In all versions of Windows until XP, and I assume through to the current version, you could change a parameter to show the extension.
In XP it is accessed from the Start button. Settings, Control Panel, Folder Options, View. About half way down the list you can check "Show Hidden Files and Folders".
All of your folders will show the complete file name withe the three character extension.
There are ways the programs could get around this, but you may check to see how it is set.
