You're right. FamilySearch abandoned the GEDCOM standard and also stopped development of their own software. Had that not happened, we might be in a different position today. Who knows what will come out of GEDCOM X or other initiatives underway? Personally, I'm pessimistic about anything happening soon. Nevertheless, I could not do this hobby without the help of software to organize all of my information, media, etc., and because I use two programs (each with different strengths), I'll be constantly reminded how nice standards compliance would be--and an improved standard at that! GEDCOM is fatally flawed in some regards, ambiguous in others, and often falls short of what's required. I look forward to something better.
