Yea, there is no need to do the merge at all. Just writting the steps out for the board here, I came to that realization..Sometimes the simplest solution is staring right at you. No merge needed.
1.setup the custom fact "Public Trees"
2.Add the new fact to any individual who is contained in the Tree you are interested in researchign further.
3.Create a "Quasi" source citation(A lead) for "Jones Family Tree"
4.Copy URL to the url field on citation
5.Link the source citation for the Jones family tree to all individuals contained in the tree, that you are interested in researching further.
As Silverfox mentioned With the new url field you won't need to do the following, but there are a number of ways to create and link a media item for completeness of documention.
Optional create a desktop shortcut for the Url to the FTM media folder or as Silverfox commented, he uses a text file containing the url. You could even go all out and pull up the jones family tree and print the section of the tree you are interested by printing the image of the tree to a PDF file and link to that as your media file. So now you would have the actual image of the tree.
OF COURSE WE ARE ALL IN AGREEMENT, this is to record these trees as a possible leads.
I'm going to take some screen shots and see if I can create a little dog & poney show and get some feedbsck. Although I know I'll take some shots for setting up a quasi source and messing with public trees, but on the off chance that there are one or two trees folks may want to keep handy, this might work.
Thanks guys and gals for all the great feedback, Thanks SFox for sharing your custom fact concept, you knew exactly where I was coming from and what I was trying to accomplish.
Cheers,
Rich
