I realize you asked @silverfox and not me but I hope my 2 cents has some value.
The one tag that is in the GEDCOM spec but not used at all by FTM is the NICK tag. However one frequently used notation in genealogy circle is the asterisk following the "common" or "prefered" name.
Johan Fredik* Hamsen always goes by his middle name Fredrik which is also called his common name.
A nick name is very often noted with quotes. Marion Mitchell "Duke" Morrison was always know as Duke his nickname.
In these cases I would not add new NAME tags just use the notations I've outlined.
Only when Mr. Morrison eventually had a stage name would I add a secondard NAME tag. In GEDCOM circles we would add a TYPE of "Stage Name" but that is not available in FTM.
