I think it depends on how you use FTM 2012. If you are syncing a large tree with ancestry, you may have problem, as a lot can go wrong between FTM, your ISP, and Ancestry servers. While I don't have an online tree, from what I have read this use is full of problems.
HOWEVER if you are using it to maintain you genealogical data, It is a good program. If there is a problem it retrieves the back up files and you go on as if nothing happen. It is my understanding that there are two backups, one that you have little control of and is automatically created by FTM, and the other the standard back up files as in older versions.
The downside of FTM 2012 is the speed in loading. It takes about 90 seconds to load. What this means to me is I will be working on a document, and click to open FTM. In the 90 seconds opening time I will continue to work on the documents. I some time forget that I have clicked to open the program and try to open it again. The program usually hangs, and none of the windows opens and I have to shut every thing down from the Task manager. This means that I will get an illegal operation the next time I open the program, and have to compact the database.
Once the program is open, the navigation between the various functions are good, and once you forget FTM Rev 16 fairly intuitive.
Internal functions like books, charts, and reports are slow but the speed is dependent on the size of the item being created.
