Re: In FTM 2012, how do I handle a child of my g-grandpa that was adopted by his sister?

Can we assume you have these the father, brother & spouse and sister & spouse already in your database? And, you've already entered the adoptee with his natural (blood) parents?

If so,

Select the adoptee
Main Menu in People Workspace > Person > Attach Mother > find the sister in the pick list provided, find the adoptive parents from the list provided, click ok.

Now, you still have the son selected, go to the Person tab of the People Workspace (if you aren't already there). You will see a button bar at the top of the Facts area that says Facts, Timeline, Relationships. Click on relationships.

See the natural and adoptive parents are listed and both probably as natural parents. Look at the right side and you will see a down arrow where you can change the Biological choice to Adopted choice for the sister and her husband.

Be sure the appropriate couple is the preferred couple for ancestry reports. I presume that when you run ancestry reports for the adoptee that you will want to see biological ancestors. If so, be sure that couple is the preferred couple.

Now, you have finished, but there is a problem. All of the descendants of this adoptee will appear twice in descendant reports or charts of his grandfather or higher ancestor. Does that bother you?

If that bothers you (I think that would bother me), I would not record the adoption, but make a note he was raised and adopted by his aunt. I have a Fact Note where I use the description field for those types situations.

That way, he and his descendants will show once, and only once, in descendant reports and charts. And his proper blood ancestors will show in ancestor reports.

So... two choices.

You could also follow choice No 2, but add a "dummy" record for him as a child under the sister - but leave a note that all research on him and spouses and descendants are recorded under his entry under her brother.
