You may look at a different image processing program. I use Irfanview to add the reference text to newspaper articles. I leave space above the article of interest for the source and notes.
In Irvanview you can change the fonts and size of the characters to get the best presentation.
I have found that you must match the pixels required by the fonts you are using to the pixels in the newspaper article image. This can take a little experimentation. to get the match. With Irfanview you can preview the text in the image before adding it permanently. You can also use Ctrl z to undo the added text and try again.
You can then save the image and added it either to FTM or Ancestry. The source will always be part of the article once saved.
