Boy, the mere mention of ascii characters takes me back. I worked for a bank for a number of years back in the 80's and I can rember the day when we got our first dual 5-1/4" floppy disk PC and then our first 10 megabyte ibm, with a switch on the back of the pc to switch from 8mhz to "Turbo" mode 16mhz. Anyway, you were limited to either a green or amber monochrome monitor and we used to draw pictures by entering in the ascii codes to mix and match those various symbols. As, I recall in addition to the ascii code representing a symbol or leteer or number, it also was the equivelant of the esc key or tab key and even the enter key.
God I'm getting old.
...Thanks for reminding me...lol
