************As far as record images being kept when using FTM, my understanding is that the images available from ancestry.com are heavily compressed from the originals. I want the originals - the highest quality I can reasonably access. ................ Along with the image quality, that makes me look elsewhere to see if better alternatives exist.*************

I have been an Ancestry subscriber for over 10 years and during that time have downloaded several hundred census images and looked at several thousand more. Every one I have seen are the full page copies.

It appears you have never seen an image of a census on Ancestry, as you state it is your UNDERSTANDING the images are not good. I think it would be best to base you criticism on actual observations of the images rather than on what you have heard other people say.

Of in the census images I have seen, the resolution of the images and the compression of those images is not the problem. When you are copying thousands of documents that may be over 200 years old and written on paper with all types of pencils, inks ect. there are going to be some that may not copy well because they did not age well.

Regardless of what you see on shows like CSI, bringing out the original writing is not simple and can not be applied to each one of the millions of pages copied.
