If all you ever use images for is genealogy then your process is probably ok.
80% of my images are not census data, probably 10%. I have maps, photos of buildings, people, ships, other objects (cups, tools, clothes, etc), poems, artwork, a couple of music scores, etc. These are all related to my family history. I of course also have 10s of thousands of photos that are not family related, but still get and need cataloging and backup. I just wish I could afford to purchase the museum cataloging software PastPerfect I used at the museum. Must look into some open source software.
