Just a comment on the discussion. I think the format is the same for 2009 through 2012, However 2012 also creates a file with the FTMB extension.
With the new Windows 8 coming out, your long range use of FTM may be better if instead of upgrading to 2010, go all the way to 2012/2013. I believe 2012 will run on the 64 bit operating system.
