Hi Stephenkigham,
Thanks for the corroborating experiences with FTM and ATM sync failures. I have saved literally hundreds of webshots from FTM and ACOM subscribers who have been having similar failures with syncing their trees, some are older problems including multiple kinds of data corruption (most troubling to me and seemingly to the originator of this thread) while most appear to have developed to a serious degree in the last few months.
I sympathize with you in having to try to review and repair FTM/ACOM tree-introduced errors in your large family tree. It is bad enough when FTM/ACOM's software product develops problems, but then it is even worse when the companies try to deny their role and evade providing paying customers with forthright solutions. I'd much rather have them be honest with us and admit their software has been having serious problems with syncing their respective trees, and give us sound advice on how to best safeguard our valuable date in the meantime while their software programmers try to fix the programs' errors. However, I have not yet read or received any such advice from FTM or ACOM support staff, but there are several Forum members posts that advise us on how to minimize damage to our family tree data and structures.
Specifically about your last comment, where you could not connect to http://www.ge.tt due to security restrictions, I wondered if you had tried some temporary possible solutions that often work for me with sites that browser security settings prevent access; e.g., I usually try these things in order, and to the extent I need to connect with a site (you can and should always change the settings back):
1. in IE menu tabs for "tools", under "options", in the "security" tab, click on "trusted sites" and designate the URL as a "trusted site" (similar options exist for Chrome and Firefox); if that does not work:
2. in the same options menu, under "privacy", copy the URL into "sites" & "settings" areas to allow cookies and popups; if that does not work:
3. I try opening IE in its "no add-ons" mode, which you can open in Win 7 & earlier versions from the "start" button => "programs" menu => "accessories" or "system" folder, or next best is to manually shut off all addons in the browser - again under the options menu tab; if that does not work:
4. go to the security options tab as in #1 above, and after clicking on "trusted sites", click on "custom level" and a)check for settings that might prohibit your connection to the URL, such as changing some "disabled" settings to "prompt" (e.g., iframes, mixed content, etc.) or b) reset the custom settings to "low" (temporarily) from their default "medium" settings; if that does not work:
5. you can temporarily disable your firewall and antivirus, such as advanced Norton security products allow for 15 minutes each by default (or longer times if you manually choose them), or if you use Windows security, make sure to disable the Windows Firewwall and Defender; if this does not work:
6. try another PC and internet access point if you can, since sometimes routers and other PC settings or conflicts may prevent access to a website; if this does not work: call Microsoft or the website tech support for assistance.
- if you take the above steps, make sure you keep track of your changes and try to quickly restore them after you are able (hopefully) to access the problem website.
Good luck with your trees!
