The PDF generators used in FTM 2006 and FTM 2011 are different
The PDF generator in FTM 2006 is unlikely to work in Windows 7 and Vista if you use 64 bit Windows, and as you neglect to advise this basic point or even what Windows version that you are using, I can only guess about what Windows version you have. Please note that it is very helpful when posting to a list like this that you provide your basic computer and FTM file info.
If you use a 32-bit version of Vista or Windows 7 then the KB link below has a link to a patch that may assist.

Perhaps you could red the links and then relate it to what version of Windows you are using and go from there. If you are using a 32-bit version of Vista or Windows 7 there is a patch that you can download which may solve your FTM 2006 issue.
In the case of your FTM 2011 and PDF again the top link has some assistance on diagnosing crashes etc.
One very straightforward workaround for FTM 2006 in 64 bit Vista or Windows 7 is to install a PDF creator like Adobe, Nuance, PDF995, Nitro, etc and the Print to PDF rather than export to PDF using the PDF driver as the PDF printer.
