I believe one of the above post was slightly misleading, though the author did not intend to mislead.
I believe you started your question by stating you have FTM 2012. It will run on Windows 7, and I assume will run on Windows 8. As I recall some of the early versions of FTM were provided a fix to run on more recent Windows versions.
I have FTM 2012, and am running it on Windows XP SP3, 1mb ram, and an Intel dual core 1.3 mh chip. (the laptop is about 6 years old.) The disk is about half utilized.
I have about 1500 people in my database. While I have no problem with the speed of navigating through the program, I do have problems with the speed at which the program opens. (1 minute + depending on the size of the database) For me this provides a lot of frustration, when working on a specific document or database with information, I do not always have FTM open. The frustration comes about in doing these task, and I need a piece of information from FTM. Usually by the time FTM gets around to opening, I have bypassed the need for the information and have to backtrack to the point I needed it, if I remember why I needed it.
Though improved it takes several minutes to create books for a large number of people. (over 6 minutes for one book of a large family) Individual reports and chart are a little faster.
One of the big frustration with the reports and charts is the fact the FTM, regenerates the chart with each parameter change, rather than allowing you to make several parameter changes, and then allow you to regenerate the item.
Lastly some searches take time, but in my experience, the lags are caused by the server not the programs. You can see for yourself by comparing an Ancestry search and a search from FTM on the Ancestry website. There is not much difference in getting the results.
