whatever codes (BC DC Ob Ma Pr) apply for a given individual. You could filter for if the fact is blank or not, and does it contain or not contain a specific code or combination of codes.

"If I had to point the figure at any particular area it would be the way FTM handles media items."

FYI I have no media within or linked to FTM 2017 and I have about the biggest/fastest Dell Windows 10 computer available and I am constantly plagued with the not responding message. It seems to occur mainly when I enter a new person.

A strange happening today, I created a fairly elaborate book - lots of people, lots of facts, lots of chapters and lots of generations and never once received the not responding message. When I finished the book I went back to entering people in the data base and the not responding message began again

My guess on this is the McKiev made some coding changes here and there in FTM 2017 and it is those changes that is slowing down the program

David,
My comments had nothing to do with the buyout. I was speaking about the negative word choices and semantics used in the blog post. If you have read my profile would will note my background. What was not included in that profile was one of my three specialties was, and continues to be, PsyOps (the use of propaganda).

Yes, that would work. Other than the data entry effort the fact will sync if there is any value present. I'm not seeing where in the custom report I can filter based on partial text. Maybe some other reports allow this, but i'm still new at using FMT.

I added another called Cemetery Name, so I can quickly sort while out visiting sites.

"I experienced the 'Not responding' issue frequently with 2014.1 (2014 had been fine) and hoped that 2017 would fix it. Unfortunately it hasn't."

One of the things I've done when strange things happen is to run Procmon (a sysinternals program) before starting a program and observe what happens. Using it I saw why FTM2012 and 2014 (first release) were slow in starting - they actually generated about 10 C# programs, compiled and linked to them at the same time as reading every entry in the places.db.

Check it out, you might see what FTM201x is waiting for...

Ross, I think you have nailed it succinctly. There is no doubt that at some point in late May or mid to late May I was using 2014 .1 and it was working virtually flawlessly. I certainly had no delay, and absolutely no not responding issues. However when I begin testing or shortly thereafter is when my issues began. It certainly had nothing to dowith synching because we weren't syncing at the time and it had nothing to do with being online either. It certainly had nothing to do with my media files because I wasn't touching my media files I was simply adding family members. Quite painfully I might add. As my first note on this post indicated, tech support has acknowledged an issue, but I was amazed that they indicated that it was included in a future list of things to be addressed. This is certainly going to lose them a host of customers and very quickly if they don't do something about it quickly, now that it's well-known

"I added another called Cemetery Name, so I can quickly sort while out visiting sites."

Great idea and like most features w FTM, you can pick and choose what works for your needs.

If newer to FTM...here's another opinion on custom fact fields related to "vitals" ; B,D,M and now with popularity of Findagrave type websites, Burials:

We learned the hard way that at some point, what gets entered from a "gather" and "enter" phase in genealogy might impact a later "share" phase.

Example: If you are interested in printing some quick standard reports (descendant or a family group sheet) you might play with your new custom field and see where, or if, it shows up if you want to "share" that fact or cemetery name with others.

We ran into this years ago with cemetery name. We now put the cemetery name into the standard burial "description" field so it can easily get seeded into default reports within FTM.

hope that makes sense. its been awhile, but sticks out as a "headache area" for us years ago. Maybe the reports have changed some. Others more active in using custom fields could speak to their experiences.
