Have you tried restarting your laptop?
Remember that a lot of laptops do not shut down but go to sleep or standby.
It needs to completely powered down and then fired back up.
If one has a hung copy running, then it will never start until the hung copy is cleared. The only real way to makes sure that it has been cleared, is to do this power down, and restart. Then after a restart, go to "Task Manager" (Ctrl=Alt-Delete), then look to see what applications, process and services are running. Make sure that Family Tree Maker is NOT listed.
