If you are going to "publish" then you should strive for accuracy, both in fact and historically so that the reader understands the context at the time. Land does not change, but it's "political" allocation does. It seems to me that it is a nonsense to describe for example someone as living in West Virginia in 1850 when that state did not exist then. The description field is the obvious place to note a subsequent change and possible better than a note. Denver in Arapahoe county in 1900, but Denver county in 1910, does no bother me.
